Topic: my hcg fell and then rose again Posted: 18 May 2009 at 9:10pm |
So these have been my hcgs:
Fri 8 May: 20
Mon 11 May: 55
Thurs 14 May: 44
Mon 18 May: 126
So, I guess this could be vanishing twin syndrome but I am at least 5 weeks pg so these are very low levels.
I've heard this can happen with molar pregnancies but usually they have really high hcg levels. I think I've also heard this can also happen with ectopic pregnancies.
Does anyone have any ideas about what's going on?

I would wait a couple more weeks and request a scan...i had HCG level issues and got a scan at 7 1/2 weeks due to this ... my HCG levels also dropped at 10 - 11 weeks dramaticlly but things have been good so far and I have a healthy 16 week old inside me :)
Don't loose hope!!!

Hey Vanillabean, I really hope it is a viable pregnancy for you, as I hope mine is. I guess I would get a scan in a week or so if I were you, fingers crossed we will be in the Jan 2010 thread together

Aaaww Vanillbean I didn't even know you were pg hun...congratulations! Hope this is a sticky wee bean for you cos boy oh boy you sooooooooooo deserve it!
I actually just wrote out a whole long answer to your question above but stupid computor wiped it grrr but the gist was:
I thought HCG levels increasing (and maybe not even doubling necessarily) was the most important thing to look for as they do seem to vary hugely from woman to woman and pg to pg....what does your Dr say?
A scan with dildo cam should def show a sac at the moment if you are 100% sure on your dates...that might provide some reassurance too. It could well be vanishing twin syndrome and with regards to the molar/ectopic pg's...I too thought they tended to have extremely high levels of HCG?
I don't have an answer but in your shoes I would be getting me a scan asap so you can at least get some reassurance that things are where they are meant to be at this stage.
Good luck, and keep us posted (((hugs))

Thanks for the replies.
I'm not sure of my dates because I think I had delayed ovulation but even if I assume that conception happened 7 days after we BDed that would make me 5wk2d pg. With such low levels its unlikely anything would show up in a scan but I think I might ask for one because of the possibility of an ectopic pg.
And Emmecat, I can see you are about ready to pop, hope it all goes really well.

My ectopic was picked up at 6 weeks preggers with insane pain and had a scan and they were able to see "something" small in the wrong place and nothing in the uterus and my levels must have been pretty low because all my preggers tests were really quite faint. When I talked to the docs about it they said its possible for an ectopic to drop and then rise again so I had bloods done all the time to make sure it didn't do that. Not to freak you out or anything but thought Id share, they might be able to see something now or in a few days
*fingers crossed * its not that

vanillabean, I had my first scan at what turned out to be between 4.5 - 5 weeks. by that stage there is the little black sack, and all you want to know is if a) its still there and b) if it is in the right place ie not ectopic. Go and have one tomorrow wherever can fit you in, as it is the only way to put your mind at ease. You just wont see a heartbeat but still black sack is better than nothing!

They told me they won't give me a scan because my hcg levels are so low its not likely they would see anything at all in the scan yet. I thought they might say that because I read up about it first. Apparently your hcg needs to be at least 1000 and mine was only 126 on Monday. Still if it keeps rising it might be up that high sometime next week.

Maybe wait until you reckon you are closer to 7 weeks - at least then they will be able to see whats going on in there, earlier and you'll just have to go back so they can check for a heartbeat.
HUGS - its an awful wait for you and I'm keeping everything crossed that you've got a sticky wee bean.

Mine rose slowly like that when I had my mc, I didn't have a drop though (well not that I know of, would be hard to tell unless you had bloods everyday). I had a scan at 6 weeks when my levels were only 324 and they were able to see a tiny empty sac measuring only 4 weeks (although was more a guess as it was actually too small for her to measure). The plan was to go back a week later for another scan but I mc naturally 2 days later. I was being monitored for ectopic because of the way the level was rising slowly and even when they saw something in the uterus I was still being monitored as apparently you can get a pseudo sac in the uterus and still have an ectopic going on.
Sorry, not exactly a happy story for you. I did have a few ladies on here reply when I was going through my mc to say that they had had similar and all had been well so fingers crossed all is ok with you and that wee bean is just giving you a nasty scare.

fingers crossed for you!
Rising again can be those molar and twin etc but for me they monitored me at hospital for ectopic and if the levels rose she said it was likely...they also gave me a scan asap to rule that out(even though i had low levels ... )
but i hope it's the twin option!!:)

My latest hcg shows a rise from 126 to 132 over three days, so I have now let go of any inkling of hope that this is going to be viable. It will now be a matter of whether I miscarry naturally or whether I will need some kind of intervention to end the pregnancy.
