Topic: Phil & Ted Queries Posted: 11 January 2010 at 9:01pm |
Hiya,
Sorry if these questions have been covered before but I always have trouble sifting through threads to find what I'm looking for
With bubs number two on the way, we bought a Phil & Teds Dash buggy recently. We're loving it! But as my due date draws closer I have a few questions...
1) Can anyone tell me the pros/cons of peanuts vs cocoons? Are both necessary? We've got the peanut (came as a freebie with the buggy) and are trying to figure out whether it's worth getting the cocoon too.
2) Since we have the dash buggy, do we have to get the dash cocoon, or will one of the other ones do? It'll be more expensive, even if we opt for a secondhand one. Obviously safety is important though. So I want to know if it'll be worth it? Thoughts anyone?
3) We want to get a Phil & Teds bebe capsule cuz it's compatible with the buggy. I'm thinking the bebe HS capsule would be best (as opposed to the standard one) cuz it is a lot deeper, and based on experience (Bethany was in her evenflo one until 10mths old), I'm fairly sure bubs will be able to stay in it for longer. If you've used a Phil & Teds capsule, what are your thoughts on this?
4) I hear that the evenflo and maxi cosi capsules are also compatible with Phil & Teds buggies - does anyone know if they actually clip in properly, or do they just 'sit' firmly in the buggy? A base would be good though, so I just want to check out my options.
If you've managed to read through all that, thanks! I look forward to hearing your thoughts...

If you have the peanut, id skip the cocoon, although if you do get one, anyone will do really especially since they are flat .. its not like it can go anywhere (the clips are different, but we never clipped ours in, like I said they are lying flat and the cocoon isnt going to fall out).
I cant help with the capsule (sorry), I personally dont like a capsule that doesnt have a base, I think they are safer in one with a base.
We have an evenflo capsule and it sits in the vibe, but its not compatible as such .. but it sits on the crossbar and it would be pretty difficult for it to move without me lifting it out, but it doesnt click in like a capsule does on a snap n go.

Hi kirsty.
I wouldn't bother with the cacoon. I have one which I use for the baby I look after and try as I might I just don't see the point of it (it came with the buggy). I now just sleep my wee one in the buggy straight without any peanut or cacoon and she is very happy in there. Again its not like she's going to slip out and the cacoon get crazy hot and make the space for her to sleep so much less.
I guess they sell them on the basis you can just pick the cacoon out and put it in the cot if they fall asleep but it is just as easy to pick the baby up out of the buggy and put her into the cot. Both ways they are disturbed a little in their sleep.

The capsule may not fit in your car. Its best if you try it out first as a lot of people have found their seatbelts to short to go around it. And I'm the same with lilfatty here and a capsule with base is to me safer and soooo much easier. Go see a baby on the move person and they can tell you what capsules go with what. We bought a Graco capsule and it would go in our P&T sport buggy but we never used it like that.

If you check the P&T website it will tell you what model capsules go on which P&T pram and you can buy a connection kit that goes in where the cross bar is fitted to click that capsule in.
I am not even going to bother with a capsule next baby.. going straight into a convertible carseat... Im going to be getting Jake out of the car anyway... but I can see why they are still handy... I may change my mind when I actually get pg again LOL
I personally would only get one with base too...
Im not sure how you would have the toddler seat on with the peanut??? would they fit underneath or above, though from memory doesnt the peanut click in where the toddler seat does when in nb/toddler mode??? I have not played with that LOL

Yep the peanut can only be used alone .. so the toddler would have to walk.

Thanks guys.
Noisybaby - the one we had for Bethany (that she hated) was a pain to get into the car at first but we learnt how to maximise the seatbelt length which was fine. Ta for the tip though, will try out a friend's P&T one to see how it fits before making any decisions!
Hmmm thanks first & lilfatty, sounds like the cocoon could be surplus to requirements. Yeah that's the one thing I've picked up on that made me wonder if a cocoon would be a good option as well - that the toddler seat doesn't go with the peanut. We'll be using the peanut more as a pram for sleeps etc. so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. Sounds like if this bubs is anything like Bethany then the cocoon won't necessarily make a big diff... good to know that other ones can fit safely in the dash model cuz a friend has said she can lend me her cocoon (for the sport model). So I guess we'll have the options when the time comes :)
I guess a capsule with a base is a good idea, but as Bethany was perfectly safe for 10mths in her one without a base I don't have any big problems with ones that don't have a base, provided they are totally secure in the seat. For the sake of curiosity, those who feel strongly about bases - what are your reasons for that?
Thanks melnel, will check what the P&T website says.
Ta for the food for thought! Anyone got any more suggestions please keep them coming :)

Hi Kristy,
I checked out the peanut and they are only useful for the first baby, the heaviest child always has to be in front , and the toddler seat won't fit with the peanut.
I used the cocoon extensively with DS - although he was a long baby and grew out of it by about 5 months. I used it as a carry cot to take him places too. The cocoon fits with the toddler seat in front.
I had a friend who was able to instal her evenflow capsule on the sport model, just using the front bar.
I like the bases for the capsules because they make getting in and out of the car for quick trips easier.

Hey :)
1) I agree - you don't need both the peanut and the cocoon as they do the same job. I reckon if you have the peanut (and it was free - bonus!) then I would stick with that. (the peanut's my fav). The cocoon is great but does not clip on just lays inside whereas the peanut is ridgid and clips on.
2) no the cocoons fit any buggy etc or indeed anywhere you want to put it as there are no fittings. There are two types of peanuts but as you have that sorted already nuff said :)
3) I think you're right about the BebeHS - it's a bit deeper giving you longer using it and better impact protection than a lower sided car seat. Plus is all clips onto the buggy so no waking the bub :)
4) no you have to get a 'travel system' which is a bracket especially made to clip on those other types of car seats. They will definitely be secure :) so if you have another kind already or want one with a base then it can still be used on the dash. You could always pop into a shop and ask them to show you?
Hope this helps - no point trawling round doing all that research if you can't share it aye ;)
good luck!

No experience personally with a capsule, but one of the mums in my coffee group had one that could go up to a heavier weight (not sure of the brand probably not even P&T) but because it was deeper their boy was a bit uncomfortable and they ended up putting a little blanket underneath him to prop him up abit
