 Topic: To neuter or not!?

So for the first time i have a male cat. The kids got him for Christmas and called him Azrak. He is a lovely big cat...
Anyway i dont know if i should get him fixed... Will it change him?
Whats the pros and cons or is it a no brainer and i should just do it...?
Any thoughts appreciated please.

It will change his personality, he would probally be a lot more docile.
But if you don't there is a huge chance he will spray all over the house to mark his territory

YES.....Toms are gross once they start spraying so get it done ASAP
Plus you won't be adding to the unwanted kitten population.

I have fairly strong opinions on this so hope that doesn't come across as preachy!! I think every cat should be neutered/speyed. There are so many unwanted kittens out there (just visit your local SPCA in the kitten season!), and even if owners find homes for their cat's litter, that decreases the number of potential owners who will go to the SPCA. I especially disagree with letting female cats have a litter before getting them speyed, as there is no need... but that wasn't your question!
We have a beautiful (5.5kg!!) male cat who we got when he was 3 years old from the SPCA. He is neutered and has a lovely nature - very cuddly, never sprays... he can be a bit of a neighbourhood bully, but I think he'd be that way regardless. Neutering your kitty will mellow him a bit and stop him wandering the neighbourhood looking for potential mates, getting into scraps and feeling the need to spray to mark his territory, so I think it's a no brainer. It is a no brainer, just do it, otherwise there will be kittens galore. There are so many kittens that get put down every week in this country  I have neutered three male cats and none of them changed at all in personality.

cool... i had forgot about the spraying thing...
i have two cats - one was a stray from the kindy. i got her as a not quite weaned kitten at the beginning of the first term and the two cats are very funny together.. they sleep together and play well but i was worried what would happen when the girl got to "that" age!
amybaby not preachy, much appreciated... oh and good luck with the labour! may 10 would have been a good day for a baby but being late is fine too... just ask my three LOL!

If hes an inside cat it is up to you. (I would do it just to stop the spraying and if he becomes more docile then it is all good) If he is an outside cat then I think the responsible thing is to get him done. Not only for the excess kitten population but Feline AIDS is big in NZ. He can contract it not just from sex but fighting and that will dramatically shorten his life. If he is the kids cat then a longer life is probably better. Neutered males are normally less prone to fighting so you win on both the ways they can contract it by neutering.

Yep, I agree it is a no brainer really. Tom cats are gross and there are enough unwanted kittens out there as it is!

My cat is nuetered and he is a lovely cat, most people who meet him remember him and ask after him coz he is such an affectionate cat. Maybe he was just a cute cat to start with tho haha!

My first cat was a vicious little bastard until he was neutered. Now he's the biggest wet blanket you'll ever meet. It's like he doesn't know how to use his claws. You can do anything to that cat and the most you'll get is a growl, maybe a hiss and he'll pretend to bite you. It's adorable, he'll put his mouth over you and breathe really heavily. What a threat 
Second cat is female, so not relevant. Third cat is male, also a mean little thing. A few times he really seriously hurt my older male, then we got him fixed and he's bearable now. TBH most of the time I don't like him, but he's not a bad cat anymore.

No brainer really, unless you plan to breed then going for the chop is the only option - its a far easier op getting neutered than female spaying.

He'll spray if you don't and possibly pick fights with other 'tom' cats in the neighbourhood.
I agree with Amybaby there are so many unwanted kittens as a result of not. Your cat might be the male but the owner of the female might not want the kittens.
My female cat came from the SPCA as a 5 week old kitten that had been dumped in the Hutt River in a plastic rubbish bag in a cardboard box. She was the only kitten to survive
I have 6 cats though, 3 females and 3 males and all are speyed/neutered. All brothers and sisters bar the one above. I have a lot of friends who don't get it done and they're lucky my gran and I love cats!

I agree with what others have said above. Unless you are planning to breed, I would get the male chopped, and if the female hasnt been already, you should get her done as well. Just so you dont get a litter of suprise kittens.
I think that 6 months is the reccommended age to have it done, for both male and female cats.

the one and only male cat that we left it too late to fix ran away - he was such a cool cat as well - so if you want to keep him and not stink out your whole house and property I would say definately fix him.
