Topic: Ooo I like the sound of this (job stuff) Posted: 20 August 2007 at 3:18pm |
I was trawling the job sites earlier today, and came across this one.
Unfortunately the woman has been on voicemail all day (probably so she can root out who she actually wants to call back in relation to the add) ... but it sounds interesting. And, it's in Manukau, so just around the corner pretty much!
Argh. Can't they just know that I'm wonderful and they need me?
I haven't done litigation before (as in, my office wasn't involved in it) but I think it'd be pretty easy to pick up.
I'm babysitting tonight too, so I'm going to have no time to work on my CV (which isn't up to date - bollocks, bollocks, bollocks). I'll have to either have a late one, or do it tomorrow at work so I can send it in.

Oh, and in case you can't access the linky it's for a Legal Secretary/Trial Administrator for Meredith Connell (that's probably mostly relevant to BS She'll know who I'm talking about)

Sounds perfect Ginger - have heard that Meredith Connell are great to work for (BS would know better than me though). I do know that there is a LOT of competition for their legal jobs - not sure if it would be the same for their administration jobs though. Go for it - good luck!!

Presumably Simsam - if you don't get a good boss/firm, legal can be miserable ... that's what I liked about the ad. A bigger firm might be better than a sole practitioner and being so close to home would be lovely. I saw another job advertised by Rice Craig, though I'm not sure what they're reputation is (can't remember what they were like to deal with!), and the job wasn't as interesting (normal conveyancing/secretary stuff) - I'd go back to my old job probably over that one.

Sounds good, I used to do legal sec before went and retrained, just stay away from Chapman Tripp, too much politics ..... that can be the one big prob with bigger firms.

I think MC would be really interesting as they are the only ones that hold the queens warrant to prosecute, so think thats the bulk of their work, rather than defense. From what I hear its a different kind of atmosphere to other firms. (I have a close g/f who worked for them straight from uni and is now a defense lawyer)

I got a phone call from the girl doing the recruitment, and I am sooo interested! She said to definitely send my CV in, so, as pathetic as it is, I brushed it off last night, updated it for my current job, and emailed it off this morning. I don't think I've ever been this anxious about a job before I really want them to want me ... I don't think I've really ever cared before! I spent ages agonising over how to present my CV after speaking to the recruitment woman ... do a covering letter/don't do a covering letter, leave them curious so they call me in, because that's where I'd make my best impression/risk them overlooking me because there isn't enough in my letter/CV ... ARGH!
Steven Haszard is the partner that the job is PA to - I've dealt with him professionally before (I remember him becuase of the weird name spelling) and from memory he was a pretty straight forward person.
I don't think I need to talk to you BS about RC - I can't remember who your last job was with, but I know a significant tone when I hear one!! The thing is with that one, if I was going to go for that, I'd rather go for my old job, so there's not really much point because my old job is a shoe in.
The MC one though ... *sigh*

Good luck ginger!! Personally I prefer working for little firms (I work with a sole practitioner now, and my job before this one was also a sole practitioner) over the larger firms because of the office politics, but they're not overly common in Akld are they?? And I'm in conveyancing rather than anything else, which makes a difference.
Anyway, good luck!!!

There are sole practitioners all over the place minik8e - and you're right I think, a lot of people will choose one over the other. Me? I'm a little reluctant to go back to a sole practitioner just because the stress can be quite horrendous ... but then, I suppose that depends on your sole practitioner too. I'm a little gun shy!
Still, the salaries at the bigger firms are better ... though I don't know about the politics. It can't be much worse than where I am now though!!
I'm curious to experience a bigger firm though - just for the experience if nothing else. But, if I decide to run with conveyancing/commercial, I'd probably stick with a smaller firm because I can do the lot. For litigation etc though ... I'd rather go with a big firm I think.

What I meant was, openings for sole practitioners wouldn't be as common as vacancies in larger firms. I must admit I've been rather lucky with my two sole practitioners - the first guy was absolutely amazing, and I would have gone to the ends of the earth for him, but unfortunately he passed away suddenly.
Litigation is very interesting - I remember well how much I enjoyed working in the family section of one of the firms in New Plymouth!!

Oooohhhh. Duh I'm with you now (it just takes a while sometimes ...)
There seem to be a few around at the moment, though I've never noticed before to be honest. A lot of sole practitioners do seem to keep their staff for a while ... but then that too depends on the practitioner and the staff. My old boss hadn't held a secretary longer than about 18 months pre-me, and has had 2 in the year since I left, but I was there 8 years. Perhaps that says something about me?

Hehe, sometimes those relationships work because there's a mutual respect, rather than secretary and boss. I got on really well with my last boss because I took charge, and he appreciated that, though with my boss I have now, it just wouldn't work!!
Either that or you put up with stuff

Funnily enough, I've just had one of my customers in who has been dealing direct with our head office on something (I gave him the appropriate person's DD down there because although his thing is a simple thing, nothing in this company is simple!) and he has just been in for the sole reason of asking me how I haven't gone crazy yet, and how I cope with it. That says something ... I try to give things as good a go as I can, but then when I hit breaking point, there's no going back.

Good luck with the job application Ginger. It sounds as if you're well & truly ready to move on from your current job. They won't realise how great you were until you're gone
