Topic: Starting solids - changes to milk feeds? Posted: 15 August 2010 at 9:33pm |
Hi ladies, my DD has just started solids a couple of days ago. She's been exclusively breastfed till now (6mths), with 5 feeds a day. I plan to cut out the 10pm dream feed shortly but am wondering whether I should be aiming to gradually phase-out breastmilk from her midday-ish and evening feeds?
Does anyone know what Plunket recommends about this? I'm happy to keep BFing 4 times a day for a few more months on top of solids if that's what's best for her, but I'm just not sure.
What have other mums done?
TIA

At this stage any solids are complimentary to milk feeds, they do not replace them. Milk feeds are still the no.1 form of nutrition.
So, do not cut down on any BF's yet, she will naturally start to do that later on down the track.

Yes MamaT is right you shouldn't be reducing milk at all at this stage as they are just taking food for exploration rather than nutrition. Feed baby BEFORE her solids and your other usual times.
At about 8mths you should be offering milk AFTER solids as opposed to before solids and you can start dropping night time feeds around that time too.

I just started offering solids before milk (at 8 months) and she's only just dropped down from 5 bottles to 3 1/2. Don't worry about it, it will happen naturally.

I was doing 5 feeds a day (though bottles rather than breastfeeding) and at around 7 months Cooper seemed less interested and we ended up on 4 bottles a day. It was a bit messy at first as he was stretching out the first 3 but still wanting 5 bottles so having them quite close together in the afternoon, but then those seemed to stretch out too and now we generally just do 4 bottles, and sometimes it seems like he's only wanting 3 now too.

At 12.5mos we still sometimes have a breastfeed before a meal or snack, other times food will come first - I leave it up to DD2 to let me know, as she has some quite clear signals, but I agree with MamaT & nathansmummy - don't look to cut down or change milk feeds just yet (your breastmilk will *always* be a wonderful source of nutrients for baby).

I'm still feeding on demand so Esme can have 3-5 feeds during the day. I don't worry about the milk before/sfter solids thing. We have times for breakfast/lunch/dinner (8am/12pm/6pm) and I feed around them (usually about an hour before/after) plus offer snacks if she looks like she wants one.
