My second son is just over a week old and I am struggling a bit hearing stories of other peoples fabulous second births. My first son was quite a quick birth (around 9 hours from first back pain to baby) and although the birth was far from perfect it wasn't too bad.

I decided on a homebirth for my second (still very glad we did) and my midwives both assumed I'd be quick this time too. We totally never entertained the idea that I'd be a really, really long time in labour. Everyone talks about how your body knows what to do second time around etc So it was a massive shock to have a long 35ish hour labour with about 14 hours of active labour (contractions   5 mins apart or less). My second was bigger than my first and this is apparently why the labour was so much longer.

I just feel quite traumatised by it really. I had done a lot of work preparing for the birth (breathing affirmations etc) and they worked really well for large parts of the labour but I just couldn't sustain it for the whole time. My partner I think was also pretty distressed by the labour as he hadn't prepared himself for it being like that.

Did anyone else have a second birth that was like this compared to their first? Did you cope ok? Did you go on to have a third baby and was it ok? I'm starting to get a bit resentful when I hear of these 4 hour second births! I'm certainly not keen on having a third baby anymore .

Thanks in advance for your responses

My first labour was pretty horrendous - six days of contractions every 10 minutes and about 10 hours of "active" labour before a pretty traumatic delivery (this was overseas, here they would have intervened much earlier I'm sure).

My second was very different - I went straight to contractions every 5 minutes and we rushed to hospital. I was so excited, I thought I was going to have one of those awesome quick labours for the second child that I kept hearing about.

But, no. I just stopped progressing and the next 10 hours were terrible - they tried every intervention possible, including drugs, and eventually they had to do an emergency c-section because DS2's heart rate was too low and he was in distress. While the actual c-section was a better experience than I was expecting, the 10 hours prior were agony, both physically and emotionally. I felt a bit cheated because everyone had been telling me during the pregnancy that the second was always better than the first.

On balance I think the first probably was worse, but only just!! But my second was still a lot worse than I had been expecting.

DS2 was quite a bit bigger than DS1 as well, which was a bit weird because I put less weight on in the second pregnancy. But perhaps that is why we were denied our easy second deliveries - big babies!!

Hey hun,
I just wanted to send you hugs. Does not sound nice at all. You done super well to have stayed at home. Alot of people would have headed to the hospital. I have always had rather Quick births. However my number 3 was very mucky and a homebirth. Things did not go that well to be honest and i ended up with very bad pnd. With number 4 i decided to have him back in the hospital. I had 4 hours of pre labour then stoped. 6 hours later it started again and i was in real labour and he was born 2 hours later. His labour/birth healed me. And i will be heading back to the hospital again with this one.
DD 12 DS 9.5 DD 6 DS 4 DD 23 months and here comes number 6

Huge hugs, won't add my stories but I was warned that 3rd births can end up like first births, which in your case would be ok.

Thanks so much for the responses.

@Scaredykat Hi! *waves* I'm sure you will be sweet! All the best for your birth and look forward to hearing how it goes.

@Pumkino, thank you for sharing and your experience sounds really scary. I'm really sorry to hear you had two really tough births. It certainly adds some perspective to how I'm feeling!! I think I'm wallowing a bit

@Mumtomany Good on you to go on and have two more pregnancy's following a stressful birth! Hope this one goes well for you and thanks for the encouragement

@AandCsmum Thanks for the hugs...your body is pretty mean the way it fogs your memory really quickly so a third starts to seem possible If it was to happen I hope you're right about third births heh

Wallow away! I think it's important to recognise your feelings and the fact that it's OK to have not enjoyed giving birth, as long as you move on once you've wallowed :)

If it helps, I actually feel fine about both mine now - I was so lucky to have two beautiful healthy boys I kind of just forgot about the deliveries fairly quickly. And I am definitely keen to have another - just have to convince DH!!

ETA typing ;)

I've just had my second and after my first being 5hrs from waters breaking/first contraction and 2 weeks early we were expecting another quick birth with preparation that it could end up being at home and expecting to be early again. It was the complete opposite had her on due date and was 12hrs long not as long as yours but definently longer than first time round. She was in posterior position and got a bit stuck which is why it took longer, I am happy with my birth and coped fine looking back now and am very proud of being able to have done it without pain relief or needing help when she got stuck however at the time it was a different story, it was not what we were expecting at all however my midwife said if I am to have more and baby is in correct position then those labours would probably be more like my first which is good to know because if we do have a 3rd i would hate for that labour to be longer again, but as we know all births and babies are different so who knows what could happen.

My second labour was quicker, but much much more intense and painful.
I vowed never to do it again...but I did,and my third labor was much much better :-)

I had a fast birth with my first baby, got to hospital at 10.30pm after maybe 8 hours of very light not very strong contractions, I wasn't even sure I was definitely in labour, then my labour quickly progressed after my waters were broken at 11.45pm and she was born at 11.59pm.

I was told to expect a fast birth with my second, and it was not at all. My contractions were strong but all over the place. My waters were broken but that didn't speed anything up. I just remember feeling like it was taking FOREVER.

To be honest I don't know which birth was better though, the fast one was very shocking to my system and the second long one, I guess my body adjusted more to, because the recovery after my second baby was faster and easier and a lot less painful.

I'm now 27 weeks with my third and I have no idea what to expect! I guess I'm just trying to accept that I don't have control over it and it will be what it will be.
