Hey Im really sick with the flu. Just got online to see if I can find some answers. My midwife told me to take down lots of fluids, panadol and Vit C. When she says Vit C do u think its ok to take chewable tablets with Echinacea and zinc also?? Or just plain Vita C tabs? Do u know if we can have strepsils for buring throat?? Alright off to bed again. Will check later and hopefully have some answers.   |

That's no good to hear that you haven't been well. When I had the flu a couple of months back I was taking panadol and I did take some throat lozenges (sp?) but they were ones that midwive recommended and for now I can't remember the brand. I take the normal vitamin C tablets usually. If in doubt, call the midwive.

i have just gotten over a coldy/flu yucky thing. its horrible when you get them while pregnant cause there isnt too much stuff we can take safely, but for the last week i have lived on good ol' fashioned lemon and honey drinks and panadol when it got too much.
big hugs.... its horrible just hang in there, stay warm and rested. MEAN BUGS.

I am hoping someone has an answer as I have tightness in my chest and had a niggly sore throat all day. I am hoping it won't come to anything but alas being pregnant and limited on what you can take I have a feeling its going to get worse. I don't want to go to the dr unlesss absolutely have to and I don't want antibiotics if not absolutely have to. My daughter had tonsilitis not long ago so have a feeling I am catching that. I too want to take vit C with Echinacea. Did you get an anwser from your mid wife on these Kellie?

Sorry chaps, echinacea is on the no-go while pregnant list. You should try and stick to under 1000mg of vitamin C a day as well (which is a lot) though there are heaps of differing commentaries on that one.
You could go back to the old-school pre-medicated remedies of warm water, lemon juice and honey, chicken soup and lots of rest...
 Hope you feel better soon.

Oh - and boiled lollies do a similar thing as lozenges - it's the sucking and producing extra saliva that helps to lubricate your throat - so things like barley sugars etc should help a little.

A little Vicks Vapour-rub in a bowl of boiling water makes a good inhalation (sp?) thingy with a towel over your head... great for clearing a stuffy nose!

Hope you feel better Kelly and Ann. I personally swear by loads of hot Ribena when I'm down with bugs. Ups my fluid intake and gives me lots of Vit C. Plus it smells nice and I get cheered up if I can smell things when I'm stuffed up.
