    Posted: 14 September 2006 at 5:24pm
Can anyone tell me whether I should be concerned that Ben spills after almost every feed?
Sometimes its just a little, others it is heaps and others it is really thick and mucousy.
He doesn't often seem bothered by the spilling, although he is keen to get it out of his mouth after it has come up.
Also he seems to constantly have mucous in the back of his throat, which also doesn't seem to bother him.
Its just started being a regular thing in the last week or two, before that he'd only occasionaly spill.
TIA.

My friends boy had this and it was a type of reflux.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Is he is not bothered by it caraMEL it sounds like you have a happy chucker on your hands! Still, take him along for a visit to the Dr if you are greatly concerned about it!

Yer sounds like reflux ellas spills were mucusy and thick, the mucus never bothered her when it was in the back of her throat but when it came up it did and coz it was so thick it would come out her nose and she would gag for a bit and not breathe, very scary!

Ella started spilling like out of the blue and thats when i was like WTF? lol but shes good now only has the occasional spill. If your really concerned take him to the dr otherwise i highly recommend gaviscon infant. if he improves on this perhaps go to ur dr after a week on it or so and get a presciption for a whole lot for free . If u notice that he also spills when bringing up his wind try infacol that has stopped it happening to ella all she brings up now is her wind with an occasional "wet" burp

The gaviscon was great stuff, but its to be used with every feed otherwise it doesnt work (well it didnt for bailey which is why we ended up in hospital twice!!) I have a couple of packets here I can send you caramel so you can try, then once you run out you can get more on prescription... pm and letme know

Thankyou all so much for your responses esp Jess & Trish, they've been really helpful.
I didn't realise there were different kinds of reflux!
We have our 6 week check up next Tuesday so I'll ask the Dr about it then.
Am going on an infacol mission today and will see if Dr thinks gaviscon is a good idea.
Thanks again!

Hannah used to spill after every feed to - our carpet is covered in white spots! She also used to power chuck everywhere when she was in bed - never bothered her tho so never did anything about it. The midwives thought it was prob cos I had a lot of milk. The only time it bothered me was on a few occassions I would go and get her in the morning out of bed and her face would be covered in crusty milk and stuck through her eyelashes Oh and she always had it in her ears!! lol It will stop once they eat solids

Apparently most of spills are just saliva... so if it isn't bothering him too much and he's feeding properly, I'd not be too concerned. But good idea to mention it at your next appointment.

She was fully swaddled back then! lol Her bassinett was an old fashioned wood ones with vertical bars on the sides, and most mornings she had power chucked a good half a metre out of it!!

Yikes, you must have been doing so much washing Aimee!
I know my washing machine is busier than its ever been.
I just saw my plunket nurse and she said he's definitely reflux, and to expect him to get worse over the next couple of weeks, as that is when it usually shows.
I'm off to invest in some gaviscon to tide us over until Tuesday.

Hey there, How did you get on at the doctors? Is it reflux or colic?
