    Posted: 07 August 2007 at 2:13pm
I went to Foodtown today and saw a new brand of Formula on the shelf called Nestle NAN. There is the 1H.A Gold and then the next one up and then the toddler one. It is the same price as the Karicare Gold Plus and pretty much claims to do the same thing minus the 'taboo' ingredient.

I have bought a tin of it and I'm going to wean Sam onto it over the next few weeks.

Has anyone else seen this new formula or tried it? I am keen to see if it's better than the Karicare Gold Plus as more often than not, Sam is having really runny bowel motions and since they are taking the Karicare Gold Plus off the shelf, I would like to find one that doesn't bung him up like the others I have tried.

Will let everyone know how it goes as well because I know some other mums are using Karicare Gold Plus and if there is a good alternative then I guess you'd want to know huh?

I will admit to running straight out to PakN Save after the karicare announcement at the weekend and buying up about 7 tins of Gold +. It will last us until we go to the Uk and as we will need to change to a different formula while we are there, I cannot carry 6 weeks worth of formula with me, and we will face the change when we get home in october. I keep telling myself that by then the whole Karicare mess will be sorted out and we can carry on as normal.
would like to hear how the new formula goes Renee, it might be a good substitue for Fay for the same reasons as Sam

Bummer, I'm going to have to find an alternative when I get the next lot of shopping. Do you think there will be a problem if I switch straight away? Hopefully not as I've got no more gold plus formula left.

apparently s26 is really good and does teh same sort of thing as teh karicare gold did but it jsut a bit pricier, and nurture gold is the same to.

I rang Nutricia re the Gold + formula and was told it's not going to just vanish from shelves as its not being withdrawn by the government - it will be available at supermarkets until the cans produced have been sold which could be weeks. After that they'll have a Gold + product on the market (the can will look very similar) but it won't have the ingridients causing the issue included only all the good bits like DHAs etc. The lady on the phone was very helpful and reassuring - the phone number for more info is 0800 600 036

Ok, so I have tried Sam on the Nestle NAN H.A formula and I've just been reading about it and it's a hypo-allergenic formula, hense the H.A.

He tends to be quite spilly on it from what I've noticed, but he was spilly on the Karicare as well, so I'm not sure if that's because of the formula.

At first he refused to take it, so luckily I was only introducing it once a day, so still had Karicare left. He is now taking it fine but I just changed his nappy and there was a huge runny dark green, almost black poo!!!!

I am not sure whether to be concerned as it could just be his tummy adjusting to it, but if it continues, I will definitely be concerned.

I may have to consider the S26 Gold as we had some stickpacks and he took it just fine.

I don't know!!!!!!!!!

This is what I found out about the Nestle range:

Nestlé is entering the New Zealand infant formula market with new generation formulations.

One of them, it says, is proven to help reduce the risk of allergies in some newborn babies and infants.

Clinical studies show Nestlé’s unique NAN HA Gold Protect formula helps decrease the risk of allergies in at-risk infants by as much as half. As many as 40% of newborns fall into the category of “at risk”, defined by having a family history of allergy.

Asthma and other allergy related conditions are on the rise in New Zealand. A recently published study of babies born in Christchurch and Wellington between 1997 and 2001 identifies 84% as having a positive family history of asthma, eczema or hay fever.

Associate Professor Pete Smith, Paediatric Allergist from Bond University Queensland says, “Clearly breast feeding is always the first choice, but in cases where exclusive breast feeding is not possible, there is good evidence that a hydrolysed formula is beneficial in reducing the risk of allergies.”

NAN HA Gold Protect contains 100% partially hydrolysed whey protein. The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy states that hydrolysed formulas have been “shown to have protective effects in high-risk infants”.

NAN HA Gold Protect and NAN Gold Protect also contain beneficial bacteria (pro-biotics) that help improve and maintain the balance of bacteria in babies’ digestive systems. The pro-biotic, known as Bifidus BL, has been shown in scientific trials to help strengthen intestinal health. Probiotics also occur naturally in breast milk.

Dr Bianca Exl-Preysch, Medical Director Nestlé South East Asia and Pacific Rim says, Nestlé is constantly researching and improving infant formulations to the point that it now has “breakthrough combinations” for infants that aren’t fully breastfed. For us the gold standard still is to have as many infants as possible exclusively breastfed for the first six months.

“Nestlé has nourished New Zealand families for more 120 years and from the beginning of August New Zealanders will have access to breakthrough infant formula products that have previously not been available here.”

I have never seen SMA Gold before either.

I have thrown out the Nestle NAN formula as it did not work for Sam at all. He was windy all the time, wouldn't sleep at all yesterday. He was up for over 12 hours, his eyes as wide as saucers bouncing off the walls nearly. His farts smell like something crawled up there and died and his poos are like dark green tar. I gave him 100mls of Karicare Gold at about midnight last night and he K.Oed almost immediately. I had half a tin of Nestle left, but it's in the bin now as it's terrible for Sam.

Might work for other babies though.

Not sure what I'm going to do when they take the Karicare Gold away, as that's the best one for him. Might have to stock up or something!!
