    Posted: 05 October 2006 at 12:40pm
Ok so ever since I got past the "MC" stage I have been buying nappies and all the other baby stuff in the fortnightly shopping as Andrew doesn't need them now (YAY). Yesterday I found out I am having a boy and so can buy Huggies in the next sizes up. So I counted up what I have and I have about 300 newborn nappies, all different brands (I got a huggies box for cheap and had a $5 off voucher) and about 140 odd Infant size. A friend of mine came around yesterday and told me she thinks i've go a bit overboard buying so many nappies. I sorta sat there and told her I would rather be over stocked than understocked when we go down to one wage. Her husband also told she was silly for saying it as it is better to have too many than too few. Does anyone else think I am being silly buying all this stuff now? For those that are having or just had the second how much did you buy before bubs came along?

does that friend have kids? cause my mate did the same stocking up thing, and (pre-jake) i thought -seriously, is she planning to provide nappies ofr the entire neighbourhood? and then when I had Jake I remembered and though - oooohhhhh, now i get it.

To telkl the truth we didn't stock up for Taine, but mainly because we were coming back to NZ from japan and simply wouldn't have had room, but I did stock up on breast pads in japan as they were a ton cheaper and much better too.

Yeah she has 2 of her own and a step son. Which is why I found the comment funny. She stocked up with her second and when he was born had 14 months between the 2 of them and had 2 in nappies at the same time.

I've got 10 packs of newborn-sized nappies and wonder if I'll need more!  I'm not buying more though, as she mightn't fit them for long.  I don't think I can swap any of the ones I've already got for a larger size, as the brand has changed their packaging since I got them, and I've de-barcoded the 5 packs of Huggies.  Probably got about 4 packs of wipes (like 80 or so in a pack, not the giant refill ones!).  It's hard to know what to get when you don't know what brands you'll like the most or whether or not baby will react to anything... but this is your second baby, so I'd say you'll already know what brands work and which ones don't, so you'll be sweet as, going with your instincts!

I say go for gold - like you say you are going down to one income, and its better to have too many rather than not enough.
We have brought 5 new born nappies and we have just ordered 2 boxes from baby online, we are using cloth aswell, we have several shampoos and creams for bubs also.
I have really ejoyed buying all the bits n pieces, I even have cotton balls and cotton buds, toothpaste, what else have I got, bonjella, sunscreen hahaha.
Do what you feel is right.

I suppose if you find out latter that you have stocked up too much on the nappies you could always try to sell them later on trademe and get some of your money back. I'm doing the same thing stocking up on stuff now why I can and as this is my first time around it is hard to know how much your going to need and what your going to need.
Better too much then not enough

I think its a good idea! We havent got that many nappies,..well the wardrobe is full,..but dont think they will actually last long,..but as soon as they run out we are planning on using Fuzzi's.
I have stocked up on other stuff tho. We have got into a good routinue in last few months of buying a spare of everything we regularly use, in advance - shampoo, loo paper, gladwrap, detergent, some canned food etc etc so that there is one there when we run out encase we cant get to the shops.Much more organise than we were!
Have started looking for stuff on sale and buying in bulk,..like a BIG 10kg persil that was on sale at Bunnings, soap etc.

I think it is a brilliant idea stocking up. Buying nappies each week costs a fortune, so even if you still have to fork out when the babe is here, if you are running short on money one week then atleast you know you can save yourself $20 by not having to purchase a weeks worth of nappies.

Kellz, I might have to do the pantry and other rooms stocking as well. I'm going to start looking at everything on special for the next few months and stock up now. I'll have to find some space to store it all while DH is busy making babies room.

We went through 100 newborn huggies in just under 3 weeks. (averaged about 7 nappy changes per 24 hours)
Ben is an average sized baby and went up into infant size at about 6 weeks, so going by my experience you will be using the stockpile!
Your friend must have forgotten how regularly newborn bubs explode, we've been spending a fortune on nappies!

I'm going to start on nappies soon, I have 2 packets left from when Jake was a baby, but I usually have heaps of wipes etc, and still have 3 powders and 3 moisturisers from then as well (god knows how much of that stuff I thought I was going to need! lol!)I will be doing some big grocery shops before baby arrives, so I don't have to get out too soon, although I will go out for fruit and milk. (we have a huge vege garden. My pantry is usually very well stocked anyhow,as I am a bit obsessive compulsive and worry about earthquake/flood/birdflu/plague/war/supermarket strikes.. (just check out my vague ramblings on the something random about you thread...) and I buy persil at mitre 10 on hubbys account, the big ones, so they last aaaaages, and I don't personally pay for it!
Good idea, though, as a saving of even $20 a week is huge when you are down to one wage. And even better if you also have a wedding to pay for and a swimming pool going in not long after!

