Hello, I think I'm going to answer this question myself, but just need some reassurance from you other OB mummies!

My 10 wk old DD has suddenly started having 'power feeds' - sometimes as little as 5 mins per feed (taking only one breast), she does still have about one 'good' (longer) feed a day. She is on a routine (3 hrs feeds) and does not seem to be hanging out for a feed between feeds. She has plenty of wet and dirty nappies. BUT this just seems too quick. My milk does seem to quickly (like on the first or second suck), but I am worried she's not feeding for long enough. This has been happening for about a week.

When I offer her more, she jsut turns her head away and wiggles. Even after a burp and a 10 min break she's not keen on anymore...

Is this just my new mummy brain worrying about nothing?? Anyone had this happen? Or is this just normal?

Lauren was a really quick feeder from early on, and would also only take one side. My MW said that I shouldn't worry and that she probably just had a little tummy and couldn't fit more in. Mind you, she was also a very frequent feeder (once an hour when she was having a growth spurt and between 2-3 hours when she wasn't). If she really doesn't seem to want anymore, and isn't uncomfortable, doesn't seem hungry between feeds etc then personally I wouldn't worry too much - every baby is different!

DD has never fed for longer than 10mins (even as a new-born) although I have always cue-fed her, so could be anywhere between half an hour-4 hours between feeds. Even now she never feeds for longer than 5mins (that would be her longest feed)

I personally didn't worry with the length of time of feeding, because I figured she would request more if she wanted it.

If she doesn't want anymore than I'd say it is perfectly normal. If her nappies are dirty/wet, gaining weight and she is a happy content baby then she'll be getting enough.

By about that age Jake was only taking 5 or so mins too, he was also a one boob feeder, and would go at least 2.5 hours between feeds. I wouldn't worry about it, she may just be very efficient at getting the milk out. He could do both boobs in less than 5 mins by 6 months old! Morgan was a one boob feeder too til about 3 or so months (I think Jake didn't take both til at least 4 months at most feeds), and she still only has one boob first thing in the morning. She doesn't take much longer than Jake did to feed too, maybe 10mins.

My little girl is really fast too, averages 10 minutes or less right from birth. She's a big girl too, 9 pounder at birth, and has gained tons of weight right from the get go so I figure it must be combination of a good supply from me and being very efficient at feeding - you'll be the same.

As long as she's still growing and gaining weight there is no cause for concern.

hehe, my second was over 9lbs too - she had a good suck on her from day 1! haha. and Jake was a sick bub (heart defect) so had to gain more weight than normal/wk (300g for a while there at about 2 months) and still fed in 5mins at that age. I thought it was great! didn't have time to sit there for 20-30mins!! And Morgan feeds in a few mins now that shes older, great with Jake waiting around getting bored or into trouble!

*raises hand* I have a super fast feeder too. If the milk ain't there, he ain't sticking around. He's not quite 6 months and can empty both boobs in 4 minutes sometimes. Once he has to work for it - he's outta there. And I don't do formula top ups and he's gaining weight so must be getting enough. (He would eat more, don't get me wrong - but he's just greedy like that )

The only time Jackson feeds longer than 5 minutes is after his bath before bed, and thats been since birth. He's never fed longer than 15 minutes max with his normal day feeds of 5 minutes per boob. I had MW's and nurses telling me I needed to feed for 30 minutes per feed!!! Anyways, Im sure she would let you know if she is hungry. Put it down to an efficient feeder

So jealous of some of you ladies!

My Brooke took 45-60 mins a feed (every four hrs).  I called her a 'gourmet' eater.

To answer the question - so long as your baby has plenty of wet/dirty nappies and is obviously well hydrated and putting on weight at a reasonable rate, then I think everything should be fine.

Cooper has just started doing really quick feeds the last couple of days too. Was starting to get a bit paranoid as he was previously feeding for about 20min, now its down to about 10min max.

He is pooing just once or twice a day now too but still has plenty of wet nappys and gained 500g this week and 400g the previous week.

My boobs always feel empty after a feed so guess he must be getting enough
