Topic: Serial Hcg Testing Posted: 28 May 2008 at 5:17pm |
Has anyone had serial Hcg testing in early pregnancy? If you did, and have a record, would you mind sharing?
I've been getting mine done every 48hrs and the last 2 didn't double from the previous. With my last not even going up a quarter.
Here they are:
4w1d 52
4w4d 151
4w5d 356
5w0d 798
5w2d 1718
5w4d 3129
5w6d 3656
Doctor has said to book my scan for mid next week. So have arranged that for Wednesday. I really hope nothing happens before then
I wasn't going to post this due to not wanting to appear silly ... but its hard not to worry.

Im pretty sure they get to a point where they stop doubling. Your numbers look great! And they are going up still

Neferiti, don't feel silly, I did the same when I was pregnant each time. To be honest, if you're feeling stressed it's amazing what a boost you get with a whole lot of positive comments from others.
I don't have my results handy, but I do know that once I was over 6 weeks it took 4 days for my results to double, and even then a couple of times they didn't.
I know it's really hard not to worry, but HCG varies so much. Research tries to box it all up in a nice neat package, but in reality it isn't always like that.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for your scan next week. For me, no matter what the numbers said, I analysed and analysed and worried and worried until I saw the heartbeat. And then I found a whole lot else to worry about!
Hugs. Thinking of you. xx

Are you plotting them on the graph? I got a good idea that mine were rising how they should from seeing a similar shape line to the graph, also you could ask the nurse or your midwife if they are rising how they should?
To be honest they vary so much from person to person to compare
and it does take longer for them to double at some stage, cant remember when though
all the best for your scan next week

Thanks ladies. From what I know, its the levels after 1000 that can take longer.
I have been using the graph. There are so many other forums out there (when I googled hcg) that people seem to have a vast range of charts with levels varying majorly.
But going by the PathLab chart that comes with results, to be 5 weeks you have to have a minimum of 10,000! That seems very high!
I haven't had any morning sickness either, which I did with my others. Mind you they were all girls lol, so maybe this is a boy? hehe
But your right kiwilaurie, positive comments from others does give me a bit more confidence.

Hi this is the most common ranges I found when looking on the net, and as you can see you are well within the realms of normal.
I'm not sure about how your levels are rising but i'm sure if your gp was worried they would have talked to you about it. I think if you can don't test again just wait for the scan.
3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml

This was the other info from the same website. I have also read that they don't need to double they only need to rise by 60%
In a bout 85% of normal pregnancies, the hCG level will double every 48 - 72 hours. As you get further along in pregnancy and the hCG level gets higher, the time it takes to double can increase to about every 96 hours.
Caution must be used in making too much of hCG numbers. A normal pregnancy may have low hCG levels and result in a perfectly healthy baby. The results from an ultrasound after 5 - 6 weeks gestation are much more accurate than using hCG numbers.
An hCG level of less than 5mIU/ml is considered negative for pregnancy, and anything above 25mIU/ml is considered positive for pregnancy.
The hCG hormone is measured in milli-international units per milliliter (mIU/ml).
A transvaginal ultrasound should be able to show at least a gestational sac once the hCG levels have reached between 1,000 - 2,000mIU/ml. Because levels can differentiate so much and conception dating can be wrong, a diagnosis should not be made by ultrasound findings until the hCG level has reached at least 2,000.
A single hCG reading is not enough information for most diagnoses. When there is a question regarding the health of the pregnancy, multiple testings of hCG done a couple of days apart give a more accurate assessment of the situation.
The hCG levels should not be used to date a pregnancy since these numbers can vary so widely.
There are two common types of hCG tests. A qualitative hCG test detects if hCG is present in the blood. A quantitative hCG test (or beta hCG) measures the amount of hCG actually present in the blood.

Thanks cuppatea. I didnt know about the 60% thing.
Its going to be very hard not to call my doctor and ask for another form to test - as I know she'll give me a form no worries!
I'm turing into a chronic 'undie checker'!
I can't wait until Wednesday! Wishing I'd made it for the Monday, which is what I was first offered! lol
