Topic: Thoughts on positive hpt after m/c Posted: 10 May 2009 at 11:45am |
Hi All
I just wanted your thoughts on my situation, below is a bit of a background.
I m/c'd after 6 weeks (04/04) I didn't have a d&c as I was overseas and a little bit nervous to go when I wasn't near to my own doctor. However all was passed by 11/04 and bleeding stopped. Approx 2 weeks later I took a hpt with a negative result which is what we wanted as we wanted to make sure everything had passed. The signs and symptoms had left by this stage and I no longer 'felt pregnant'
We were obviously very keen to try again but wanted to wait until my next af so as we could get back to normal before ttc again. Anyway, things didn't quite work out that way and last week after still no sign of af, I had some symptoms that I thought might be pregnancy signs, I took a hpt which came up with a faint positive.
I haven't taken another hpt since but have been getting sore boobs and have been peeing a lot!! (sorry, tmi)
My question is, do you think this could still be signs of the old pregnancy or do you think it may be a new pregnancy? I know, I should go to my doctor and get tested but before I can make an appt I wanted to get your opinions.
I'd appreciate any advice and sorry for the long post!

Id say much more likely to be a new pregnancy if you got BFN end of april.... Id do another hpt and see if it's darker...

I'd say that its a positive for a new pregnancy. A line is a line no matter how dark, it just depends on how the dye reacts with your sample. I'd go to your Dr and ask for a blood test just to be sure and even an early scan too to reassure that all is ok.
Good Luck

Thanks ladies!! I should mention that in my last pregnancy the line was really really faint for a week or two before I went to the Dr to get bloods done.

Hi MrsEmma, I would say it is totally possible. Last year I had a natural miscarriage and then conceived again with no af inbetween, so it is definately possible. And it is sounding very likely for you, but I would go get bloods done to confirm. Goodluck

Emma, it sounds like you are pg to me. You can ask your dr for an early scan to confirm your dates, since your cycle would have been a little wonky lately.

I'd say its a legit BFP. You've had a negative which indicates all the HCG levels went back to normal so this latest test sounds like a proper positive.
Try another of the same brand tomorrow morning and see if its darker.
Also - ask the drs for some HCG blood tests and an early scan - believe me falling pregnant straight after a MC does your head in and having some signs that all is going ok in there is a life saver.
I had a natural MC in Dec and fell pregnant straight away.

Thanks so much everyone for your advice.
We want so much for this to be a new pregnancy, but after last time are so scared to be excited just in case it's not a real BFP or I m/c again which I don't even want to think about.
For this reason, DH has asked me to wait 2 weeks in between hpt's so we would get a more accurate result.. so I'll test again on Friday this week. If it's a BFP I'll make an appointment next week to get tests and scans as you all suggest.
Thanks again, fingers crossed!

Hey MrsEmma,
I might be in the same situation as you.
I got a really faint (barely there) BFP tonight & am wondering if it could be a fasle +ve.
My sister said she had 1 a month after her m/c as well as the reappreance of her preg symptoms even though she wasn't preg, I am also having all of my symptoms again, but am thinking it is just my body playing tricks on me.
I suppose I have no choice but to wait a few days & then test again

MrsEmma and Na_#1 - wow, fingers crossed for both of you!
As you know Na I had a m/c about four weeks ago also. I had a very definite negative HPT last Thursday and AF arrived on Sunday so hopefully your positives are positives!! Keep us posted

Thanks Millyz - I really don't know what to think.
I did another test this morning & the same thing happened, the line was ever so slightly darker then yesterday arvo, but I am still sceptical about it.
Surely it is too good to be true

Hmmm, that is certainly sounded very promising Na_#1. Did you get bloods done after your m/c? I got some done a couple of days after and it showed that my HCG levels had dropped right down.
If so it might be worth getting a set of bloods done to see what level your HCG is at now? Or get some done now and then in a couple of days to see if there's any upward movement.
Oooh how exciting, fx!!

I had bloods done 2 days in a row at time of m/c & it showed my HCG levels going down very rapidly.
I really just don't know what to think
If it is just my body playing up with the nausea etc & a +ve HPT then it is a very horrible trick

That would be a horrible trick Na_#1
Depending on how mad its driving you I'd pop along to the doctor for some answers - especially if AF hasn't arrived by Thursday. Last thing you'd want to have bloods done on Friday and then not get answers till Monday, arghhhhh!! I couldn't stand it!!

Lurker in - Na_#1, that definately sounds like a BFP, huge congratulations!!! I can understand being cautious though, but I seriously doubt a month or so after a miscarriage your levels would be high enough to show on a pregnancy test, especially if they dropped straight after your miscarriage.
All the very best MrsEmma and Na_#1! Hopefully you'll both be posting in the due on Jan 2010 thread soon.

Hi All
Na_#1 I really hope my body isn't playing tricks on me, I would be absolutely devastated. It's so frustrating all the waiting and not knowing, it's enough to drive you insane. All the very best for your results, please keep us posted.
Doing a hpt got the better of me and I've just bought and done one - it was a really dark positive so we are VERY happy!! I'm going to book into the doctor this week and see what they have to say but I'm super excited!! YAY!

Yay Emma, thats fantastic
Congrats hun!!!!!!!!!
I think the BFP boom is happening again by the looks of the two week wait & Jan 2010 threads.
I think I might wait a few more days before testing again, my AF is due tomorrow but my temp went up again this morning .....fluke?????? who knows.
I think I may just play the waiting game, still feel very blah too.
