Topic: Our First Hospital Visit Posted: 03 July 2007 at 10:01am |
Well yesterday was horrible! Jack had his 3 month jabs in the morning and was really unsettled all day, would only sleep on me, and he wasn't feeding very well. At 5pm he started screaming, it wasn't crying, he was fully screaming and nothing would console him and he would not take the breast or bottle and we had already given him pamol earlier in the day. After half an hour I text my sister (an nurse at North Shore Hospital) and asked what we should do, her response, bring him in to get checked.
The car ride he actually settled down, but being a neurotic mum I still wanted to take him. Got to triage and burst in to tears. Thankfully my sister was working at the time so she made sure we were sorted quickly and seen to. Jack had a bit of a temperature, and his heart was racing at 200 beats per minute. He was beside himself during the exam. After half an hour sitting there he settled down enough to realise he was in fact hungry so had a big feed finally and eventually drifted off to sleep. The doctor saw us not long after and was keen for us to stay for observation but as they were really busy and he had managed to feed he suggested we go home, and come back straight away if he started to go down hill again.
I never want to hear him scream like that again. All last night after I went to bed all I could hear were his screams in my head. Thankfully I think he was just exhausted, he spent some time on my shoulder at home asleep then on dh's then crashed in his cot till nearly 6. Thankfully this morning he is much more settled though still not his normal self so think it will be a day filled with cuddles.
Am so not looking forward to the next lot of jabs!

aww isn't it awful. Glad alls well now.
At Rhyley's 6 weeks one I didn't give him Pamol (as the nurse reckons he'd be fine) and he screamed the house down - sent DH to get pamol and he settled down. So before next one I gave Pamol before hand and was fine except for being tender on his legs. So jab time Pamol is my new best friend

I feel a bit silly now, especially for bursting into tears when I got there! But it really put my mind at ease

Hugs Sarah Beth, don't feel silly, hospitals are always scary (and I should know, the gremlins and I are professional hospital-goers ).
Glad to know wee Jack is ok, and if it helps reassure you, some children react to one lot of jabs and not any of the others, so he may well be fine after his 5 month ones.

Poor you and poor wee Jack!
That second lot of jabs are nasty. Both of my kids have had a rougher time with them than any of the others.
Glad he is ok though, and that peace of mind makes the visit worthwhile huh?

Sarah Beth that sounds terrible! Don't ever feel silly for taking your children to the hospital/Dr's. Mother's instinct always knows best - even if it is just to put your mind at ease.

I was talking to somebody the other day who mentioned that you can get homeopathic treatments instead of getting jabs, something to think about if you don't want to go through that again. I am very on the fence about whether I would vacinate my kiddies as so many bubbies seem to get reactions to them and I can't help but think what it is that is in these injections that makes it happen! I reckon parents get guilt tripped into it, and mind you I will probably end up vacinating my kids when I have them for that reason. I know I am babbling, but have been thinking about it a bit lately after talking to somebody about it. Anyway, glad that Jack is okay, not a nice thing to have to go through.

Gina reacted quite badly after her 6 weeks ones - had a scremaing fit that sounds quite similar to Jacks. In fact I rang my GP that night after the jabs (they have a nurse on call 24 hours) and she suggested we take her to hospital. By the time we got there and were seen by the nurse and then the doctor, she had settled, had a feed and fell asleep. She was also fine the next day. Our 3 month jabs went better so fingers crossed for you for next time. Big hugs

If you check out www.immune.org.nz you'll find a heap of independent info and research into the benefits and risks of immunisation
Not pushing an agenda here, but two of my girls have had quite severe reactions to some of their jabs (Maya had to have her 4 year one done in hospital coz of how badly she reacted to the 15 mth ones) but I have still made the decision to continue with their immunisation schedule as after weighing up the pros and cons for me personally the benefits outweigh the risks.

oh SB big hug for you and lots of cuddles for Jack...
we have been lucky that with all the jabs no major reaction to worry...but i did pamol before jabs and then each night for three days after as she would roll on one injection site and let out ONE blood curdling scream and then relax....Nope never want to hear that ever again either...think she did it aboutfour times...thats four times too many for me...
dont worry we will all 'overreact' but hey its our perogatives = we are mummys now and we worry!!! Its just good to have an excuse cause before i had none and am the original worry wart according to DH!!!!

Big Hugs SB , its very scary when your bubba is in distress like that and there is nothing you can do about it - after all we're the Mummies and supposed to make all the hurt go away.
I wouldn't feel silly at all! Its better to know he is ok, than sit there and wonder - or not do anything and find out later it wasn't! Lucky Jack has such a good mummy !

well we had a much better day yesterday but he is still very unsettled and not feeding well at all. It is becoming a battle to get him to feed (and I know he is hungry). His routine is also shot as well.
My sis came over yesterday, and deep down I think she felt we may have over reacted a bit, that was until he did a bit of a cough/choak (that he has done for ages, is a reflux thing). Her face went white, she wipped him off her chest and started checking him over and making sure he was breathing. All the while I sat in my seat and didn't flinch. She now understands how we felt on Monday night! (she called later in the evening to check he was ok as well, so sweet)