I've got 9 packs of newborn, plus we get a box of Huggies from the multiple birth club, and I've bought 4 packs of Infant size as well as once they outgrow the newborns they'll be in cloths during the day. Also have a stockpile of wipes, breastpads and maternity pads, plus Huggies gave me a pile of change mats and their new wash cloths which is nice (perks of the job )

Nah, she's being silly. It's awesome how you are stocking up. At least you are smart enough to do it now!

I didnt stock up on nappies (only bought a couple of packs) but did with other stuff like bath wash, shampoo etc and ended up giving it ALL to friends cos Hannah got eczema from everything. So its all good to stock up, but sometimes you end up losing money too...

We stocked up on Nappies for our first born but we ended up buying to many newborns and the supermarkets wouldn't swap them unless we had the receipts. We also got a range of Nappies and found the the Giggles weren't any good for newborns but the Ultras were...so we used the giggles during the day to use them up and Ultras at night. We also got a range of baby wipes and off all of them (and I'm a real Treasuers chick) found the Pams Cherish baby wipes to be the best and most moist. They're cheap and the travel pack size is really good.

Our kids were on Formula. When I was at the baby show in Wellington Karicare were selling the 6mt plus stuff for 3 x tins $40.00..normally $20 per tin at the supermaket so needless to say I bought enough tins to see Alex through till he was 12 months. My pram was really weighted down and best of all the lady at the counter sold them to me for 3 x $30...even when I told her that I didn't think that was correct. That saved me $100!

I'm a first time mum and I'm not planning on stock piling too much - I mean sure we'll be down to one income once baby comes out but if we don't spend the money now we'll still have it then. I personally fear the what if... - what if baby does not like the brand of nappies/lotions etc I've stocked, what if it grows too quickly and gets too big to use up nappies & clothes? I'm too confused so I'm playing it safe - only time will show if I'll wish I had bought more
By the way, what is considered a good price for nappies - I'm thinking of getting some when they are on special

We purposly didnt stock pile baby products cos we dont know what will suit us/ bubs, and thats why we got supplies of other stuff that we normally use,..now we are much more organised! Have a spare of all our cleaning products, and most stuff thats non-perishable that we regularly use! Also I remember someone ages ago (cant remember what topic) suggested buying a spare of your mosituriser, and other beauty stuff,..(I love eyemakeup remover wipes!!),.. while u still on 2 incomes. I already feel a bit guilty buying this stuff that isnt essential.

One thikg I haven't stockpiled this time is lotions and potions coz like Aimeejoy, Maya has bad eczema so the twins are likely to as well. I used the new HUggies Sensitive in Maya's bath so will just use that for the babies and see how we go.

Plus I still have a full bottle of baby lotion from when Maya was born that I never even used

I also found with the lotions etc, you really don't use much in the first while anyway cos their skin is so sensitive, and when you do it's only al ittle. I'd say the biggest thing for us is powder for bottoms, cos we go thru that quick.. And also shampoo for Paris.. cos she has so much hair that we need to use a good amount, plus she gets all sorts of stuff in it at daycare. yesterday it was playdough set and dried in her hair and lots of it.

Stockingup.. first time we did a little, and wished we had done more, we always thought that we would just save the money to use but it didn't happen, but by buying something each week instead at least we had it, and just kept recipts. Wipes we got given heaps of tubs of those, but used flannels from the start..and still do, only took wipes in the car for just in case and travelling.. so they lasted ages too.

For Ayja we got lots of nappies and lots of breastpads and heaps of maternity pads too considering i needed them for 6 weeks the first time (and about that the second time too). I didn't buy too many of the newborn size because i remember Paris growing out of them after a little while (probably took longer than most though cos she was a slow grower).. but ended up buying more newbie size ones cos Ayja fitted them for ages, till she had a growth spurt.. and unbelieveably, there was a few months for a while there that both girls fitted the same size medium nappies. I thought that was great!

I did stock up on my stuff second time though - things like extra moisturiser and shower gel and shampoo and make-up.. cos that's what i found was the first thing to cut back on when we had Paris since we had very little money.. I really had to kinda choose when i was going to wear make-up and look and feel good about myself, lol (not saying i need make up to feel ok, but it helps) My mum also knows what products i use, so when it comes to birthdays and xmas etc. she usually buys me a big gift pack with the face wash and moisturiser and shower gel in too.. and that's helpful.
