Topic: Septic Tank Qs     Posted: 11 June 2008 at 7:18pm |

We've been where we are for just over 3 years and have never had our septic tank cleaned.

2 Q's:
*How often should it be done?
*What happens if it doesn't get done?

Our tank is cleaned every 3 years by our council, it is included in our rates. I think it does depend on how old your system is though, ours is roughly 50 odd years old.

If it doesn't get cleaned and emptied it will overflow eventually and that is not pretty picture

My parents just had theirs done. My dad never let it get done since the house was built (15 odd years) and the person who came and did it apparently gave dad a big lecture about how it must be done every 5 yrs. My parents one has overflowed slightly but because of a drainage thing my dad did we never noticed it when I was still living there but still its gross

It probably depends on the size of the tank though.

I know nothing about septic tanks, but I do know what happens when they overflow coz it happened at Willie's family homestead during his Dad's tangi coz of the volume of people that were using it and it was ewww gross!

I have been in my place over 4 years and never had anything done to it. It never smells or over flows, but the neighbours get theirs done every 6 months...doesn't help but thats my story!!!

Ours is done every 12 months and then a thorough clean out and maintenance check every 3 to 5 years is what we were told. Do you know how big your tank is? If your local council does it it's possible they have done it and you just haven't seen them. They just turn up and do ours and then leave again.

If it doesn't get done eventually it will get full or clogged which can cause it to seep out. It reeks, one of our neighbours had a problem with theirs and it was foul. The whole neighbourhood could smell it if the wind was going the wrong way. I think, but I'm not sure, you can also get in trouble for not maintaining it if it breaks because it can be an environmental hazard.
We were also told that to get ours replaced should we ever need to would be around 10K or more but I don't know how true that is. That could just be for ours.

We were also recommended to use enviromentally friendly products, such as toilet cleaners, bleaches, soaps etc as much as possible as your normal every day ones can effect the chemicals or whatever it is in the tank that break everything down. And don't flush sanitary items down the loo.

Best to ring your council and have a chat to them so you don't end up in deep doo doos.
