Topic: Nearly 39 Weeks & Not Engaged Posted: 14 January 2011 at 11:58am |
I had a MW appt yesterday at 38w3d & baby hasn't engaged.
This is my first pregnancy. I've heard it's common for subsequent babies to not engage til much later on in pregnancy, or even not until labour starts, but what about firsts?
Has anyone else not engaged til late with their first babies & still had them on time?
Picking I'll go overdue!

I wrote this in our due date thread, but just in case it gets lost in the chatter: My friend didnt engage or drop until she was actually in labour! She was overdue by 8 days though, had her bubba the night before the day she was booked to be induced.
Thats all i know though, one second hand experience...sorry!

I was 3/5 engaged around 37 weeks, 2/5 engaged at 38 weeks and then he went up and down the last 3 weeks (had him at 40+6) but I don't think it makes too much difference how engaged they are!
All the best for the next few weeks!

I'm pretty sure Chloe never engaged until I was induced at 41 weeks. The induction went smoothly though and I was in labour for 17 hours from start to finish, which isn't that bad.

Lily engaged very early, but 2 of the mums in my antenatal group had babies who didn't engage and it was due to their position (getting stuck) or being too large to fit into the pelvis... I would have a chat to your mw about what it could possibly mean and see if she has any plans for a scan to check size, or his positioning...

I didn't engage with Cuinn until labour - I'd had an OB visit the day before and he said that Cuinn was still up high enough that it would even be a bad idea to induce at that stage (we were to have a c-section on the Saturday - I went into labour on the Friday in the early hours of the morning). He didn't even have any false starts (engage, then move) - he was just being lazy ... You're not having a boy per chance?

My DD didn't engage till I was in labour either, and I had a quick one with her (3.5hrs). She was 3.5weeks early...

Hi... I am 39 weeks and haven't engaged yet. But baby is posterior and so I need to do a few things apparently to get him to roll over so he is more likely to...
Wish he would engage though... sick of the heartburn!!!
Good luck!

Thanks girls!!
Lil_Nic, I actually had a scan at 38weeks cos they thought baby was breech - but turns out baby was in the perfect position, head down & back on my left side. The sonographer said baby was measuring a little bit on the big side/is "very healthy" haha but didn't seem concerned about not fitting through the pelvis? Hmm, might have to bring it up at my next MW appt on Thursday.
Ginger, ta for your comment. I'm not sure if I'm having a boy or girl - we left the sex as a surprise - can't wait to find out on the day though!
Rachelsea, ooh FX I have a similar experience then, wouldn't mind a 3.5hour labour heh
I've been going for hourly walks each day to try get baby to get nice & low. 2 days ago, I marched up a huuuge flight of stairs (if anyone knows Wanganui - the Durie Hill stairs!) & felt good afterwards, but not really any different. Then last night I had a couple of bouts of diarrhoea - sorry TMI - so maybe that was a sign of baby dropping? Hope it meant something anyway... otherwise I've just told the world I had the runs for no reason haha.

I said this in your due thread Jess but remember there is no rule or law that says a first baby HAS to be engaged before labour starts, or a few weeks before hand, she/he may engage a day before labour, just before labour or a few days before.
You can encourage engagement by lying on your left side at all times including in the bath and going up and down steps sideways, swimming breast stroke, and squatting
Haha, my second I dont know when he engaged BUT I had heartburn 3 frigging days AFTER his birth

I'm sure someone's already told you this, but just in case...sitting on a swiss ball is meant to be great for getting bubs where he or she needs to be...and i found it really comfy towards the end of my pregnancy.

Don't mean to scare you by that comment either! But could be something to just discuss with the mw perhaps!
GL with everything!
