Topic: Recovering from surgery while pregnant Posted: 03 May 2010 at 11:03pm |
Hi everyone
Over the weekend I had to have an emergency operation to take my appendix out. As Im only 9 weeks it was all very frightening but I have been so fortunate to discover baby has come through it just fine. It has been extremely painful though due to little pain relief because of baby so Ive felt every little thing. Ill be off work for at least 2 weeks.
I have heard having appendicitis is reasonably common in pregnancy because everything shifts around and things lurking can get aggravated.
So I was just wondering if there's anyone out there who has gone through an operation in pregnancy?
Im just worried about the recovery and taking care of myself really its so frightening being in so much pain and not being able to eat much when I know I need to for baby. I want to make sure I do all the right things as I feel so fortunate to have kept my little fighter through all of this.
So yeah if there's anyone out there who has been through something like this please share your experiences and how you coped :)

Wow, that is not flash for you!! poor thing! I know of someone who had major surgery at about 16 weeks - she's right as rain now, and has a healthy baby!
Perhaps don't worry too much about not being able to eat much...all of the hyperemesis girls (and some with just MS) will be able to vouch that sometimes in first trimester and sometimes longer you can't eat much at all (I lost weight, had a pre-pregnancy BMI that was already too low - and my bubba was still growing away). I'd imagine that you'll keep picking up as the days go by and hopefully be able to eat again. Keep up the fluids and rest lots and lots!! Don't go back to work before you are ready to either!
I hope you feel better soon!!

I lost 3kg in first trimester and didn't get above pre pregnancy weight until 20 weeks. Just try eat a little and whenever you can.
I was meant to have my gall bladder removed whilst pregnant but the surgeon didn't want to risk the pregnancy so sorry I can't help!!
Hope you feel better soon though!!

I haven't had surgery but I did break my foot 6 weeks ago. I imagine surgery would be worse, especially as it's in the same area as baby.
My advice would be take it easy. I had plans to rush back to work but actually couldn't. I don't know if it's true or not, but my doctor said I will heal slower because my body was putting its energy into growing a baby.
I'm pretty much fine now though, and it was a good excuse to slow down.
Take care

i lost 15kgs by 25weeks with MS. i would survive a day on a handful of crackers and some ginger beer. and i still popped out an 8lb 9oz boy. perfect;y healthy. i know saying "dont worry" is like telling water not to be wet, i was terrified i wasnt getting enough but turned out fine. they get what they need. if you are having trouble eating... can you drink? lots and lots of water... and smoothies. (they fill you up 2!!!) 2 bananas, milk, a little squirt of honey, some berries if you have some (any really lol) some yoghurt if you feel like it and a little scoop of ice cream (just because )
pm me if you wana chat

Complan!!!
I ate hardly anything for the first few months until we found the right combination of pills to stop it all from bouncing back up again... Jae came out perfectly healthy... babies have this knack of taking what they need from our own stores, so they dont suffer if we cant eat... we do though Complan is good cos you can sip little bits often and its crammed with lots of stuff you need

Hi ladies, thanks for all your replies I haven't had a computer for a bit so haven't been able to write back.
I am doing a lot better now, the pain has eased and about to head back to work, although PixieL you are so right it feels very hard to do, I just don't feel a hundred percent yet.
My appetite is back though and I am able to eat again but all your suggestions helped through the harder times so thanks heaps :)
