I have to have an elective C Section for this baby as its too close to my last one which was an emergency C Section after my labour going on for over 45 hours, and it wouldnt be safe to try for a VBAC
I am feeling quite scared about having another C Section because of the things that went wrong last time. I had a bleed but that was caused by the MW puting a small tear in my cervix where she had to push Cadens head up for the surgon, I had a blood transfusion. I also got swollen/decended bowels, and that was horrible!

I didnt have any problems with my wound getting infected or anything, but the recovery was hard cos id laboured for 47ish hours and I was tired and sore.

Anyways, so what do they do for an elective?

Do they take their time more to get baby out?

Will i be able to hold the baby once its out, as i didnt with Caden cos they needed to give him oxygen etc

Do they cut on the same scar line?

Was your recovery much easier after an elective than your emergency one?

Im just freaking out a little bit, I really dont want to have to go through what I went through last time, especially with my bowels, that was scary!

With the elective you go in the day before to sign consent forms, get given your pre-op wash stuff, medication & have a basic chat, for what to expect & what you need to take. eg you arent allowed to eat after a certain time that night & what stuff you need for bubs.

On the day of your elective you go in early & get prep'd for theater & stats taken etc. You then head into theather & your epi is given (boy does it hurt compared to when you are in labour )

I guess they take their time a bit. My elective C was filmd/photographed for educational purposes, so they did everything by the book & took their time

yes they cut the same line

depending on baby, yes you get to hold straight away

yes I found my elective recovery easier as I wasnt recovering from a 50odd hr labour aswell. But having a 2.5yr old that still wanted to be picked up was a wee issue in the weeks after

Hey, with my elective I had two shots of steriods on the two days before the birth (he was only 38 weeks though so that might not be standard), was told not to eat or drink from 7pm the night before. Was suppose to of been given antacids to take but they forgot so I took them in the morning at the hospital.
Was told to arrive at hospital at 7am, once there I was given a gown to change into, the obs came and saw me and talked over some stuff and got me to sign some forms and then he marked where the incision would be (he also did a quick scan as I would have had a natural had Spencer turned). Then the aneasathetist (sp?) came to see me and talked over the spinal, what would happen in an emergency etc etc. I possibly signed another form not sure.
I was then taken into surgery, whilst Dh was given surgical outfit to wear, they did the spinal without him being there. Mine didn't hurt really, the local stung a little bit that was all. Once that is in and working they put the catheter in and set up the BP monitor and other bits. Then Dh came in and sat next to me. They did the surgery and Spencer was born, they held him up for me to see (but I could only see his hands and feet...lol). Then they took him over to be suctioned, cleaned and weighed, DH went with him and took pics, the DH carried him over to me and I had cuddles whilst they stitched me up. DH then took him whilst they transfered me to a different bed and then they tucked him onto the bed with me to be wheeled to recovery and there he was stripped down to nappy for skin to skin and his first feed and that was only 20 mins after he was born.

You won't have dilated at all so they shouldn't need to move baby back up to be delivered and the chances of things going wrong are greatly reduced.

We had a planned C/S at 37 weeks. It all went very smoothly.
I did the steroid shots 2 days before and they gave me some pills to take the night before. Luckily we were first on the list that morning so didn't have any waiting time. We arrived at the hospital at 0700 and by 0830 I was in surgery. 0903 & 0904 the girls were yanked out.

(TMI) The only suggestion I have is get your public hair waxed a week or so before hand because they shave you on the day if you don't. I got mine done a week before hand and was so glad I did! I didn't want any nurse coming at me with a razor lol! Mind you the lady that waxed me thought it was hilarious, me getting waxed at 37 weeks pregnant with twins. I guess it was a sight

The whole op for me took 45mins. That includes getting stitched up. The girls were born one minute apart. It never felt rushed but it certainly didn't take half the time I expected. DH had just sat down next to me when one of the doctors asked him if he wanted to see his first baby! I was shocked I thought they were still preping me didn't actually think they had a baby out already haha! Everyone was really lovely and made me feel very relaxed and easy about the procedure. The only time I felt nervous was when I was getting the spinal and that was only because it suddenly hit me that I was about to become a Momma!

