So DD is almost 5 months and whenever we go somewhere or when people come to visit, she bursts into tears. Even when her grandparents come who see her quite often. I'm quite worried about this because she is due to start DC one day a week in June. She won't really go to anyone apart from me or DH and just cries until she comes back to one of us.

Is there anything else I could do apart from just trying to socialise her more? Anyone had this and when did they start to get used to people more? I think she's getting better, but it makes it hard going out to visit people and going to different places etc

From about 2-7/8 months (I think!), I couldn't leave the house and go somewhere new without DD being hysterical. Even at coffee group, she wouldn't let me out of her sight, and was almost always in tears. People kept asking me if I let her socialise, as she was obviously so scared of new people (and we'd always done group things at least twice a week since day dot)....anyway, it did finally end! She's now such an outgoing little thing (although clingy atm as happens from time to time!) Having her in care a couple days a week was also so good for her (from about 11months), and she's learnt to trust other adults.

Here's the link for a thread I posted almost identical in nature to your (also when DD was about 5 months!)

My Daughter was the same at that age and continues to be shy at 2.8yrs, although she has improved vastly. I put her into parttime daycare at 8 months old and (sorry this won't be what you want to hear!) it was a complete disaster. I perservered for six months but she got worse not better, to the point that I just couldn't do it anymore. I felt that she needed to feel the security of one on one care from her Mum so that is what I did. My Mum looks after her one day a week, and this has worked well due to Mum being someone that J was familiar with already. Even J's daycare said that some kids just are not cut out for daycare and J was one of those kids. If I had my time again, I probably would have tried and in-home carer (such as porse) as I think this would have worked better for J.
The crying when meeting people thing went on until she was about 18 months old. She is still shy, particularly with men, but tries hard to be friendlier. I have started taking her to playcentre (where I stay with her) to try and prep her for kindy. She loves it, but prefers to play alone and observe other children rather than to have direct involvement. At home and around people that she is familiar with she is really outgoing.
