Hi all,

We are flying long haul to London next March with our DS who will be 19 months at the time. Prior to booking we had thought about TTC in Dec this year...so my questions are: Has anyone ever flown long haul in the 1st trimester and is it safe? Am I resigning myself to a boring holiday that I might not enjoy as much as if I was not UTD? What would you do?

Thanks :)

Hi there,

I traveled to Edinburgh when I was about 11/12 weeks.

I wore compression socks, just to be on the safe side.

TBH It's such a personal thing, what might be fine for one person, could be hell for another. My MS hadn't kicked in fully, but was still pretty iffy. The main thing was the exhaustion. Fine for the flights, cause I just slept but I was only awake an socialising with friends and family for about 6 hrs a day. The rest of the time I was sleeping!

Glad I managed it though, cause it was to see my little sister's first baby and it also meant I could tell my mum and family I was pregnant, in person, rather than on Skype

I flew long haul in the first trimester for my first pregnancy. I think I was about 8 weeks? My MS wasn't too bad (surprisingly) and I managed to sleep through a lot of the overnight flight.

I think you'll be fine. My doctor was fairly laid back about the whole thing. You just have to do what you're comfortable with. Personally, I didn't find the food in England much to write home about even when I wasn't pregnant so on that side of things I don't think you'll be looking at a boring holiday! What else were you thinking of doing while you're over there? Is it a holiday to see family/friends or to see London?

Thanks ladies...I met my hubby in England so its a trip back to catch up with friends and family and show them our new addition etc....but will want to show our little guy all the sights of London for sure...food won't be an issue as I am pretty laid back when it comes to eating during pregnancy, was more thinking how nice it would be to be able to have a few drinks with my old work mates and family etc....decisions, decisions! Also if we wait until we get back to TTC I will be waiting for awhile as I really want another Winter baby :)

I went at 24 weeks pregnant (we had it booked before I got UTD and it would have been me travelling at 36 weeks on the leg back so had to re-schedule it all!).. We spent 3 weeks going around Europe and I found it fine..

I did sometimes longingly look at DH's glass of wine or beer but TBH in a few places (like Italy with their chianti (sp?) ) I did try one teensy sip to get the flavour!

I still enjoyed the holiday but it was more about what we did during the day than getting drunk at night! My DH went to europe with friends when he was in his early 20's and of course that was a drinking trip but he said he enjoyed this one more - its just different

Like it has been said - just do what ever you are comfortable doing :)

We went to Washington DC via Los Angeles and San Diego for three weeks when I was about 5 1/2 - 6 months pregnant and found it ok. I was over the morning sickness but not really big and heavy. We walked for miles every day so I made sure I took lots of baths at night and had some good peppermint foot lotion. The only annoying part was the limited diet as I couldn't have cold meat salads and sandwhiches, so had to go for burgers and chips. I found some great maternity wear and bought heaps of cool baby clothes from Gap Kids so it was worth it!
