Topic: Paracetamol doseage chart F.Y.I Posted: 05 June 2007 at 10:34am |
We have a bottle of the stuff we were given when Caitlin was only 6 weeks old and I wanted to know how much I should be giving her now. The lovely Nurse faxed me their dosage chart and I know we were all talking about this a while ago so I thought I would do my good deed for the day and share
5kg 3mls
6kg 3.8mls
7kg 4.3mls
8kg 5mls
9kg 5.6mls
10kg 6.3mls
11kg 6.8mls
12kg 7.5mls
13kg 8.1mls
14kg 8.8mls
15kg 9.4mls
16kg 10mls
17kg 10.6mls
18kg 11.2mls
19kg 12mls
20kg 12.5mls
21kg 13mls
22kg 13.8mls
23kg 14.4mls
24kg 15mls
25kg 15.6mls

Is this current? I got some prescribed for Kaleb last week and when Pharmacist asked his weight (5kgs) she said to give him 1.5mls - or maybe it relates to how strong it is???
Good to know though since his bottle is huge!

Just checked abby bottle that was prescribed in May and it has on the back pretty much along the same lines as two blondinis and peace just not as much detail-
0-5kg up to 3ml
5-10kg 3 to 6ml
10-15kg 6-9ml
15-20kg 9-12.5ml
Abby's only 12 Kilos and she is allowed 6-7 ml
Like gandt said check the strength, or ring another pharmacist and ask them would be my advice!

Yeah I'd def check with a pharmarcist before going with this guide, just incase you have a different strength.. It doesn't really vary too much unless they are putting on lots of weight.. I don't know abouts others' medicine droppers/syringes, but ours doesn't go in 0.1 amounts.. so we've always just gone with the whole amount.. I think she's on 7.5 mls now.

Also thats maximum dosage, feel free to use less if you know it will work for your child.
We still give our daughter the same dosage as when it was prescribed (she was only 6kg and was prescribed 2.5mls) and it still works like a charm even though shes now a good 9/10mths older and 10kg.

Kiara is 3 and Teagan is 2, now we're expecting our long awaited 3rd!

This chart is for the 120mg in 5 ml strength (usually pink, but can be different colours) Please check if you are using this chart because if you have the 250mg in 5 ml (usually orange)strength the dose is way less.

Yes! Definitely! And overdosing on paracetamol is a very real danger...especially over consecutive days.

even without consecutive days, One dose thats too high is super dangerous too. These charts are great but as someone else said Max dose - always phone for a pharmacists advice if your babe is a little bigger than last time you gave a dose - even healthline can give the correct dose if its in the middle of the night if you arent sure
These doses are correct for the 120 strength but if your child has a condition or is on meds always check first
On average one child a week is admitted to hospital for incorrect paracetamol dosage - liver toxicity is super nasty!

I took DS3 to the Dr last night & got Paracetamol he is 26kg & his dose is for 7.5ml to 10ml 4x a day max. He has the pink one & it is 120mg in 5 ml strength.
I asked the chemist how much I could give my other 2 & he worked it out to around 10-15 for the 35kg child.
I would go off what the Dr has prescribed as a dose rather than a chart. The ones you buy over the counter have the range on them.

Next time you go to the pharmacy, ask them for a dosage chart - when I got my last pamol prescription filled, I got given a little chart from the Life Pharmacy, it lives on my fridge, it has two columns, one for the 120mg/5mL strength and one for the 250mg/5mL strength... and tells you the weight-based dosing for each...

its the same as the one the OP posted myonlineself
The dose is calculated at 15mg per kilogram - but if your not sure how to work that out then dont do it
edited to add this is for babies over 3 months - but you shouldnt be giving babies under 6 months paracetamol without a doctors prescription
