Topic: Those that do frozen meals Posted: 30 January 2009 at 10:25am |
What sort of things do you make? And do you just double the receipe and when its cold put it in the freezor?
When you bring it out of the freezor do you just put it in the microwave?
Im new to this freezing foods stuff and REALLY want to get into it because Im out so much during the week!
Thanks for your help

We use our slow cooker which means we make 2-3 times more than we need and then freeze the rest.
We put it in the microwave (with the lid partially off) for about 5 minutes on high initially and then assess how warm it is and keep heating from there.
Chilli con carne is a good one because you can have it on its own or use it for burritos, tacos etc.
Also anything that you would put on rice because then you just make rice and steam some veges.

We freeze pretty much everything because we usually make up two meals and put one in the freezer for when we can't be bothered cooking. Works so well when both of you are working - until you run out of space in the freezer!
We don't have a microwave but usually thaw it out in the fridge during the day and then either put it in the oven or in a pot on the stove depending what it is.

I use those glad containers, and freeze enough for DH and I, our microwave has a heat from frozen function. Or I take them out the night before and put in the fridge.
Mostly do mince based meals, as they seem to re-heat well. Add pasta or rice to them.

I make vego pasta sauce for me then add mince to it for DH. I make a huge batch then just have to cook the pasta. It's a good way of getting vegetables into the diet when you're too tired and the takeaway shop is so tempting. I just soften it in the m/wave then chuck it in a saucepan just like I was heating one from a jar (which I hate with a passion).

I usually make lasagne and freeze it. I buy the little metal/aluminium loaf tins from the supermarket and make up 3 at a time, one for tea and 2 to freeze. I just take it out of the freezer, chop it in 3 and heat through in the microwave

You can definitely freeze cooked pasta or rice, they just go a bit funny if they have no sauce or water on them when you reheat them. I wouldn't ever freeze them on their own, they would have to be as part of a meal.
I freeze everything, pasta and mince meals, stir fries, bacon and egg pie, soup...
And yep I just make up a double or triple batch and freeze what we don't eat. I freeze one half in pieces big enough for us, and one half into pieces big enough for Jack. That way there's no wastage.

A friend often freezes mince that she has cooked in a tomato sauce. Then she just adds pasta or potatoes or whatever else she feels like that night. I used to make and freeze macaroni cheese for Jack, I suppose you could do that as well.

So excited about being able to do this when we finally set up house in 2weeks Hehe. SOrry no help though

I freeze things like Devilled Sausages or Curry Sausages, Lasagne, Chicken soup etc.
DH is a bit of a nazi though with the food in the freezer and wants everything eaten asap so sometimes it's not worth it.
Once I go on Maternity leave I plan to make some freezable meals for when the baby comes and we can't be bothered cooking.

LOL we were just talking about this in the Feb 09 thread today.
In my freezer I've got tomato/mince sauce (usually use it as pasta sauce), beef casserole, pork, apple & prune casserole, a couple of different homemade soups and spiced apples. All those meals I make from recipes that serve 4 or 6 and freeze the extra portions. We also freeze FRESH pasta and I buy chicken breasts, lamb chops, mince, chicken pieces and freeze in lots big enough for DH and I so I can take them out in the morning and cook something quick at night. Then all I need to do really is make a salad or steam some veg. Yum.
Tonight we're having frozen pizza though
