Hi, we currently live in Wellington, a city we absolutely love. However, we have decided that in order to do the things we really want (travel, be mortgage free, more kids etc) then we need to move to another great, but much cheaper city. Dunedin seems the natural choice but I have a couple of questions:

1. What do you enjoy about living in D?

2. What are the downsides?

3. Which are the nicer suburbs to live in?

TIA

Hi I don't live in Dunedin anymore but was born   and lived there on and off till 5 years ago.

1. What do you enjoy about living in D?
Everything is in easy reach ie 10 minutes to anywhere, great beaches and outdoor environments, safe community feel, snow days are cool especially growing up and having a sledge to go down the paddock across the road! No transport issues ie good bus system no traffic jams, Family orientated community events, good schools

2. What are the downsides?
Well everyone will say oh don't move there it's so cold! Well really it is but you acclimatise to it quickly and because it's a dryer cold than the North Islander you just put on an extra layer and can still get out and about, (not like Palmy cold and wet winters not to mention the wind!), It's a wee way from other places and not the cheapest to fly into but can fly direct to Aussie. The large student population can at times seem to take over the city. Gets dark early in winter but on upside also stayd lighter longer in Summer-no bbqs in the dark!

3. Which are the nicer suburbs to live in?
Depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. I grew up in Glenleith which is on the northern end and less built up with loads of access to walking tracks. Though, a bit of recent development there. I prefer being on a hill as usuallu warmer and I love the dunedin views of the harbour and hills. St Clair again on the hill over looking the beach is very cool and very mixed socioeconomic if lucky ex state houses there have the best views and are solid investments.
More upmarket is Maori Hill which is close to town but can be very expensive depending on the street. Opoho can be quite student filled but some nice houses that are popular with renovators and young families, close to the gardens which are great for family days out. I would stay away from anywhere in a valley ie Kaikorai Valley, North East valley mostly because old housing, cold and not much sun in the winter.

Well I could go on and on and on, if you have anymore questions ask away. I love Dunedin and would live back there but I can't convince DH (soft north islander!!)

1. What do you enjoy about living in D?
I've lived here all my life and I would never live anywhere else. The climate is brilliant(once you get used to it), the people are friendly. Okay it doesn't have the shops like you might be used to but it makes up for it in other ways. You are 4 hrs from Christchurch, 3Hrs from Central Otago(ski fields, vineyards etc), 3hrs to Invercargill and not too far away from everything else.

2. What are the downsides?
Not the same sort of shopping you maybe used to.
3. Which are the nicer suburbs to live in?
Mosgiel is nice if you have kids. It's 10mins out of the city but it feels like you live miles away. Its has kindys, childcare, schools a few shops and most things you need but if you have to its just a quick trip to town. St Clair, maori hill, Waverley, mornington, but most places are okay. It just depends what you like and don't like in a place to live. You would be best to travel around and have a look for yourself to het a feel of the places.

But its the same with anywhere you live. Its what you make of the place that counts

All this information is really helpful, thanks! It seems that we have pretty much made the decision but need to sort out all the details. We are both secondary teachers so the next thing is to get in touch with schools.

I never thought that I would leave Wellington (and the shopping) but I'm willing to give it a go! And tbh the weather couldn't be much worse than here at the moment!

What are the suburbs of Saint Kilda and Kew like? We currently live in Karori which is a lovely family oriented suburb, and I guess quite middle class, with good schools. We would want to live somewhere similar.
