Topic: Qs about Gold Jewellery Posted: 05 January 2009 at 1:10pm |
I have this fairly thick gold necklace which I noticed has completely changed from yellow gold to a copper colour. The change only seems to have happened in the last few months since I have had Kayla and I can't help but wonder if there is some sort of chemical reaction to my skin that has effected it? I haven't been swimming in any pools or anything...
Anyway I have taken it back to Pascoes today and the lady seemed to agree in terms of it being something to do with changes in me.. I dunno.. it actually annoys me as it cost a lot of money and now looks like crap - and I don't know if they can get it back to how it was? It is only 9ct gold and my bracelet which is 18ct hasn't changed colour at all and I have had that for much longer.
So to the questions...has this happened to you with any jewellery whilst pregnant/post baby?
Also, do you take all your jewellery off before showering every night? I don't, and the lady gave me a lecture about how I should remove everything, rings, necklace and bracelet before getting into a shower, but I don't see why I need to..it's gold, not gold plated or anything - so surely it can withstand a normal shower? The 18ct stuff has been fine - just this one necklace that has changed.

I haven't had that problem with any of my jewellery, I wonder if she was jumping at any excuse to try and place the blame on you and get out of providing a replacement.
I always take my necklace, bracelet and earrings off before showering but I only ever remove my rings if I'm making something messy in the kitchen or playing with playdough. My wedding ring is 9ct and my engagement ring is 18ct and they're both still a lovely gold colour.

Hmmm most of my jewellery is platinum so Im not going to be much help.
However I do have one gold chain with a gold cross .. and when I wear it I dont take it off and Ive had it for at least 5 years and its still the same colour.
Although I could see how hormonal changes could affect a metal. You may find that the 18k hasnt changed as it has more gold content than the 9 .. maybe whatever is mixed in with the 9 is reacting to you?
Oh and I never take my jewellery off .. except I cant fit my rings at the moment, so they now hang around my neck.

My wedding rings are by the side of the bed now too.
I've had a good google and can't find anything that would do this to your chain. Some people find that sterling silver turns black or that their skin reacts to gold (9k reactions are more common than 18 or 24 due to other metals being used in the manufacturing process). The skin reaction is often an irritation or the skin can turn black. This is because the skin can become very sensitive during pregnancy. I can't even wear deoderant now and can only use talc powder under my arms.
I would go back to the jewellers or contact a goldsmith/manufacturing jeweller rather than a big outlet store like Pascoes. You often find these old guys that make the jewellery/watches out the back are the best source of info.

Yup.
I got married when I was pregnant with Ella and my wedding band kept turning coppery and then black and leaving marks on my skin.
I took it back to the jewellers and he said that it was probably a reaction to some kind of hormone to do with the pregnancy.
I waited it out and sure enough, once I stopped breastfeeding, it went back to normal.
What I found really weird was I never had any problems with it when I was pregnant or BF Benjy.
Oh, and my band is 9k and my engagement ring and bracelet are 18, I never had any problems with the 18k ones.

Yup, highly likely it's to do with being pg! One of those annoying things, metals can be sensitive to hormones and skin can be sensitive to metal. The composition of 9ct yellow gold also means that sometimes some of the other metals shift to the surface and the 37.5% of actual gold gets buried. The rest I think is made up of a combination of copper and silver and I'm pretty sure that copper is quite a high percentage of the rest. This is just my small knowledge gained from working at a jewelery shop a while back so could be incorrect, however maybe check out a manufacturing jeweller for more answers. They live and breathe the stuff so will know all about it
Good luck!

Haha, I'm glad I wasn't pulling that whole theory out of my arse! I also never had any issues with gold when pregnant with Alyssa.. Once the jeweller has cleaned it up I'm not going to bother wearing it again until I have finished bf Kayla.
So did you have to polish/clean the ring before it went back to gold or did it happen all on its own when you finished bf?

I wouldnt expect gold to change at all...unless it was coated and the coating has worn off (or do I mean plated..that sounds better)

Yeah I used my friend's jewellery cleaning cloth to clean it up and it came up almost as good as before. Then a few months later I noticed it was completely back to normal without any other effort.

I work for michael hill, and the reason why you shouldn't wear your jewellery in the shower is the chemcals in your soaps and shampoos, they can discolour your jewellery, especially anti dandruff stuff. Garden sprays, especially those used in commercial places like vineyards, orchids etc. Pregnancy and even menstruation can change your bodies chemical balance and cause discolour in your jewellery, I know my gold leaves huge black rings on me and my chain discolours the 2 weeks before my period.
If you don't want to buy gold jewellery cleaner or take it in for a clean (and you should do this often ans your chains get skin, sweat, lotions and potions and perfume "build up" in them if you never take them off) try soaking it in a bowl of warm water with handy andy or cloudy ammonia and give it a bit of a gentle scrub with an olfd babies toothbreish. Rinse and polish. Should bring it up a treat. Don't use gin, toothpaste or any other old wives tale, wither, you will wreck your jewellery.
And in answer to your question, yes I remove all my jewellery before bed, showers etc. I practice what i preach, lol!

Thanks for the info :) I have to say I only thought anti-dandruff was a problem so didn't know normal soaps etc can cause issues too. I will hold off wearing the necklace until I have finished bf once it comes back cleaned.
KylahsMum: It's about $18 to get it cleaned at Pascoes..
