Just wondering how this works? We live in Palmy and I have received an appt today for my DS for next week at Starship. Do we organise getting up there ourselves? Bowel prep and a long drive will not be good combination.... but the $500+ that Air NZ are quoting for flights is a bit of a shocker at short notice... Where is my money tree when I need it?

Try searching for flights from either fielding or wanganui? I booked flights for DP and his bestie to palmy for $90 and picked them up to go to wanganui because the flights to wangas for the same day were $300+

Are the flights cheaper if you come up a day early stay in a hotel? Or drive up? Take a day to get up here stopping off every hour or so, time consuming but might be worth it. Sorry not much help

RIng Starship to see if they can re-emburse you some of the costs - I know Hamilton Hospital covered my sisters costs while her twins were still in the new born unit....

Why not ring the hospital & ask if they are able to assist you with travel & accommodation. If they can not ask WINS or go to your GP as they maybe able to help.

If money is not an issue then I would either fly (try jetstar) or drive a day or so earlier so you can do the Bowel prep when you arrive.

There should be a travel coordinator at the hospital that can give you some info.

I had to be flown from Welly to Hamilton as my twins were being induced early and there was no room in Welly. Our flights & DH's accomm were covered and once we got back to welly and while DD's were still in hospital we were able to claim mileage from home to the hospital. All of this was organised by the travel coordinator for us.

The social worker for the paeds service should have all the information. THe Ministry of Health have a policy around medically-related travel and the SW would be very familiar with it. You should not have to be organising it. Ring Palmy Hospital and ask for the paediatric SW. If they can't help, they should be able to tell you who can help.

Im off to wellington tomorrow with DD, because we have been referred through the public system all of our travel is payed for. You need to register your DS with the system then they send you a letter outlining what you can claim for. Ring Starship and ask to talk to the patient travel person.

This is from the pamflet I have about travel assistance:

When your publicly finded specialist (not a GP) has referred you onto another publicly funded specialist, you may be eligible to receive travel assistance under this scheme. If eligible you will receive assistance towards your travel and possibly your accommodation costs. Your specialist will need to approve accommodation and specialised transport needs, this includes toxi, mobility taxt or air travel. Travel by privat vehicle or public transport is assesed on registration.

For a child to claim, if you answer yes to one or more of the following questions and you have been referred by your health or disability specialist, you are eligible to claim travel assistance.

Child to claim:
A child is anyone younger than 18 years of age at the time of treatment.
# Do you travel more than 80km one way, per visit?
#Do you visit a specialist 22 or more times in two months?
# Do you visit a specialist six or more times in six months, and travel more than 25km one way, per visit?
# are you a community services card holder and travel more than 25km on way , per visit?

contact the ministry of health on www.moh.govt.nz or ring 0900 281 222 (press 2)

I hope that helps

I have worked in Starship. They will help you with transport and they have Ronald McDonald house for parents to stay if your child is going to be admitted (?) so just give them a call to find out. If they're not admitted though I'm not sure. But they're the best people to call first and foremost.

Everytime we have gone up to Starship our local DHB has paid for it (this includes my son, DH and I). The travel assistant at our local hospital organises it all for us, even a shuttle from the airport to Starship. The only expense to us is our other son, who we want to take with us.

I'd give your local hospital a call and ask to speak to the Patient Travel Co-ordinator.

Good luck!

Thank you for all your replies! I wasn't sure how it all worked, and had believed that hopsitals normally arranged travel when they referred to other hospitals/specialists.

I rang Starship, who said that my local DHB is responsible for organising transport. So I left a message at the Palmy paed's clinic and then spent the day looking at our travel options and found the travel assistance information (thanks Aethalia!). I heard back from Palmy last night who gave me the number of someone to ring today, I have rang them this morning and they said to fax appt letter through and they will organise the rest. So, hopefully, that will mean we are sorted.

I didn't no where to start yesterday so thank you for the help/suggestions, it pointed me in the right direction
