Any recommendations on what's good? I want something not too bulky or heavy, but that can also be used for a couple of weeks at a time if necessary.

Most portcots are fairly good, they have some nice ones at the baby factory. Depends on what you want, but most will fold up nice and small (well as small as portacots can fold). As your wee man is still quite small i would opt for one that comes with a bassinette attachemtn, all of which will usually come apart and just store with the rest of the cot. Have a look around and ask the store-people about how they fold and store etc, you want something quick and easy to put up and take down with a minimum of loose pieces. We had a kingston one, just a basic thing, which we actually used as a basinette full time until our girls were 5 months or there abouts, then used it as a cot after that, granted we lived upstairs so it was warm, and they were in the cot part during summer as well.

As for the matresses, it's up to you what to get. Most will fit the standard portacot matress which they sell, Kmart has both nomrla cot matresses and portacot matresses. As we used our long term we got a normal foam cot matress and had it cut down in length to fit in our cot as the standard portacot ones are very thin to allow them to be folded and taken with.

Depends how and when youa re going to use it. our set up always fittedin our car boot with the buggy and our bags when we went off to hamilton for the week when the girls werre little, but if you're planning on travelling by plane etc regularly, you may want to consider a lighter model or arrange to borrow one where you are going.

hope that helped a little - if any.

We've got two of the El Cheapo ones from the Warehouse and they are fine, portacots are pretty much of a muchness.
I agree with Janine about the bassinette fitting being useful, we have two portacots in Oz but only one has a bassinette fitting and when the gremlins were tiny leaning all the way in to get them in and out so often was hard on my back.

I just bought a Mother's Choice Oslo one off babystuff.co.nz for $95 (free shipping too). Just has the standard thin mattress that they come with, but you can choose to buy a foam one if you'll be using it for longer periods of time. Ours has the bassinet fitting on it. Really easy to put up and take down, as well as folding up to a (reasonably) small size. I would highly recommend one, although I haven't tried a baby in there yet, but I guess they're all pretty much the same, just the price varies really.

My only advice is to check how easy they are to put up and take down. I bought one (sorry can't remember the brand and its at my mums), and it was really hard to take down. It has a light, and vibrates (I got sucked in with all the fancy stuff) and ofcourse that is all a complete waste of time.

I have heard good things about the phil and teds portacots, but never used one myself.

Snap, Emz, I brought the same one and its so good!

Best thing I can recommend is to practise putting it up and down once you ahve got it as I had a wee tanty the first time as it didn't go quite as I planned!

Only downside with the MC Oslo is that its actually quite heavy. It weighed in at about 12 -13 kgs on the home scales, so no good if doing flight traveling!

MIL bought a mothers choice one for her house the other day and it weighs less than half of our safe n sound one! Ours is good if you have boot space to travel but not for any further - eg flying as is too heavy. both have basinette options...never used it! I used ours at work when ella was 2.5 months old. Was great but big so never took it down except when i left!

We used a borrowed one in OZ and hotel in chch had one = we pre booked.

Ella sleeps fine on the thin portacot mattress - i put fitted sheet on and when cold i put a blanket under the sheet. I also use monitor (with two pads) on it now...ummm long story about using two pads but lets just say i do not want to have a heart attack again!
