Hi everyone,

My husband & I have been on o.e. for several years but are planning on starting a family soon and returning home for good before the birth at about 20-24 weeks.

Has anybody been in this situation or know someone who did?

I just dont' know what the deal would be with finding a mid-wife. Should I arrange one before I come home or wait until I'm back in the country? I'm just not sure how it would work out so any advice/experience would be really appreciated.

Hey mischa, depends on where you live. In Gisborne you are advised to get a mw as soon as you find out, as most are fully booked by 5-6 weeks!, however you could always use the hospital mw team. Good luck trying , baby dust your way!

I had a family member who was living in the middle east and came home at 36 weeks, or whatever the latest you can fly is, to have her bubs. I'm pretty sure she just used the hospital mw team and all was fine but that was her third bubba so I guess she knew what she was doing!

Here in the UK you get one mid wife for the pre natal stuff and then dont have a choice just have to have the hospital mid wives for the birth, not an option to have pre natal mid wife there, so if you end up having to have the hosp team dont worry too much is all I'm trying to say :) It would be nice to have someone part of the whole experience start to finish but I'm sure the hosp team would take great care of you.

My friend did this and she rang around and arranged a midwife before she came back. that was in christchurch. not sure if all midwives would do this or not though

I'd ring as many midwives/groups as you can, and hope you get someone who's had a patient move away recently - probably your best bet by now.

I'm in the USA right now but will be returning to NZ at about 30 weeks. It's tricky for me too as I don't know where we will be living (we hope Christchurch, but it could be anywhere, depending on DH's job) but we are going to have a hospital birth so hopefully can get hold of someone as soon as we know where we will be.

The first midwife I requested was full for August already - this was when I was 8 weeks! And the one I have (who is lovely) was almost booked. I would suggest you make some enquiries now if you know where you will be living. Then at least it's a little less stressful when you arrive home. Good luck with the move!
