I just posted another question about expressing and it seems that is falling to pieces so what are my options regarding formula?
What have you found best?
Has anyone tried organic formula?
How do I get samples?

It's really just a matter of trial and error to see what works for Tom. Usually if you ring up formula companies (find their numbers on their websites) they'll send you out samples, but not always.
I tried Alex on Nurture Gold and Karicare Gold but found he got too constipated on them, and in the end it was just plain old Karicare Starter that worked. He was also on Karicare AR for a while, which really helped his reflux.
Now that he's on a follow-on formula I've shifted him over to S-26 Gold Progress, for the simple reason that it's the easiest one to get where I live! It also comes in those little ready-to-pour boxes which is really handy for out and about. Obviously I wouldn't have kept him on it if it disagreed with his system but so far it seems fine.

My experiences with formulas thus far:
Karicare - caused extreme wind probs
Nurutre (gold and the non-gold one) - no wind probs but made Daniel very constipated
S26 - So far so good, hes on his 3rd tin with no probs, every now and then (maybe once every few days) he spills whereas he never use to but hes very happy on it.
Samples:
From their websites. But you can get sachets from the supermarket for a couple of dollars.

I agree with Stacey on the Nuture - we tried both as well and Elle had bad constipation, we use the standard Karicare and have no probs with it, but it all depends on the individual baby.
I also agree with trying the samples 1st, Karicare (normal and gold) and Nuture are both available at the supermarket in the sachets

Arrrghhh!!!! So confusing. Can you tell I really dont want to go down this line? Part of it is laziness, part is the feeling that "I" should be able to provide for my baby and if I didnt need to express I would be able to, part of me still has the mental image of me destroying my babies intestines by using the devils spawn formula!!! Man antenatal information leaves a lot to be desired doesnt it

Don't worry nzpiper, I had the same issues when I switched over to formula. I felt guilty for ages that I couldn't produce what my baby needed (which, at the time, was AR formula - my stupid boobs just wouldn't thicken the breastmilk no matter how much I tried to tell them to!  )
But at the end of the day, breast isn't best for every baby. If feeding Tom formula is going to make life easier and happier for him and you then it's the best thing. I've seen a few people refuse to try formula when it was obvious that breastfeeding just wasn't working for them, and with hindsight all of those people have said that they wished they'd made the switch rather than spending a whole year dreading every feed.

Nzpiper - I felt all of that too before switching to Formula, but in the end you'll make the right decision on what is right for you and Thomas.

Why is it Devils Spawn? I take exception to that, I had no choice BUT to give Cooper formula, if I hadn't he wouldn't have gained the weight that he so desparately needed to. Yeah it's a pain in the arse having to wash bottles, and sterilise and make them up every night. It's not my fault that my body let me down this time.
Anyway sorry for that vent, but I'm getting a little sick and tired of the negativity around formula feeding.
We use Heinz Nuture Gold. No problems with it at all.

I know just how ytou feel! We swapped Roh to formula as just 6 weeks and I felt as guilty as hell!
Thing is - he's fine. the picture of health! He got all his nutrients from me and formula is really fine for babies.
If he doesn't have any issues then just pick one that's on special and try it. Ro has Nuture Gold and has had no issues - poos three times a day in fact!
Know what you mean about gettinga straight answer though - drives you mad!

Breast feeding is working brilliantly for us, its just that I am going back to work one day a week and thought that maybe I could express fo those days like I used to but nup! It wasnt to be so now I need alternatives so my wee boy doesnt starve when mummy isnt here. As I work a 50 min drive from home it wouldnt work to bring him in for feeds.
Bah!!!!!!! (stomping feet in a small tanty)

I think what nzpiper meant (and certainly what I meant) is that there is so much pressure out there to breastfeed that even when logically you know that formula is going to be the best for your child, you still feel guilty about it.
For example, even at my antenatal classes (run by Parents Centre) the instructor refused to give us any information at all about formula feeding because it 'wasn't what she believed in'. The first time I bottled-fed Alex in public I had two older ladies walk past me talking loudly about how terrible it was to see so many people bottle-feeding these days and how lazy it was of those mothers. That sort of attitude does creep in to your subconscious after a while and it takes a real effort to ignore it.
So I can understand why people are reluctant to switch to formula, even though I'm totally pro-formula now (for those who need it). It has made a massive difference to the health and happiness of my baby.
Does that make any sense? It's a bit of a ramble

I didn't really want to stop breastfeeding but because of the reflux (didn't know about it at the time) and me being tired, I was stressing which was having a knock on effect with my milk. When we switched it was like a different baby. Because of the reflux, we have her on Karicare AR, but like everyone says, try the sample sachets and see how you get on!
As for feeling guilty, you will for a while but it soon goes when you see how content they are. Trust yourself to know you are doing the right thing! Regardless of whether you breast or bottle feed!

Mel, Mikaela is right. I wasnt saying that I thought it was the devils spawn...just that you get so brainwashed that its is bad (stories of guts bleeding etc) that the scaremongering gets to you. anyone would think we were tipping arsenic down our kids throats.
I would be the first to tell someone else not to feel guilty and that even if breast is best, formula is a damn good second. I guess my prob is that I can feed so I should feed for all those who cant.

You haven't offended me at all. I'm just a little touchy about the issue, because on another forum me and a couple of other mums got slammed for being FF mum's. It didn't matter what we said we were wrong.
I agree there's not enough info out there, and the info that is out there is very limited and/or the health prof's aren't allowed to tell us them. That's something that the MOH needs to address and the sooner they do that the better.
FF wasn't the ideal choice for me, it was a matter of having to do it. It was heartbreaking, especially since I'd fed Nyah & Conor so well, and I stupidly thought that I'd be able to feed #3 no sweat. When in fact it was a completely different scenario.
The only reason I chose the formula that I did for Cooper was because the other two had it after I stopped feeding them (9mths & 19mths), and I knew that Karicare hadn't agreed with either of them, and Heinz was actually cheaper 4yrs ago.
So it's all good, I'm sorry that I went off like I did, as I said just a little sensitive about something that I had no control over.

I just posted in your other thread When Kryssi was 8 1/2 mos I went back to work so I did FF during working hours and BF for the rest of it. I kept up FF during what would ordinarily be my working hours, on the weekend, so I wouldn't boost my milk and hurt ROFL! When do you go back to work?

I am going back for a day on the 2nd and then it could be every saturday or maybe not. It could be intermittent. I have 300ml frozen at the moment but that milk is 2 months old so may not suit a 5 month old much. My mum is babysitting on Saturday night so he will possibly need some of that then.

I would really recommend the S26 Gold. We have just had to put Samantha on Formula a few weeks ago after she decided she would no longer take a booby
I have heard from several sources now that the S26 gold is the closest you can get to breast milk and I have to say that Sam has had no problems with it at all. No wind, spilling or tummy aches. I am very impressed!
You can buy the stick packs of 4 for around $5 to try out so you don't waste money on a whole tin.
Oh, and as an extra bonus the S26 is one of the cheaper formula's on the market
