Topic: The old constipation issue.... Posted: 08 May 2011 at 9:20am |
Have this week started DS2 on solids, and as I know if frequently normal, he has become a bit constipated.
Last night I had to hold his little legs up while he squeezed out a poo, and he was crying so hard and looked so miserable. He also wouldn't breastfeed, I guess because the poo reflex was working and it hurt him.
How long does it normally take for their guts to figure it out and start processing better?
And if I give some prune juice and/or sugar water, what sort of quantity do I need to do?
My first boy wasn't on solids till he was over a year old (long story) so this is completely new to me!

Worst culprit is puree apple and pear. My DD was fine as we did BLW and have never had consitpation issues. I think you give about a teaspoon of sugar to a cup of water, then only a teaspoon of that mix, but not 100% on that. Good luck

I had the same issue with DD when we started solids so put some prune june (5ml I think from memory) into her solids and it seemed to work well.
Also try upping his water intake, or give him some diluted prune juice (5ml pj in 100ml water).
You can also get an apple and prune watties baby food that a friend of mine used and that worked well too.
Good luck

Thanks guys. When I dilute the prune juice, how much do you then give?
Does anyone have a list of the most common constipating foods? My boy has always had slow bowel movements at the best of times, so I suspect this is going to be a bit of an issue for us. His nappies are still sodden so I am sure he's getting enough milk still.

Diluted prune juice - give no more than 100ml of the solution a day (i think, that was from plunketline so give them a call if you want to make sure).
Baby rice is one of the worst for contipation as its so iron rich. Also I think apple can be bad if not mixed with prune juice. Pear is one of the better fruits to give (again, all from plunketline)
Took my DD over a week to be fully unclogged and back to normal after doing all of those things.
Hope that helps

Bananas and apples are terrible for constipation. Pears are great.
I used to get dried prunes, cover in boiling water and give DS the juice when it cooled, it was only ever about 5ml and always sorted him out within a day.
Good luck

Yea, pears are great, Jacob gets nastily constipated and I keep him on pears by the bucketload to keep it under control. I just mix a splash of prune juice with them when he gets particularly bad.
Jacob only had one little poo in 18 days after we started solids... even then the Drs weren't too worried, they just gave us some meds to get things moving.
For us, banana and kumera are the worst - although he can handle a bit of them now. Apparently apple's bad too (lots of pectin).

Depends on the baby! You name it (even apple and prune), it will clog DS up. We tried brown sugar and water (1tsp sugar to 50ml water) and it did nothing.
We have had to give him coloxyl drops and at one point, had to do an enema after 17 days of nothing. Most unpleasant.
You want to do the opposite of the BRAT diet which is used for diarrhoea (banana, rice, apple, toast).

Yes it does, DD took 6 days to go poo the first week she went on solids I tried everything prune juice, sugar water and it all had to wait.
I make sure she has water with every meal and I limit foods that are binding and/or I have combine them with foods that aren't.
Worst culprits are - bananas, apple puree and kumara.
Foods that aren't - pumpkin, pears and prunes.
DD loves prune juice I made my own by pouring boiling water on to prunes and leaving to steep till cold. Drain and use the juice and I mushed up the prunes and put them with apple.
I limit banana to once a week, and I put pear with apple and pumpkin with kumara.
I've never bothered with baby rice was told to steer clear of it by a naturopath. We went straight on to porridge after 3 weeks of solids.

I found when DD first started really getting into solids (we did BLW so it was all her anyway) she was eating too much for her little tummy to handle and got constipated. We cut back for a week to let her recover and then controlled how much she ate and built her up a little more slowly, we havnt had a problem since!

I have to disagree on the pear front, at least in our experience...pears the first food DS had and they've been the one thing that's helped keep him moving from day 1...

Bad for us was bananas and kumara. Pears were great for getting things moving!
The only thing that helps DS long term is lots of water. Esp if your little one isn't pooping, the longer the poop is inside the more moisture is sucked out by the body, so they need to drink more.

banana's are the worst/
Diluted prune juice works but i found that a very little bit of kiwifruit or fejoa works well to mixed in with other food.

Interesting then that all the suggested first foods are constipating!!
Oh well, will keep offering the water and a little prune juice and hope for the best. Just don't want to see him in pain like last night. Luckily today we have had two more poos which haven't been as bad.

Their little bodies aren't used to the fibre it doesn't take long for them to adjust. Within a couple of weeks DD was back to her regular habits.

I have used baby magic tea for my constipated baby and got good results. He's now having bowel movement once a day and he can easily poop.
