Topic: scan = measuring big Posted: 03 October 2009 at 1:19pm |
just wondering if anyone else's baby is measuring ahead from a scan.
Had 2 growth scans so far, the last one yesterday baby was measuring for growth at 35wks, i am 31wks. So about 4 weeks ahead.
So just wondering if anyone's been through this.
was baby born early?
I see the MW on monday, but the scan measurement yesterday freaked me out a bit!

Hiya,
My DS was consistently measuring about 2 weeks ahead on the scans. Then when I was around 33 weeks they estimated him to be over 6lb.
However, he was born on his due date at 8lb 8oz.
I wouldn't put too much stock in scans - they can be all over the place - it's really just educated guesswork (IMO)

Pick me! DD measured big for her dates the whole way through, she was 2-3 weeks ahead at every scan and fundal measurement with m/w. They estimated her at 7lbs 4oz at 34 weeks.
She was born early at 38 weeks, I went into labour naturally and she was 9lbs!! They labelled me as "macrosomia" meaning having large baby syndrome, but DD is perfectly normal and is very tall for her age! Sometimes I think that they actually got my dates wrong and she was born on time and was measuring "normal" if they had got the dates correct. Guess we will never know, but scans are not 100% accurate anyway!
I had growth scans every fortnight until she was born just to check that she didn't get too big!

I've been measuring two weeks ahead at the moment. Am 37 wks on monday and measuring about 39wks, they estimate it to weigh about 7lb 4 ounces at the moment with three weeks still to go! kind of freaked me out but it's possible you could just be having a growth spurt and it will even out.
Mine has longer than average legs which probably takes up room too. but as peachy says its only estimation and not 100% accurate.
will have to wait and see!
disco :)

at my growth scan at 33.4weeks she was measuring 3-4 weeks ahead and nearly 6lb, which will make her huge when shes born. Will be having another one at 36 weeks to see wats goin on.
however after my son was 10lb 4oz with my next pregnancy I had growth scans as I was feeling large, they estimated him at 39.6 weeks to be 7lb and 3 days later he was born and was 10lb again. I really dont have that much faith in the scans but we will see.
An interesting thread to watch I think

My brothers son was estimated to be a 13lber and came out at 7lb 13 so don't put too much into it. I was measured to be 8lb 12 at 38weeks and at 39 weeks she was born at 7lb 12

With my son I never had growth scans but started measuring ahead from 30 weeks. In the end i as measuring 4/5 weeks ahead. My MW thought he would be 8-9lb. He was born at 40wks 3days weighing 9lb 11oz.
Looks like this is going to be a big baby too. I'm starting to measure ahead and my MW said she feels big.
I wouldn't take too much notice of the scans, they are quite often wrong.
ETA: What size was your first and how did you measure with him?

I had the opposite, bubs was measuring behing by 2-3 weeks on growth scans but my fundal height was measuring ahead by 2 weeks (go figure). At 37w6d his estimated weight was 6lb12oz he was born at 38w3d weighing 6lb14oz..... sometimes they do get it right.
That said, I am the only person I personally know who's scan estimate weights have been right. I wouldnt worry too much. They may want to do another scan in a couple of weeks to see how the growth is going but considering they work out the weight based on thigh length and tummy circumference there is HUGE room for error.

I'm part of this club too! I was measuring about 4-5 weeks ahead and scans predicted I would have a 10 pound baby. He arrived bang on his due date and weighed a nice manageable 7pd 11oz. It turns out he was a very long baby (58cm) which is what caused the confusion.
So as with the others there is definitely a margin for error in the scans!
