Topic: Temping Question or 2 or 3....... Posted: 19 July 2008 at 2:36pm |
I am just about to start temping for the second time. The first time round was easy temping as did it as soon as my alarm went off in the morning for work...
Thsi time around my "alarm" is all over the show. DS wakes anytime between 2 -4 am and then wakes for the day between 6.30 and 7am.
Right my questions:
When should I temp? Just when I wake or before I get up to him at the earlier time.
How much wil it effect my charting if I haven't got the same amount of sleep time between getting up the 1st time then temping when wakes for the day.
Any other advice appreciated!

you really need to temp at the same time every morning, and always after 3 hours sleep. i think you would be best setting an alarm for 630, if you have an electronic thermometer it will store the temp and you can just record it when you get up for the day.

Yeah, I know thats what you are suppose to do so thats where it gets confusing as sometimes I am up from 4-4.30 and then only get 2 hours sleep if I set my alarm for 6.30am so its really needing to sort out which one is worse
Temping at different times eg between 2-4am
or
Temping at 6.30 after less than 2 hours sleep.
It was so much easier temping the first time with no child as could sleep through the night and just temp at 6.30am when my alarm went off

i'd say go woth 630 even if you havent quite had enough sleep (make a note of those days) at least it will always be at the same time as apposed to anything between 2-4am

Where as I say the opposite and temp after 3 consecutive hours of sleep i.e between 2-4am. I work shift work so temp at different times of the day and it still works for me.

Found this on Fertility Friend:
Is it more important to take my temperature at the same time every day or after at least three hours of sleep?
Ideally, you will be able to take your temperature at both the same time and after at least three hours of sleep, but sometimes this is not possible. Do your best to meet the ideal as closely as possible. Whether or not you will have a more accurate temperature after sleeping the longest or at your usual wake-up time varies depending on your own unique metabolism. You will only really know after you have charted for several cycles and have experimented a little bit.

and this:
How can I take my temperature when I have to get up in the middle of the night almost every night?
If you have to get up in the night and it is unavoidable, like having to take care of a small child, or if you have to go to the bathroom, just do the best you can. While some women notice rocky temperatures when they wake during the night, some women notice little impact. Take your temperature as close as you can to the same time each morning and choose a time that is likely to be when you have had the most sleep. For example, if your toddler wakes up every morning at 6 am, then take your temperature at that time, even if you go back to sleep. Try to avoid taking your temperature in the middle of the night, though, even if you seem to always get up at the same time in the middle of the night. Temperatures taken in the morning show a clearer biphasic curve and the time is more predictable.

Hmmm, well may try temping at 6.30am this cycle and see what happens and then try taking it between 2-4am next cycle and see what is best.
Thanks for all that, Mrs B!

What if for a few days you take it at both times and see how different they are? Sometimes I find it's not all that different.

Your a thinker, Chelle! That would make more sense really
Did it this morning anyway so will try both ways tomorrow and see what the go is.
Emz, there is no way I am setting my alarm for 5am! My DH would kill me and I am way to lazy to even attempt to function at that time

Hehe you don't need to function - I don't even turn the light on lol. I use the light on my cellphone. Fell asleep this morning while temping and woke up 20 mins later

Sunshine everyones temps vary but around the fertile time it should be a low temp. If you go to the charting thread you will see some charts to give you an idea. Your temps are high after Ovulation

Yes, you need a Basal (Ovulation) Thermometer (BBT) and if you can get one that goes to 2 decimal places it has greater accuracy. You can get them from most pharmacies or online, i.e. trademe.

What kind of thermometer is easier to use and more accurate? Digital or a mercury one?
I have a mercury one and have just started temping and I'm just not sure I'm doing it right... the temps are all over the show...

I've got a digital one and find it really nice and simple to use. It beeps when it's ready too and saves the temperature so if I'm not ready to turn the light on and check I can just turn it off and check later.

I dont know about mercury as I dont have one or researched them. I have a digital one and like Chelle its really simple to use and beeps when its ready to be read. Mine also has a memory so I can check later as well.
