Topic: Pelvic pain Posted: 22 August 2007 at 12:00pm |
Has anyone experienced pelvic/pubic pain in their pregnancies? Mine just started about a week ago - it's not really bad, but just a little bit uncomfortable when I walk or roll over in bed, etc. Have a midwife's appointment tonight anyway so will mention it to her but just thought I'd see if anyone else had been through it and maybe knew what it was!

Yep me... have had it since around 20 weeks and I swear it's getting worse. I've tried physio which really didn't help. I think I've got used to the pain now, and try and manage it as best as possible. I struggle to turn over in bed without the pain, walk, even sitting down for long periods of time aggravates it.
Definitely see if you can get a referral to have some physio, as it may help you. Otherwise panadol and wheatbags and/or a hot water bottle may help. The one thing that I found that helped in bed, was wearing satin pj bottoms.. they seem to help you roll over better.
Hope you get it sorted..

Is it at the back of your pelvis? Like almost in your bum? If so I've got that, and have had it since early on in the pregnancy (like 6 weeks or something). It was really painful rolling over in bed, sneezing, coughing, walking.
I went to the physio and I can't remember what joint they said it was, but I went lots of times of massage and stretching (helped a lot) and now I wear a smiley belt every day (under my clothes) to help support it.. it's still sore but no where near as sore as it was.
If I was you I'd definately go to the physio, and look into getting a smiley belt

Thanks for the responses guys! My pain is actually at the front of my pelvis rather than the back so might be a little different to your's arohanui? Mel, sounds like I've got what you've got! Looked it up on the internet and it is called SPD or something and supposedly not very common. Mel, did you try any kind of belt, or body cushion in bed? Might look into this smiley belt!!

I just had a look at my notes from the physio she said that I have Left Sacroiliac joint pain which is worse when lying and/or standing. I have trigger points on my piriformis muscle (butt check) which hurt like h*ll.
She taped me from one side to the other and gave me exercises. I didn't use a belt..and I find that the pillow aggravates it more and makes turning even more difficult.
I find a bath helps with the pain too. (not too hot though).

It's called Symphisis Pubis dysfunction, there's an article on it here. I had it during my pregnancy with Maya, towards the end it was so bad I could barely walk. Yet with the gremlins I did have it but to a far lesser degree even tho their combined weight was much heavier than Maya.

Oh that's it Mel, mine is Sacroiliac joint pain too - must just be you can either get the pain in the front or the back?
I got ACC for mine cos I could pinpoint an occassion where it started hurting (ya know how it goes) so everything was free, and the physio lent me the smiley belt for free too. I tell you, this belt is a life saver.. it just holds everything together and stops the pain.

Hi Emma, that sounds like me - I had a look on a few websites but didn't find the OhBaby article on it - thanks for that! Will see what my midwife says tonight and go from there - it's not that bad yet, but I've only had it a week and can already feel that it's getting worse, and I still have a long way to go!!

Hey Kim, how did it go at the midwifes?
I get sore sitting bones from sitting too long at my desk and occasionally get quite stiff at the bottom of my tail bone from lying on my back (helps the upper back muscle issue though) and getting out of bed... does that make it SPD or Sacroiliac joint pain?? Hmm, I'll mention it to my osteo tomorrow.

Hi Becs, that sounds different to mine - your's might be sacroiliac joint pain, or maybe just the usual back pain you get from being pregnant? Mine definitely sounds like SPD - it's pretty bearable until I'm in bed and rolling over and then it really hurts. Hmmmmm, is all this stuff meant to prepare us for the pain of childbirth or what............?!
My midwife mixed up her appointments so not seeing her until Sat now! The first time I actually had something that I wanted to ask her about...............!!

Hmmm, I think I've heard my osteo mention the sacroiliac joint before...
preparing us for child birth - Probably
Oh bummer about the appointments!
hey, just noticed that we are due round the same time and both in ChCh - sweet! would be good to stay in contact and compare stories
All the best for your appointment on sat.

i have that SPD thing too. have had for last 6 weeks or so.
makes walking, moving etc not much fun.
M/w gave me a pelvic support band which helps a bit, usually wear towards end of day. Makes me walk like a penguin, which I'm sure is amusing for everyone else but not so much when its you doing the waddling.

When I finally got to see my midwife, my pain had actually improved quite a bit so we're just assuming it's normal pelvic pain from the pressure of the baby, ligaments stretching, etc. Still hurts a bit at night but I'm sleeping with a pillow between my legs and under my belly, and that helps a bit. Plus I'm doing a bit of swimming and I think that is helping it quite a lot too. It definitely seems to be getting better rather than worse for me so I'm hoping it isn't SPD!

Hey I didn't think anything of this topic last week when I first saw it, but now have quite bad pelvic/pubic pain. Glad to know it isn't just me - must look into thie SPD thing...
Not so bad when I don't move, but quite sharp pains when I move wrong (rolling over in bed, splitting legs etc).
