Topic: Primary School Teachers Posted: 09 January 2014 at 3:03pm |
Hi, just curious to know how maternity leave etc works for primary school teachers. I would only be able to afford the paid maternity leave of 14 weeks and even then it would be a bit of a stretch as i hear that maternity leave is only 400 and something pw before tax? What happens if you give birth over Christmas holidays? Do you have to apply for maternity leave from the day of birth? What if you give birth before the Christmas holidays, canyou end maternity leave early and go back on full pay? I'm not trying to be greedy but just would like some info on the situation. Thanks so much.

Hi didn't want to read and run. I am secondary teacher so not sure if it is the same but I am just finishing MAT leave. The money you get from the govt ($400 something sorry can't remember the exact number) you can apply for about a month before you go on MAT Leave even if bubs isn't born yet. Being a public servant I could also apply for 6 weeks salary which I had to have the birth certificate to do and did that through through school. The person who is responsible for your payroll should know how to do this. It was a form that I sign and the principal signed.
In terms of MAT leave itself, if you have bubs prior to school holiday and you take Mat leave it will start then. If you have bubs during the school holiday then you can have MAT leave start the beginning of the next school year therefore get paid through the summer break which is what I did.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info! Wonder if it is the same working at a private school? That was very helpful, i appreciate it. :) I assumed I might be at a disadvantage if i gave birth during school holidays but I see that might not be the case

Hiya, I'm a primary school teacher :-) When I went on ML for my son a couple years back. If you give birth over the Chrissy holidays (from what I remember) you will be paid for your full entitlement for the holidays as it reflects the time you worked throughout the school year. This means you may get a lumpsum payment before your ML kicks in. You are entitled to end your ML early and go back to work, I think the notice period is 4 weeks or so (from when you tell the principal to when you go back into the classroom). As fozziebear said, there is a 6 week lumpsum payout that is payable upon proof of birth, i.e. birth cert, although I'm not sure if that would apply with you working in a private school - certainly worth looking into though! If you're a member of NZEI they are really helpful, you could try emailing them. Good luck, and congrats!

Oh lol, oops sorry about the premature congrats then (but congrats for when it does happen) :-) FWIW I had my boy in February, finished at the end of the previous school year at 30 weeks and didn't start my ML until the end of the summer holidays/end of my current years payments. :-D

The future of a child is depending on their primary school teachers. Because it that age teacher giving which education to a child, it is base education for them. My primary teachers giving me writing education more so my Interest is in writing. Now I am a writer in www.resumesservicesreview.com online website. My base education was related to writing so It became my career in the writing sector.
