    Posted: 18 April 2007 at 9:03pm
For the past couple of days, my tailbone has been getting progressively sorer... I thought I may have strained something at the gym - but can't have as its my bone not muscle thats hurting, although when I am bent over (Like I was today in the garden) then straightened back up it hurt so bad, and tonight just getting up of the couch its hurting.

I just googled 'sore tailbone pregnancy' and found an interesting forum that probably explains that its normal http://www.pregnancy-info.net/QA/answers-tailbone_pain_/
Someone mentioned something about a tilted uterus (so many things to worry about!!) I'll talk to my midwife when I meet her next Friday.

But in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone here has had this problem and how long did it last for and what did you do to stop the pain?

I always get a sore tail bone whetehr im pregs or not, but mention it to your midwife and she might be able to give you ways on hwo to relieve the pain.
try sitting on a chair backwards (liek kitchen chair), or on a cushion ont eh floor with your bak up against a wall or the couch.

Your bones may be a bit softer and more susceptible to getting hurt/sore during and just after pregnancy.. although you might be a bit too early pg for that I'm not sure. Hope you get some answers and remedies from your mw soon.

I had it a few times earlier on (I guess around 15-20wks??) but it went away. I only had it when I sat down every now and then, so I didn't really do anything apart from get in a different position, like sitting back further in the chair. I did get my back re-aligned by an osteopath around that time, so maybe that helped. You could try and osteo or chiro if it doesn't improve.

Save up & go to on osteopath or chiro after the birth, no later thaan say 2mnths after to reline everything.
In the meantime you could get a referal from the m/w to go to physio. They give you some exercises too do & maybe a belt for support.
I go through the same thing, sometimes i can even hear my tailbone "snapping". Its not good.

I have had this even before pregnancy too. It seems to be worse after being in one position for a long period of time. I find it helpful to tilt my pelvis forward (like there's a string tied to your pubic bone and you are pulling it forward) and do this as much as possible (long term). Most females have a habit of pushing their pelvis the other way and we get problems with our tail bones spasming etc like you are describing. Sometimes when it's real bad pain I go and lie on my bed on my side and curl my knees up as far as I can, to get that proper tilt happening.

bringing this thread back from last year when I posted it - yesterday and more today, I have had a slight twinge in my lower tailbone AGAIN.
I am totally freaking out, cos last time this happened I miscarried a week later (happened about the exact same time last preg - but by then my baby had already gone as I found out at my scan a couple of weeks later). I have already had a scan at 9w, which showed a heartbeat and healthy baby - last time my bub had died at 8w5d.
Can anyone please reassure me that this is something that just happens? My m/s has eased too and my bbs aren't as sore (all this last time happened too). I'm a bit scared (and it doesn't help that DH just says I worry too much )

Given it's the same scenario, I would get checked out if it was me...good luck, hope it's nothing serious.

I had a sore tailbone occasionally during my first preg but it was after labour that it was horrifically sore. This time within weeks of getting preg I have had a very sore tailbone. I am now past the main risk of a miscarriage so I suggest dont get too hung up on it being associated with a miscarriage - hopefully this time everything goes smoothly for you, emachan. I spoke to my m/w last week bout it and she said that sometimes it just happens and I could get physio on it if it annoys me too much but otherwise I just have to put up with it.

It's hormones and probably posture - I've just been to a physio for the same issue and talked with my midwife about it. The hormones soften up the joints and if your posture isn't brilliant, it can be agonising. Get a referral to a maternity midwife - if anything, they can set your mind at ease; I also use a tubigrip around my waist/butt to help support things and make me more aware of it. Good luck!

Oh, that's interesting. I sprained my tailbone when I was 12 and the treatment for that took 6 years (they misdiagnosed) so I assumed it was just that pain coming back to haunt me.

I've had a seriously sore tailbone for the last two weeks - but then i sit at a desk all day and do a lot of driving on the weekends... I thought it was just something I had to put up with?? Not seeing my mw for another 3 weeks so how do i get a referral for extra help?

I would either ring your mw early or go to your doctor who could refer you to a physio. Its not worth putting up with the discomfort.

On a brighter note - my sore tailbone has cleared up! I have noticed that in the last week or so that it isnt painful anymore. Im guessing that it has to do with the uterus moving up higher into my abdomen. Will ask my specialist about it.
