Ok so I have read SO much conflicting stuff on different sites- so whats your opinion?
I've heard I shouldn't eat it because raw egg yolk is used to make it..... BUT I've read a lot of stuff about how thats only home made stuff... The shop bought stuff "has" to be heat treated before it can be sold...
So if it was shop bought stuff, it'd be heat treated, right?

So why can't I still eat it? Or is it out-of-date info now its meant to be heat treated (or is the heat treated thing a load of sh!t?)

I wondered about this too and rang my midwife and they told me that all mayo store brought is head-treated and as long as its kept in fridge its ok to eat. I knew that mcdonalds mayo was ok to eat as a manager looked it up for me and told me it was heat treated.
Only home-made has real raw egg in it.
Been eating McD since around 12 weeks and mayo in the last trimester. Enjoy it hun!!

I eat it, end of story.
All store bought mayo is indeed heat treated (unless you're getting it fresh from a Deli) so you should be fine! I have it on all my takeaways tbh.

Store-brought stuff is heat treated and should be fine. Same with maccas mayo, and other burger chains like that.
I would steer clear of mayo that is made fresh in restaurants etc. though because it is made with raw egg.

Raw egg has the risk of salmonella in it which is why you shouldn't eat fresh made mayonaise. Store bought should be fine if you read the ingredients list on the back you may find some of them don't even use real egg they use powdered egg and its all heat treated. You could always switch to a vingarette - olive oil, vinegar, salt & pepper. |

Good on ya Hunnybunny for wanting to just be extra safe.........nothing worse than playing russian roulette with your babies health by ignoring the warnings that have obviously been given to us for good reason and not cos they want to make our pregnancies more miserable

But yes indeed all store bought mayo is ok cos its heat treated.......so if it has a seal on it you should be good to go. I accidentally (i completely forgot) asked for a bernaise sauce from Hogs breath and was most of the way through it when i remembered it probably had egg in it and sure enough it did......but im sure i will be fine, its probably the more often you eat raw egg the higher your chances of getting one with listeria.........well a lot higher than if you dont eat raw egg at all

Can i recommend Best foods Mayo.........hmmmm deeevinneeee

Feel free to ask about other products that seem to be unsure IE: camembert or brie are ok cos they are pasterised. Of course your always gonna get those who say "eat what ever you like, I did" but if you dont want to put your babies health at risk and are happy to put your own desires aside for 9months (not long really when you think it could mean the difference between them being healthy or a lifetime of problems or even death) there are plenty of people that will give you the correct SAFE advise and steer you in the right direction

Have a happy and healthy pregnancy

Thanks for the advice ladies... I'm generally pretty cruisy- but the raw egg thing really got to me I know how nasty raw egg can be!!!
I never got a bounty pack so don't even know whats in it.. I haven't had my first meeting with my midwife though, so will I get it then?
I like mayo cos I make a MEAN potato salad with pams salad dressing sounds yuck but I ALWAYS get complimented on it, and I'm always told to bring that as our plate hehe. AND its easy... Dunno if I could have coped going through summer without my potato salad!! MMmm yummy

Yeah, it would get to me, too HB. I don't eat mayo (just not a fan) but if I did, I'd make my own as I don't eat battery eggs / chicken.

I don't eat battery eggs... We always get free range, and a lot of the time I support a local lady where I've actually seen the chickens (they live in a paddock and she spends like a hour walking around the padock all their little wholes to find the eggs LOL) means the eggs aren't clean on the outside and you gotta crack them into glass first but its worth it!
But I gotta admit, I get normal tegal chickens... Which makes me feel terrible, but there is NEVER free range chickens at our supermarket (i have bought them when they were there!) and I looove chicken...
Whee. What a wee novel about nothing really |

I'll see your Best Foods mayo and your Heinz Seriously Good Mayo and I'll raise you a Japanese mayo. The one from the "exotic food" aisle with the clear plastic bottle with the baby on and the red lid. I don't even like mayo and I this stuff |

Yeah I think you got it right on the button. Home-made stuff should be avoided cause it's usually made with raw egg, store bought stuff is usually bulk made and for public sale so has to be heat treated. It's like a lot of stuff though. Like soft cheeses are supposed to be a no-go. BUT if it's made in New Zealand it's ok to eat cause the milk to make it HAS to be pasturised by NZ Law.   I've eaten pretty much everything though. I have avoided sushi, smoked chicken, seafood and bakery sandwiches that are made with cold chicken. But otherwise I've been a garbage disposal unit. |
