I'll wait until Belle asks to have hers done - and is old enough to look after them.

At the pharmacy where I got mine done (just last year lol) they won't do little girls' ears until they are 5 years old. I won't let my girls get theirs pierced until they are old enough to care for them themselves and understand that the pain won't last forever. I hated lying down to go to sleep for the first couple of days so they'll need to be old enough to handle that. While I can appreciate the "get it over and done with" (while they won't remember) idea, it does take a lot of time and cleaning before the pain subsides.

I had to wait until I was 14 and I will try to wait with my two until that age too - I love the Michael Hill ad with the little girl counting down to her 14th birthday and how excited she was, and how impressed her little sister was afterwards.

When Amy was about 1 we were at Junglerama (like Lollipops) and there was a little girl about the same age playing in the balls with her and she had pierced ears. I remember her playing with them and pulling at them and boy, it made my stomach turn over to watch her .

My mum is 73 and has never got hers done!! She is to chicken even though she has a really high pain tolerance!

my Parents made me wait until I was 13 I think, they were originally going to make me wait longer too. I can still remember the pain of having it done. Now I have to wear decent earrings or I get a rash and if I leave earrings out for too long (like a day or so) one ear starts to close up, it blardy hurts to put it back in too!! So i've always got studs in (the ones the use in the gun too I think). Infections were awful too, I've had a few and the meths really stings!!

Personally I would wait until she is old enough to decide for herself. Little girls are beautiful just the way they are.

Jaycee, I agree with the MH ad, thought that was fantastic!

My neighbour got her two little girls done, one at 3 months and the other at 2 years. The little one is now 1 and she has no problems but the 2 year old got hers infected and they had to remove them. I think she might have been allergic to the metal or she may have just been playing with them but the earring had sort of sunk into her ear and was very hard to get out. It makes me cringe to think about the pain!

I personally will wait until DD is old enough to look after and clean them herself. I got mine done at 10 so will probably say the same age for DD.

In my household, Me and my two sisters were allowed our ear's pierced when we got our periods. This was because my father thought we'd be atleast twelve. backfired on him because I got my period at 8. Getting my ears peirced first really ticked off my older sister who hadn't got hers yet.

I think it's nice to wait for a milestone, like a first period, going to intermediate, etc, to make the earrings special and something to look forward to.

My parents were going to make me wait until I was 12, but I broke my arm at 9 and for being brave I was asked what I wanted and that was what I wanted.

At 16 I got the top part of my ear pierced, it became septic within 24 hours, turning into blood poisoning which meant I had to rush to the hospital to have it removed and put on strong antibiotics through IV for nearly a week, because it was close to my brain.

Oh and they had to cut right into my ear to get it out as my ear had swelled to the size of an orange and the earring was lost inside the swollen flesh.

I was told that had I waited much longer to get it out, I would have died, lost my ear or lost my hearing.

So that is my horror story about ear piercings! I will never get another piercing in my life.   I had my nose pierced with a gun at 15, which never really healed properly and always hurt!

I got my dd1 done when she was 4 and had to lie and say she was 5 to get them done. She really wanted them done and i didn't want her to have to wait till she was 13 like i had to.

I did have my top ear peirced which i did myself when i was 15 (i was bit of a rebel)i love having my ears peirced and still have 6 holes tho i did close up my 2 top ear peircings.

I think that with DD2 i will wait till about 4 or 5 again. I personally don't think babies need them and i don't like the look of them on little babies.

I had my ears pierced when I was10, but they constantly got infected, so I had to have them taken out. I also work in a Pharmacy, and the thing about keeping ears infection free is to be sure you use the solution they provide you. It helps to keep the ear sterile, and more importantly dry. Infections set in if the ear is wet due to bathing, showering, or swimming, and it's very important to use the aloholic solution to dry and clean it, straight after.

I personally don't like earrings in babies ears either, but also,.. the ear is an organ that continues to grow when everything else slows down. That's why when you see elderly people, their ears look very very long. A babies ears are tiny, and can develop at different rates, so piercing them so young can affect the position of the hole later, and the earrings can look unbalanced. Try to wait until their little ears are a bit bigger.. eg. 5 or 6 years old. Thats our policy.

I was 5 when I had mine done. I added a few more holes in my late teens but had them done by a professional piercer rather than the horrid chemist gun!
Basically the gun rams a blunt earing through your flesh causing quite a bit of trauma that not only hurts but takes longer to heal.
I would wait till my child was old enough to understand the process and be ok with it.

Wow I had mine done early too, around four maybe.
But for my daughter as much as i'd like to have them done I think it is her decision..If she asks for it than she can have it. At least that way I won't feel bad for subjecting her to the pain!!!

I haven't read all of this thread but wanted to say that I got my ears pierced when I was 3 days old! It's a tradition in the Philippines (where I was born) - boys get circumcised and girls get their ears pierced... I'm glad I was a girl!

Now though I haven't worn earrings since I was 14 and I still have holes in my ears. Every few years I'll check to see if they're still open and they only heal a tiny bit which I can easily re-pierce with a pin (gross I know but my curiousity wins). I'm not sure if that's just a weird thing that happened to me but it's something to perhaps research into before you pierce a little ear with a little hole that might end up growing with the child and ending up too big to heal over!!

Dad let me get my ears done whe I was 5 and I had to bike home lol that burned! It didn't hurt though I thought it was great. I've had my bellybutton done, my nose done about 7 times, and my ears done right around. I like the feeling.
I was gonna get Jakes ear pierced when he was a baby and would've too but with everything else going on it got put on the backburner and DP says no way now.
I reckon its up to you hun. IMO its not a major either way.
