I had hoped to use the pool with Gina but because my waters broke at home, a few hours before labour started, I was told it was out of the question because of the risk of infection (I think).
Anyways, I managed on Panadol and gas alone but it's different for everyone. In fact I could not stand DH touching me and giving me a massage.
I do feel it's good to keep your options open and go with the flow on the day - with this next one I hope to only have gas too but we'll see.
sally belly, don't worry too much about it if you can. I was a bit worried beforehand, but found that on the day all I really cared for was to get my baby out and well into the World

I couldn't stand DH touching me, either!!
What I see alot of, in my BF support group, is ladies who get so hung up on their birth plans and anti this and that etc get a huge shock when they realise there is alot of stuiff that goes beyond their control in a birth, especially when something, like blood pressure etc goes wrong and you can't actually do alot to fix it. Theyu sometimes need medical intervention or want pain relief they hadn't previously wanted and beat themselves up black and blue, cos they didn't get the birth they "wanted". Sometimes, this leads down the PND road. I think it is super super awesome to have a birth plan in place, so you have some idea of what outcomes you would like, but I wouldn't set anything in concrete just in case..

Agreed - you need to have some idea of what you would like to happen but don't get upset if it doesn't go that way. I didn't have a plan but I knew that I wanted to feel little pain (I am such a wimp). I just knew that I trusted my specialist to help me give birth and to deal with anything that arose along the way.

Thanks ladies, you've all given such great advice (as usual ).
I'm going to stop "worrying" about it - as pointed out I have no idea what the pain will actually be like & if it's bad enough I'm sure I'll be asking for whatever drug is available . I definitelty don't want to feel liked I've failed if my birth doesn't go how I imagined it.

I think as long as your baby comes out of you (whether you used pain relief, went natural or had a c-sect) it is a successful birth.
I will be bringing up pain relief with my midwife next week.

Someone may have mentioned this cos I havent read all the posts but I dont think the epi is as strong as it used to be. I know with Kobe I couldnt move my legs and was confinded to the bed and didnt feel anything (thank god cos he ended up ventous delivery) but with Addison i had one and was still able to move my legs, didnt get up but didnt want to anyway! and i could definately feel the pain at the end!!!

Haha, this was me too, and I wouldn't let it go when it was time to push..
The part from when I started to push, and up until she was born is just a blur.. I know that it was extremely painful.. but the gas did help with contractions.

I could definitely feel my legs all the way through. The icecube test is weird though, where they run an icecube along your leg and you can feel it there but you can't sense any cold!
You'll be fine Sally, just go in there with an open mind and see what happens. You might be one of those women who has a 20 minute labour and unplanned home birth and all this is moot anyway

From my very recent experience.....just go with the flow on the day!!
GAS is wonderful and worked an absolute treat for me!!
My biggest fear leading up to the birth was a c section which I unfortunately ended up with through no fault of my own after a very long hard labour and 3 hours of pushing. By the time the obstetrician said looks like your up for a c section, I said bring it on man cause I am so over this!!

I hated the gas when I had Andrew I threw the mask so that it broke so I wasn't made to use it again. So I didn't want to try it with Josh after the bad experience.
I had a shot of Pethidene with Andrew a few hours before I went into labour to relax me (as I had an induction) and by the time I gave birth I had a drug free birth.
With Josh after my contractions started (an induction again) I couldn't stand the pain and needed something. I had a small amount of pethidene and it was great to let me go into my own world. With Josh I tried to use water as well and it did help me dilate properly.
I had always said that I would not have an epi as I didn't know how I would react with it. I told my MW and OB that if I had to have a CS then I was having a general. My MW and OB understood and if needed I would be allowed it.
I took an open mind into Andrew's birth which I think helped me do the job.

You had an epi but wouldn't have pethidine?! Isn't the needle like so much bigger (they use a 14-gauge which is the same size as my piercings!)

I didn't have a mask, just a tube to suck on.

I had the gas with both boys - it was a tube to suck on not a mask, and with Bailey I got to keep it till the very end but with Aidan it got taken off me and I was told 'you cant push and suck at the same time' afterwards I said to my midwife you wanna bet I bloody did it with Bailey
She shut up and didn't say anything else about it!
with Bailey I had him standing up over the end of the bed with my head buried into a beanbag - I couldnt have anything or anyone touching me!
With Aidan I was made to have him on the bed - because he was prem, I had all the straps around my belly and then ended up in stirrups - I had asked for pethadine but she didn't want to risk it, she came back with the guy for an epi (I was supposed to have a c section) but was fully dialiated before he could explain it to me!

They tried both with me and broke both of them the mask first and then the tube, I managed to crack the tube.

LOL I cracked the first tube with Bailey as I threw it and it hit the floor, turns out she hadn't turned the bloody thing on, once it was replaced and turned on it was great LOL didn't take the pain away just the 'edge' but enough for me not to say anything LOL

LOL, I was exactly the same!! I was hoping for a drug free natural birth, but after a full labour and pushing on nothing but two panadol, the epidural was AMAZING!!!
I think you are right, just go with the flow, and whatever happens just take it in your stride The most important thing is getting your baby here safely, and no-one will judge your for the choices you make whilst in labour.
