My gorgeous baby has turned into a screaming machine! He is our third and was a breeze for the first four months of life. I assumed that we had missed out on the colic and reflux thing that we experienced with the first two. He was a bit clingy and crying around teething time but still a sunny little chap.

He is one at the end of this week. Over the past 4-5 weeks he has started to make that horrible gulpy sound that reflux babies make. He screams when i put him into bed and wakes during the night with a murderous scream. He clings to me all day and i cant take a step without him crying out and he wants to climb and scratch at me for large periods of the day. I already have a high maintenace two year old and not sure where to from here? Has anyone heard of a child developing reflux like this? I know babies grow out of reflux but have never heard of a baby growing into it!

Thanks

Not sure about this, but funnily enough I wonder if my 19 month old is doing something similar. He had mild reflux from about 4 months til about a year old, that we treated with Rhuger tincture (wonderful stuff!). For the last month or so though, he seems to be making that classic reflux sound after a midday or evening breastfeed (I can hear liquid coming back up). Doesn't seem to be bothering him, only a couple of times he has screwed up his face (must taste awful!).

You should post this in the Reflux and Allergy section, there are some very knowledgable mums that visit that area.

Could it be that he had very mild reflux as a baby, but some kind of food allergy/intolerance is aggravating it? For example, lactose intolerance is something I think gets worse over time? Or wheat? But sorry, I'm no expert - like whitewave said, try the allergy section.

Even now my daughter (26 mths) makes refluxy noises if she has a food she doesn't tolerate well ... and her food intolerances have been getting worse since she was about 18 months or so.

Thanks girls, i appreciate the feedback and yes will try the other suggested section!

God help us if it food intolerances as i have a gp huband who until we had children never believed in colic or reflux, it is me (and the kids) who have been punished for his intolerance! Who knows what he will think of food issues! Oh well,we are making him into a more knowledgable understanding family dr!

My daughter had reflux as a baby and stopped taking her medication at just under 1. She goes through periods of time where the reflux seems to be back and the doctor said sometimes it can be related to a growth spurt - their digestive systems are still immature and can take a while to catch up if they have grown rapidly in a short period of time. Not much help but something to consider maybe?

Thanks Lilypie, that is a thought as he has a huge appetite lately and is really long and lean.

Also off to google rhuger tincture! Thanks again girls.
