Topic: skin conditions during/after pregnancy ? Posted: 06 January 2011 at 2:50pm |
I was just wondering if anyone else here has had any skin conditions during their pregnancys or after having a baby ?
I have always had slightly sensitive skin but nothing to worry about . I noticed that after i had my daughter i developed quite sevre excema and now 18months on i still suffer from it . i have seen my doctor a few times about it and he seems to think i developed it during pregnancy . i didnt realise you could get excema from pregnancy ??? Iv been prescribed some stuff called Beta ointment but it hardly makes a difference and its getting worse , i get it on my fingers , hands , parts of my arms , under and around my eyes and other random parts of my body from time to time. it gets really bad if i use perfumed soaps or bodywashes , and doing the dishes without gloves is a nightmare because of dishwashing liquid. I certinly didnt have anything like this before i had my daughter.
if anybody has sufferd from this and knows of any other medications or natural remidies that may help i would be grately apreciated

Hi Julz
I'm the same although it is starting to get a little better.
The only other time I had ever had excema was about 3 years before I was pregnant but it went away within a month.
I've been getting it on my hands (really bad) and arms.
I was told by someone to stop using EcoStore soap (& bath stuff for Lily) and that is when it started clearing. There must be something that some people react to.
Tomatoes also give me excema now (unless they are the acid free ones)
The other thing I found is that the heat causes it to flare up and get itchier
Edited to add....
Sorry I just read and realised that I wasn't any help at all

Ive had excema and sensitive skin since I was young and the excema got a bit worse since pregnancy. Ive used alpha keri which made a slight bit of improvement on the itchiness/pain and dryness but Ive actually found that a prescribed cream called dermol is the only thing that will get rid of the excema. I only use hydrocortisone cream on my face tho as dermol is quite strong.

Hi Julz
I have always had sensitive skin and recently developed a heat rash too (only when I exercise tho) so here is what I can offer other than sympathy Washing dishes and any housework - use gloves. There are a few sensitive products but I just don't risk it. Soap - avoid at all costs as it will dry your skin out more, a soap free hand wash is your friend. Body wash - recently I started using the St Ives ones, they seem to be quite gentle. I have also used some of the Healtheries soap free ones in the past. If you are ever unsure try and test a small patch on the inside of your arm (just below elbow join) or on your tummy by your belly button. If your excema is crazy bad buy some aqueous cream ( or get a prescription for it) - this stuff is super gentle and fyi the best for shaving legs too!! If you can stay away from supermarket shampoos as these have high soap content. If not possible try and keep the bubbles away from your ears and wash your back after rinsing it out. I only use sensitive washing powder, always bought in bulk when on special and when you can, do a warm wash, or at least do an extra rinse - the residue in clothes can be a killer. If you have a top loader you can get persil sensitive in the big bags from Mitre 10. In the summer I find if I have a bit of time in the sun it can help too. I have been known to get intentionally burnt (very naughty I know) but it naturally exfoliates your skin. Please note I am not endorsing this practise at all and I have my moles checked regularly. I hope this helps and FX it goes away naturally for you!

I have had excema on and off since I was a teenager but it became worse with pregnancy. I read somethng recently (did a OB search on excema actually) and a few people commented on it being hormonal which would explain why it gets worse with pregnancy. Mine is also triggered by a lack of sleep.
I just bought xma ease- seems to stop the itching etc but I haven't found anything else really treats the problem (steriod creams etc).

Nothing changed with my skin, but post pregnancy has given me dandruff. I have never had a problem ever, but after I had my first daughter in July 09, I got a severe dry and flaky scalp. I got pregnant again when she was 5 months and it disappeared. Since my second daughter was born last September, I have it all over again...argh, I hate it! So gross!
Anyone with this problem and how did you treat it?

I got eczema during my second pregnancy, hadn't had it since childhood and the doc thought it was quite odd cos he said normally those types of skin condition get better rather than appear during pregnancy. Mine went again though and so far none this pregnancy.
Have you asked for an allergy test to see if you are sensitive to any foods that might be triggering it off?

Interesting thread, will have to keep watching this one.
I have had the same thing. 38 weeks into my second pregnancy I developed excema on my right thumb and a little spread across my knuckles. It still hung about after she was born and after a couple of months of it getting worse, I discovered xma-ease and it cleared it up within a week, also using dermasoft as handwash and all over body wash. It eventually cleared up by the time DD was 5 months and didn't have any more trouble with it. That is until 2 weeks before AF returned when DD was 9 months and it's now really bad. My thumb is red raw and the skin splitting, has spread across the back of my hand and fingers, and now starting on the ring finger of my left hand. The xma-ease doesn't seem to be helping this time, but I guess it doesn't help when I have to keep washing my hands a million times a day with 2 young kids + nappies and toilet training.
Interesting about the ecostore stuff, we use it for soap, baby stuff, dishwash liquid and laundry. The excema also coincided with us starting to use the ecostore baby bubblebath. Hmmmmm, maybe I need to cut the ecostore out altogether to see if it makes a difference.

I've got excema all over my fingers and part of my hand too. Started on my thumb like you Troods so interested in any ideas in how to get rid of it!
Before I got pregnant I had quite bad discoloured skin on my face (hyperpigmentation I think). It got worse during pregnancy but then virtually disappeared after - so way better than before. But just recently it's got way worse again, could be the sun, but could be already from this pregnancy (I'm sure it's only got worse in the last few weeks).
I also got that horrible PUPPPS from pregnancy, and hoping I don't this time.

The first and second time i used the prescribed beta cream from my doctor it went away , but it doesnt seem to help it anymore unfortunatly
Thanks ladies for all the advice , i really apreciate it , might have to start putting some of it into action .

Dermnet is a good website - recommended by dermatologist.
Interestingly, only 10-20% of eczema is caused by food allergies. If you've had dry sensitive skin (and/or history of eczema, asthma or hayfever) then cause is more likely to be genetic. I know of a few people who's eczema has been exacerbated after having their babies as they find they are washing their hands so much more with nappy changes/washing etc...that dries the skin and really doesn't help the eczema...
Seeing a dermatologist before christmas for my DD was the best $100 I've spent - We finally have a regime that is working for her. Maybe something to consider if the GP is running out of suggestions that are effective?
On thought - Is your steroid an ointment or a cream? We've noticed a HUGE difference switching to an ointment for DD's eczema - so, not increasing the strength of the steroid as such, but what it is mixed up in.
Good luck! Eczema is sucky!
