Sorry for posting here but i need a bit of advice.
My friend has this lovely horse, nice a quite but she had a problem tying up. The problem is pretty much resolved now but she insists in the horse being tied up to a post for 6hrs a day with No water. ( this isn't because the horse is fat and needs less grass, its just her being her).
Now i think that i should say something to her about it as i feel this is totally wrong and the horse needs water! (especially today as it is bloody hot).
But i have known to say what i think too much when it comes to horses and i don't think she talks my advice very well, i do try not to be too harsh or anything. So with this one im not sure if i should say something or not. DH is her partners brother and we know them pretty well and he said he might go over and see her.
But i'm a little but worried as to what to say or how she will take it.
She also lets her horse graze on her grass, the other day i found it on the road (small road but still 100km) and she alls she said was that she must have been out on the lawn too long. (they dont have a gate).
Any advice please....

This angers me immensely!!!! I hate seeing animals without access to water, it is cruel especially during this time of year!
I have a similar issue with my father and his pigeons/chickens/roadside goat. It seemed that every time I went over there, they were without water so I now try to go alternate days or at least twice a week to ensure they have enough water. But I shouldn't have to do this. I always get the same answer if I bring it up, "I was going to do that later" well that's not good enough IMO they should always have access to water no matter what!
I asked my father once how he would cope in a similar situation with no fluids, and in the heat, it made him think but it just doesn't sink in.
If you wanted to keep out of it, perhaps give the SPCA a call and let them know your concerns and they can go talk to her and perhaps do some follow up visits to make sure the horse is adequately looked after and that way you don't need to be involved.

Thanks mumtoalena, but at this stage i don't really want to get the SPCA invoved. But it may get to that stage. We are really the only people that can see the back of there house where the horse is so i think they would know it was me.
We have to see them almost everyday, DH's family is extremely close!

That's fair enough. Perhaps then you could get an old bucket, an old tyre to put the bucket in and leave it near where the horse gets tied up so that it can access it and you could check it each time you go over there??? I know we shouldn't have to do things like that for other peoples responsibilities but then at least by getting a bucket and giving it water yourself you know it at least has some.
Tis awful, I know, you don't want to say too much to offend but don't want to see animals suffer either

Thats excatly right! it would never cross my mind to leave my horses without water, i don;t know how some people can be so careless!

Fark! No animal or human should be out in the sun 6hrs a day with no water. She wouldn't stand out in the sun for 6hrs without having a drink so wtf is she doing making her horse do that! Grrrr!

Yup, makes me a bit sad. To her defense she is looking after a sick family member of hers. But still thats no excuse!

When you say tied up to you mean tied with a halter and a lead to a post where the horse can only get its head to the ground or do you mean tethered where the horse can graze a circle? I assume you mean the former which is horrific - the later isnt ideal if they have no access to water but isnt as cruel and is a common way to graze if there are no fences/gates.
Bucket with no handle (they can get a leg trapped between handle and bucket and panic) in a tire so it can't be knocked over is the way to go. I'd just put it out there myself and if she questions you say that he needs water and if she isnt going to give it to him then its cruel.
Also another thing - when the horse is tied, is he tied halter/lead rope straight to the post, or tied to baling twine on the post? If he is hitched straight to the post with a tying issue that can be dangerous - if he startles and pulls back chances are his neck will snap before the post does. The whole idea of tying up to twine is that if he pulls back the twine will snap and the horse will be fine. I don't know if you need another issue to argue with her about though.

I tie my horses up to twine bowie, and very rarely to a post, but never actually tied to a post just kinda looped thru so if they do panic they can get away.
Yeas it was the former, tied up with halter and rope, straight to the post (no twine).
I must say as much as a lovely person she is, she just shouldn't have horses!

Yeah thats what i mean, tied to twine to a post! Sorry didnt realise you were up one the horses, should have read more carefully - i took it as a concerned person with no horse knowledge lol. Now i feel like a dick, of course you know about bucket handles and twine.

Well, I didn't know, and I've learned something, so your advice wasn't wasted  Although I don't see me needing to tie a horse up in the near future, not many horses near me!
I agree, I'd do it for her if she refuses to do it herself - the poor horse needs the water  But like you say, she just shouldn't have horses unless she can look after them properly... I'm just not sure how you can either persuade her to do so or sell it.

that really sucks, i can't believe she would do that. Can you shame her a bit by bringing it up in front of others? Whatever works to get her looking after the poor thing properly.
Horses need to graze, not stand around for 6 hours, and no water...that's just cruel. Yeah i'd take water out and just say you won't stand for the mistreatment, and have tried and tried to talk to her in the past. I would also say that she's leaving you no choice but to report her if she doesn't start taking proper care. Cos she isn't and that's just the way it is.

Haha, thats all good! No need to feel like a dick, its just good to know that there are other people out there that are clued up on horses too!
