    Posted: 10 October 2009 at 4:20pm
Looks like my second child is like my first...will nap one sleep cycle when out and that is it. Doesn't matter if it is in the car, capsule, pram etc. Do other babies do this?

I know it is silly but I almost feel chained to home as if we go out I end up with an OT baby.

Any tips for how to get her to sleep longer when out?

Elias will sleep for ages in the Ergo .. he has only ever done a 45 min cycle in the pram.

Yesterday we were out basically all day and he did two sleeps while we were out both in the Ergo. (I havent found anywhere else he will sleep for so long).

Have you tried a sling of some type?

I've got a nature sway sling and a dulce & zoet but she isn't keen on either and is very restless in them. I also have a front pack but she tends to slip out the side of that so it isn't so comfe for long periods.

I'd love a wrap of some sort but have no $$ to buy anything new.

Sell all of those and try something like a mei tai or a wrap - I think you may perhaps find them more versatile, I know my tiny girl is not so fond of pouch slings but LOVES her Kozy and will sleep for ages in it... in fact that is the only place our day sleeps are happening at the moment, and that's cool - I still have both hands free etc.

Edited to add: To be perfectly blunt she may be restless in the frontpack (if it is a Baby Bjorn / Elite cruiser or similar) because they are ergonomically unsuitable for the skeletal structure and spines of wee babes.

Fiona, you might want to try out slingbabies, you can go along and try out virtually every wrap, sling, pouch, pack under the sun to see what suits you and your baby.

Issy settled fine in a sling, but Elias didnt .. so I went along and I tried a few things until I found what worked for him (The Ergo), it saved me so much money!

You can also join up and borrow slings for a fortnight so that you can take it home and try it out in "real time".

Anyway, they have a website, so take a look if you are interested. Im usually at the meetings so if you want a friendly face just let me know.

The slings twist her neck in a funny way. She is tight up one side of her neck from her position in utero (getting much better thanks to our amazing osteo) and I think the sling hurts her a bit. She likes the front pack but does kinda slip out the side which is a pain for me and probably not good for her spine. She is a really cuddly bubby so I know she'd love a wrap. When we are out I tend to hold her and she sleeps well like that but it means I have no hands free which isn't an option if it's just me with the 2 girls. I adore having her close so would much prefer having her "on" me while out anyway.

You know what HippyMama just after I posted about the $$ I thought of that option of selling mine. ROFL my brain is still so very slow ATM!

Moby's are easy to make - if you tried one and like it I could easily stitch one up for you if you got the material.

Fliss - do you have a pattern? I was going to buy one but i sew a lot so i guess could make one instead. What weight and stretch of fabric do you use? I think it will be easier to carry baby in that and put Alex in pram when out and about.

Are wraps like the Moby ok in summer or too hot? I'm quite small (size 6 to 8) so 5m of fabric will have to go around a lot of times!

Nope, no pattern (was going to pick weegee's brains cos she's made several) - here's a couple of links to sites about making them:

Babycentre
Wear your baby
CafeMom

Some of the girls who use a moby might be able to comment on the summer thing - probably make sure it's a light colour fabric and not too heavy a knit. Not sure Fiona, but I wonder if you'd use less fabric since you're so little? Emma, Bizzy or weegee might be able to help out here!

Ange, just sew one! Saves $. My plan for when we have #2 is that I'll use a moby at first to keep my hands free.

Im lucky DS quite likes his pram. If i know he needs to sleep i just put a blanket over him so that he cant see out at all. Rock him for a bit and hes asleep. I just make sure i keep the pram moving at all times even if its just by rocking....

Do you think sleeping out and about is something they either do or don't do or do you think they can learn to do it?

I think the more you do it the better it gets, and they learn that they can still sleep if they are not in their bed. Do you use a pram or take the capsule out when you are out? Maybe if you have the pram at home and let her have the odd sleep in there when you are at home so when you go out its not like she is in a strange place... not sure if that will work but just an idea.....

Ha ha, I wouldn't know about needing less material lol - I need ALL of mine - but you're welcome to try it Fiona and see how much left over there is to give you a rough idea of how much shorter it would need to be.

I am a size 6 and found the moby still fit really well. The way you wrap mens theres not alot left over to go around. Maybe a couple of feet off each end could still work but then I like that it is longer as I can get DH to wear it too

It is pretty much just a giant rectangle so surely not hard to make. And I agree with going with a lighter fabric for summer (we had black !)

Good Luck! I hope you find something that works.

Cor Daizy, I would have thought you could wrap the moby around you about 10 times!
