Topic: Taking Aspirin while TTC Posted: 19 August 2011 at 10:29pm |
Hi
Just wanting to know what those of you who have had one or more MC's have been told about aspirin. I went to FA after 2x missed MC in 12 months as didn't want to wait for 3 before having the recurrent MC tests. The specialist put me on high dose folic acid and aspirin even though tests for clotting disorders and antiphospholipid syndrome came back normal as there is emperical evidence supporting their use to prevent further MC's. I was happy with that but a few people recently have questioned why I'm taking aspiring while still TTC and not just when I get a BFP. Has anyone got any suggestions or information on that? Should I keep taking it while TTC or wait till I get my BFP?
Many thanks

Hi Atiamuri. I have been taking low dose aspirin for about 4 months while trying to conceive our next pregnancy. My blood tests for clotting etc also came back normal. Our specialist said to keep taking it anyway as it can't hurt. I am not taking high dose folic acid though, maybe I should be asking about that as I am just taking Elevit?!
We are almost cycle buddies, I have a blood test in 6 days (14dpo) to see if I am pregnant. I am using progesterone pessaries through the luteal phase, so my period won't show up until I stop them.
Good luck, I hope that things work out for you and you get your sticky baby soon

Wow Janie, quite a journey you've been on. So sorry for your losses...
I'm pleased someone else has been told to take it while TTC, I was worried I'd misheard the specialist - so much information to take in in one go! Can I get it from the pharmacy/supermarket or is it prescription only (I only have 1 tab left!)
Regarding the folic acid, its 5mg rather than 0.8mg and supposedly it increases the chance of it being absorbed if you have difficulties absorbing folic acid (my brother has that problem, missing an enzyme or something) so its another one of those 'no harm to take' type things. Saying that maybe its worth asking about? I'm not taking elevit, specialist said not to worry with the high dose folic acid. I've got progresterone supps waiting in the wings when I get my BFP if progesterone on first blood test is less than 60.
Just out of interest, I'm also having accupuncture to help with hormones, endometrial lining and luteal phase.
Thanks so much for replying, good to know I'm on track. Good luck for your blood test in 6 days, fingers crossed we'll be due date buddies too!

I've had 6 pregnancies (mostly missed mc's with one being a visible fetus on my 12 week scan, alas deceased at 10 weeks). I had been taking aspirin and high dose folic for the best part of those pregnancies, and eventually 'graduated' to Heparin (all on advice from Repromed) which consisted of twice daily injections. Personally I think it's on an individual basis and from what I have read extensively, it cannot hurt to use it. If you start to get excessive nosebleeds then you may need to talk to your doctor about decreasing the dosage (this happened to me on the heparin). Good luck, my heart goes out to all of you in this thread as we do end up clutching at straws BUT sometimes those straws need clutching at to get what we all want and deserve xxx
A really good book to read is 'Is Your Body Baby Friendly' by Dr Alan Beer. It can open up a few new doors, ie MTHFR and NKC's (natural killer cells) but talks a lot about heparin, aspirin, folic acid, and can also guide you into looking deeper into your own nutrition and lifestyle, things you would never ever consider could make a difference.
Still, I am still waiting for a full-term pregnancy to evolve, so the jury is still out there for me. *sigh*
I used to say I had had '6 miscarriages' but now I call them 'pregnancies' because after four years of trying with natural pregnancies, IUI pregnancies, and IVF attempts, the problem lies with implantation for me. I get the BFP's, but no implantation, so therefore I get missed m'cs, or blighted ovums. So many terminologies huh...

