Okay so I finally got around to listing all my excess stuff on TradeMe, but I haven't really sold anything before.
All I have listed so far is clothes, I wondered how to post them? Like, do I buy the NZ post bags and send in them or is it cheaper to send in my own box (can I do that?) or other packaging??
I am so clueless

Maybe wrap them in a plastic bag then brown paper? I've gotten stuff wrapped like that before.

Yeah I'd personally wrap it up like babe said (in a plastic bag first, then the brown paper on top). If it's a smaller parcel you can always see if the pre-paid bags work out cheaper too.. I wouldn't use a box for clothing because it will probably just take the weight up and cost a bit more..

Yup they sell a roll of brown paper (lasts AGES if its just for items like clothes etc) ...it's usually around the $4-$5 mark.
I think it's called Handipaper or something. Its with all the packaging, postage bags etc.

Do you have to use the stuff from the post shop?? I have a big roll Keira sometimes does paintings on from the $2 shop. Its quite think, I doubt you could tell the difference.

If you look at this page Parcel Post it gives you the dimensions for packaging.
I usually, depending on the size, I wash & then put into the smelly nappy bags & then wrap in brown paper. I work out the packaging via how much of the brown paper I use.
I don't wrap until I know what that particular person is buying incase they combine auctions.
Must look into the brown paper at the $2 shop, might be cheaper.
What really pisses me off is if someone over charges for packaging. I try to be as fair & as cheap as possible.

Daizy I think you can use anything, within reason. I've used computer paper (lots of sheets) before lol.
As long as its completely sealed in, and labelled properly I think it'll be fine

Aliasmum - I so agree re: being overcharged! But its even worse when you work out an estimate on what to charge for postage for your auction, or you get a quote from the post shop ...and then when the item is sold and you go to post it, they tell you its some extravagant amount, and much more expensive than what you were originally told/charged the person.
NZPost prices are ridiculous IMO

When I send clothing or anything that could get wet etc, I put the item in a plastic bag and seal it, then either wrap in brown paper or pop in a postage bag. I always charge either $5 or $7 for postage depending on the size and weight, and I don't usually mind if I charge $5 and it ends up costing a bit more to post.
If its something bulky or breakable etc, I wrap in bubble wrap or newspaper etc and post in a postage box, or my own box wrapped in brown paper.

i sell heaps of clothing and just put it in 2 shopping bags....the smaller you can wrap the better cause they measure everything...........if i dont have shopping bags you can get a prepaid standard post one for $4 that fits a few things in even though its small. i dont use brown paper with tmine as i try and keep post down but if you dont charge for it...........

If it's small baby clothing, single items you can often get away with posting it in an A4 envelope for 90c.

Thanks for the great ideas ladies!
I would like to be able to send as cheap as possible, as I would hate to be accused of overcharging
Though I find it really difficult to put a charge on postage when listing the item.
I thought of packaging the clothes up, taking them to get weighed and finding cost and then letting buyer know? Or is that the complicated way?
Gee it's a lot easier to be the buyer, isn't it?!!

i list the items and while auction is running if someone is interested then they will ask how much post is....otherwise i get options for them at the end of auction.........as i dont have the time to run in b4 hand to do it.....never had a complaint yet....and im getting quite good at getting the price off the NZPost site

I work out the price off the NZpost site (see postage centre at bottom of TM page). I charge 50c for the packaging (just brown paper or an A4 envelope) in a plastic bag, the postage on top of that.
Most single item things, like adults clothes etc will be about $4 postage nationwide. Bulk lots you should work out dimensionally and weigh at home (always overestimate). Like others said, for a single item of clothing for a wee one you can put in an a4 envelope and its just $1 postage.

I have just stuck mine on with a slightly higer buy now that I expect and give free postage with buy now - that way I dont have to worry about it as much.

I sold a large mans hoodie the other week and charged $10 for postage thinking that would be plenty and it cost me $10.50! NZpost are such a rip off! Courier companies can be heaps cheaper if you send lots of items and buy courier tickets by the book
