We have the Radian XTSL by sunshine kids. Its bit up there on price at $499, but it lasts till child is 36kg, and you can rear face for longer - up to 20kg.
I got mine from infantesimal in wellington.
I love it because the tether goes under the seat front so doesn't get in the way like other tethers do.
There are lots of reviews online about it, i think there has been discussion on this forum too, also the nappy network is a great site to look at for discussions regarding car seats.

We have a Brio Zento. about $580ish I love it, no tethers that get in the way. Rear faces till 25kg (important to me). A bit of a mission to install the first few times, but once you get the hang of it its easy. It should last till DS is 5 or so, so the $$ balance out in the end as I don't have to buy another seat

I also have Evenflo tribute, about $350 I think, that I have for my daycarers car. Best thing about it is it attaches with Isofix which is soo much better than the seatbelt method. (I wish my Brio was Isofix). Much lighter than the Brio (but feels a bit like tupperware in comparison.) I'm sure it is safe, but the Brio feels safer.

Both were from Baby on the move, who have been fab with installation questions and choosing which model is best

We have a Evenflo Symphony got it last week on sale for $400 reduced from $500. Link

It does the works, rear facing to 5-35lbs in weight, the forward facing and then turns to a booster seat too!

Oh we also have a Safe n Sound Guardian carseat (rrp $380) it's great too, rearfaces - 13kg rather than the usual 9kg and then forward faces until 25kg I think.
Anyway what sold us was the fact that if you are in a crash, regardless of if the carseat is in use or not, so long as it is installed and the police are involved, SafenSound will replace the carseat free of charge even if there is no damage to the carseat!

thx for the advice ladies! They all seem so expensive eeeek! I guess they have to last a few years tho and you can't pay for enough protection really... apart from buying an army tank to drive around in hehe
Also, are they easy to clean? Am sure it is going to get dirty.....

CJsays, I would chat to your local baby on the move. they will help you find the best car seat for your needs. To be honest most baby stores don't know much about carseats! Google extended rear facing. (Here's a link to a y*u t*be clip link ) It is soo much safer for you child if they were to be in a car crash. If you can get something that rear faces for longer than 12kg that would be great.
Also, Lil_Nic9, wouldn't insurance cover your carseat if you were involved in car crash?