Thanks MaeBeeBaby, thank you for sharing your story too. So sorry for your losses and I hope this next one is a sticky one for you after such a difficult journey.
I picked up the same 100mg aspirin I'd been prescribed in the supermarket yesterday to tie me over (hopefully to my FP this week and a GP appointment!!)
I was investigated for MTHFR as well which came up negative. It is really interesting all of the things that can influence our fertility and so much of it (unfortunately) is out of our control and medicine is not developed enough to detect about 60% of it.
I've had no side-effects from the aspirin and feel quite happy continuing to take it.
Good luck to the two of you for your BFP's this week - hopefully we'll be three joining the due in May thread

I have lost two pregnancies and started taking 75mg asprin daily while TTC, and continue to do so now... I just have to stop a few weeks before due date...
I just got mine from the supermarket.
Also, my blood work was normal too.

Another aspirin believer here, My tests all came back normal as well after my losses, but 2 obstetricians said "why not give it a go" next time. I took 75 mg until about 10 weeks then changed to 50mg (half a 100mg tablet) and here I am.
Even if it's a placebo affect, so far so good
Fingers crossed.
Looking forward to your BFP xx

Thanks PB, I'm a big believer in the placebo effect! I'm doing so many 'placebo' treatments at the moment (charting, acupuncture, high dose folic acid, aspirin and progesterone up my sleeve if I need it when I do get UTD) that I'm feeling the most calm, in control and ready for a successful pregnancy since we started trying. It has to be a good thing.
So excited you've made it so far, hopefully I'll join you soon. Hope DH is coping with his treatment well.

Definitely sounds like you are on the right track! I took elevit and the 0.8 from the docs so had a double dose of FA, and I tried acupuncture once but I was too scared to go back ( ha ha I'm such a wimp!). I got some progesterone from FA but then found out that as I'm allergic to peanuts can't take it, pm me your address if you want me to post it to you - it's the urogestan brand :)
Df will be half way through his treatment at the end of this week, he's handled it amazingly well, no one would know to look at him. Still working quite a bit, no sickness, just some weird side effects like tingly hands and mood swings he's been really lucky. Thanks for thinking of him hun xx

Good on him. Must be so much easier for you knowing he's coping with it ok. Sounds like a lucky man!
So I'm going to think positive here... when I get my BFP this week and have my first blood test, if progesterone levels are 60 or under I'll PM you for it. Thanks so much for the offer! Is there different strengths/dosages or are they all the same? I went to FA in Hamilton so good chance it might be what they had in mind for me... if I need it...
I might be a saddist but I really enjoy the acupuncture!

Yes it has been a journey and a half for us, but we are incredibly lucky to have been blessed with our little girl. I am starting to think of her as our wee miracle. I cannot imagine how hard it is for those who suffer multiple loss before having a successful pregnancy. We had one miscarriage before Abigail, and bleed up to about 9 weeks with her, so have never been able to enjoy early pregnancy
Just another note on the aspirin, I was taking it with my last 2 pregnancies which obviously didn't work out so I don't think it helps with my problem (whatever that is), but the specialist said to keep taking it. It makes me feel better and like I'm doing something, so yep another believer in the placebo effect here
When are you going to test Atiamuri? My blood test is on Friday but I think I will do a HPT before getting the results, either on Friday or maybe even earlier. I think I would prefer having an idea of the outcome before the nurse calls!
I have high hopes for this cycle. We did OI (ovulation induction), which is like an IUI cycle but without the insemination part, we just got told when to do our 'homework' lol. So fingers crossed we will both be joining the May 11 thread :)

Just want to say sorry to all those who have lost their babies :(
I'm a believer in aspirin and progesterone. I went to FA after my 3rd mc and he suggested taking aspirin while TTC (can't do any harm he said) then take progestesterone when I got my BFP which I did and the next cycle sticked and as a result I have my little miracle :)
I'll never know if it was these things that helped or that my son just stayed on by himself, but I think next time I'll do the same thing.
Good Luck!!

I take low dose aspirin while TTC as my doc said it couldn't hurt and I will give anything a go! The tricky thing for me is that it's now been 8 months since my mc and still no BFP so it's hard-going, especially because I'm always going to be worried that another BFP could end in miscarriage.