I haven't had anything but an elective so I'm not sure about the comparison but I was really happy with the whole procedure and will be having any future babies the same way. I hope it all goes really well (and I'm sure it will ) I'm sure it will be nothing like your last experiance. Best of luck

I got the shots because they told me that with identical twins that share a placenta they won't go past 37 weeks naturally (if that makes sense) So they had to plan it for 37 weeks.
Now I can't quite remember the explaination but I'm sure its just to get their lungs ready because they aren't fully developed. I think you can choose not to have the shots but I'm pretty sure its gives you less chance of bubs having breathing probs when he or she arrives.

They'll give you the full run down well before the op but mayby check with your LMC if your concerned at all. It always pays to know as much info as you can so you can feel totally comfortable with whats happening

Oh ok cool, thanks girls.

My MW told me that at 30 weeks she will refer me to a specialist and he will discuss with me my options and ascess my situation, he might even suggest to me tha i try for a VBAC, but Im so sure I want to do that with the risk of unterine rupsure! I guess he will let me know whats best for me.
If I do have an elective(which Im pretty sure I will have to) I dont want any risk of going into labour so Im hoping to have it done at 38-39 weeks...just to be safe.

Public hospitals do push for VBAC as much as possible because of tight budgets so if an elective is what your set on don't let them talk you out of it. Stay strong on what ever you decide because its your body and your baby. They tried to push me into a VBAC and I told them to get stuffed lol! Needless to say I got my way in the end and so glad I did. I was set on an elective because I was more in control which suited me. I knew exactly what was happening every step of the way.

If you want a c-section rather than a VBAC then tell the OBs that you want to do that.
Some OBs are pro c-sections & others are pro VBAC.
Sounds like you had a really really rough time with your first!

I'm very pro VBAC myself so I don't really have any advice but thought I wul post & say good luck

Yep it was really rough I never want to go through that again! I would probably want to try for a VBAC if I was say 2 years inbetween the pregnancys, but because it only 14 months between I have the risk of my uterus bursting, and if my labour is anything like the last one I dont want to end up wiht another emergency C Section.

Id be really upset and angry if they told me they wanted me to do a VBAC, I would actually tell them to get stuffed.

Its your body & your choice Shez, they cant make you have VBAC
Esp with your circumstances (very simmillar to mine- failed to progress after long labour, with mal-presented large bubs & my misproportioned pelvis)

Initially I was wanting VBAC & was allowed to go over 1 week before my elective date, because the longer bubs stayed in, the larger he got & harder to push out & greater the rupture risk. My specialist & mw were very supportive in my decision

But yea- who in their right mind would want to do that twice?

lol I reckon! it was hellllll on my body and my mind! I definitly dont want to go down that road again!
Caden was a big baby aswell, he was 9lb 8oz! So if this baby is a big one aswell then my chances of the same thing happening will be quite strong. Caden got stuck in my pelvis, he had a huge dent across his head where he had been trying to come down but couldnt, so there was just no way I was going to be able to push him out. He has a big head too!

My MW said that I will need a CS, but she still has to refer me to the specialist, I have met him before(when I was over due) and he seems really nice and fair. Im sure it will be all good I do feel better about it now.

I don't have anything to add except that there are two(?) brochures available at hospitals - and your mw likely has some too - about all the details of elective c/s.

Sheza just so you know I had 19 months between my boys & they were not worried in the slightest about rupturing.
My first was 31 hours of labour, induced for pre-eclampsia, posterior baby, distressed & stuck, 9lb2 baby. He came out with a huge lump on his head whee he got stuck in my pelvis.
Baby #2 was different, they just gave me a time limit of 9 hours for him to arrive in before they pulled the plug & said "c-section time". He was 9lb 4.
Baby #3 was my little girl. Home waterbirth & 8lb15oz but her head was 2 cm bigger than both of my boys, yet I didn't have any issues with her.

At the end of the day if you want that c-section then don't let them say no. I really don't think you will have any issues though

I think its cos there is only 14 months between Caden and this one, I think if I had of got pregnant when he was 10 months they would let me try for a VBAC.
Im just so nervous that if I try for a VBAC that Ill have to go through the same thing as I did with Caden, so a C Section is maybe the safe way for me to go.
