Not sure where to put this so in the General Section it goes!

Just curious, at what age did your DD or DS actually start drawing things that resembled something (ie a person, an animal etc)?

I am only asking because DD is nearly 3.5 and pretty much only draws scribbles. However, I have noticed other kids who are younger than her are drawing things that genuinely look like something. It may be that she is not arty or that she simply doesn't have patience for it (she is a pretty rough and tumble kind of kid).

I'm not sure if there is a norm or not...Miss M is just shy of 3 and has recently started drawing "people", round or oval shapes with legs, eyes etc...they are recognisable though.

As you say though, your girl may not be arty, Miss M on the other hand will draw for ages!

Yeah, I am not sure of the norm either. She won't sit still for too long but she can colour in surprisingly well though with most staying within the lines - she is also expert at cutting things out and also staying within the lines.

Ok, honestly, I am cr*p at drawing too so I do wonder if its that. However, I think we might spend some more time doing arty drawing things when I finish work.

I was very worried about this as well when McKayla was 2 years old and another one in the family being 6 months younger was drawing stuff that you could see it actually resembles something.

But Playcentre believed in not drawing or teaching them to draw stuff and it actually made sense after reading the book magic places.

She started after she turned 3 by drawing stuff that she said was something but you couldnt really make it out. But now you can actually see it transforming and it is more "traditional" drawing.

They have to go through that scribble stage and it helps prepare them for later when they are writing ect. So dont worry soon it will come.

And that other one in the family was been "helped" to draw so it wasnt really her own work or her own creativity. I just love the fact that my child is drawing and that she doesnt draw a flower like I would draw a flower (which would have most propably happen if I drew stuff for her or showed her how to make it).

Do I make sense?

I think Littlies mag had a really good article on this a few months ago. It also showed the stages they go through, that was when I thought...ok we are on track, lol.

My DS2 started drawing people (circles with sticks, lol) when he has around 4yrs he now loves to draw with a ruler as his older brother does.

DS3 who is 3 scribbles & they all love doing coloring books.

I always thought everyone else's kids drew really well, but it is amazing when you see the changes to your child's drawing. So I no longer worry about it.

I sometimes don't get what my 31yo brother has drawn and he's made a career as an artist

Seriously though M loves to draw and will do so for ages but it's infrequent that she draws stuff I recognise.

Keira probably started drawing recognizable things just before she was three. Or she would scribble and tell us what ever it looks like.
It seemed really slow to us (from someone who was drawing full people at 2). She loves to draw but even now still prefers just to scribble.
It is quite fascinating watching all the stages of drawing they go through. At the moment she is all about people with fingers and toes (when she can be bothered)

We never really forced Keira to draw but she was always asking a lot of questions and we would ask her things like ' and how doe he hear...?' etc.

jack still scribbles and can't colour in and it's only since starting school that i really blame myself for not getting the pencils out more often!

i'm trying to make more of an effort with charli now as i don't want her to get to school and not be able to draw like the rest of the kids.

i know it's not good to compare kids etc but jack is super sensitive and i'd hate it if he got picked on because of this
