Hi there mums

I have a question regarding solids. At what age did you start feeding your baby mashed food? Ollie is approaching 7 months next week and he loves his food and is eating 3 x pureed tins of food per day. My problem at the moment is that I have tried to feed him mashed food but he has gagged and vomited the food a couple of times. At this stage he doesn't have any teeth yet - do you think I should wait a bit longer until he has some teeth or should I still keep trying? It makes me so sad to see him vomiting up his food

Isla is eating more than that, but also cannot tolerate any lumps yet. She is only having the blue tins/jars and homemade fruit/veges and the 4month+ baby rice due to allergies. She eats 1 1/2 tins (or equivalant) 3 times a day, 7am, 12, and 5pm after breast feed.

Alyssa still gags and vomits when I try and give her mashed foods, and she's almost 10 months old. She has 6 teeth and still doesn't try and chew so I am just continuing to give her pureed foods until such time that she really wants to go for lumpier stuff.. So I guess there is no "right" or "normal" time for babies to progress if they just don't want to.

My son is 10 months altho he does not eat a lot of food, less than half a jar (still thriving tho)
He is now onto lumpy food. It took us such a long time for him to eat lumps! As said above I think there is no right or wrong time to eat lumps, I think when they are good and ready they will eat it. As long as they are eating I wouldn't stress about it!

I wouldn't be concerned until at least the 9m mark, some babies are only introduced to solids at 6m! Get as smooth a mashed consistency as you can - so it's not too different from what he's used to - and try it say, once a week.

My answer would read almost exactly what Kellz said, just swap the name Isla for Ella and we're away!

He still gets good nutrition from pureed food, so not to worry, chick!  I figure it's easier to prepare her meals with a blender rather than a fork, so I'm not worried!  Ella still gags on her farex 'till she vomits, if I don't make it runny enough.

Try different textures rather than lumps, watties does a box of baby muesli, its not lumpy but grainy, might be worth a go.

There is a window of opportunity for introducing lumpier foods, it's between 6-8 mths, which according to the 'experts' is the time when babies are most receptive to new tastes and textures. So perserverance may be the key.

But in saying that, some babies never do mashed food at all and go straight from pureed food to finger foods, and IMHO there's nothing wrong with that.

Mercedes isn't a big fan of lumps, she gags and blows raspberries and puts on a good old performance, but she has a mean mummy so if she doesn't eat what she's given she goes hungry.

Yep, that was Ella.. at 7.5 months she started wanting finger foods, so I gave them to her, cautiously of course, but she preferred them to mashed things (and the mashed stuff looked gross too )

It took a while for James to get used to mash and soft lumps but now he it's it fine he used to gag and vomit a bit I just tried him about once a week and eventually he started to eat it with no problems. He has not teeth either and eats a crusket pretty good now too.

Thanks for your advice ladies I am going to keep going with the pureed foods for now and will slowly introduce little bits of mashed food maybe once a week. Was talking to my sister today about it also as she has two girls and she said that she started giving mashed foods around 8-9 months.

Leave lumps till baby is ready, they tend to do really well at guiding. I left Olivia to decide when she would move on to lumps - 8 months. Unfortunately she got sick and chucked that in. When she bounced back she was onto finger food and scoffing everything in sight. Not to worry, you are doing a fab job by trying though
