Topic: Will I need a new pram? Posted: 08 December 2008 at 7:28pm |
I'm trying to work out if I need to start saving up for a new pram or not and I was wondering what you guys think..
Daniel will be 2y 2m approx when #2 shows (if everything goes smoothly this time).
My current pram doesn't have the option of attaching a toddler seat... I didn't even think about this at the time when I got it which was a bit silly really. Will I need something like a phil n teds/MB or is it not worth it?
I've thought about the sling thing and Daniel keeping his pram but I have back issues and no doubt will get worse over the coming months so I don't think carrying a newborn around would be all that smart.. so that option is out.
I don't know how much a 2+ yr old goes in a pram. But if I need a new pram I'm going to have to start putting a bit of $ away for it now and think about selling my other one in a few months.

It probably depends how much walking you do. I walk a lot and for long periods with my dogs so even at 2 or older Spencer wouldn't be able to walk for that long and would need to go in the buggy at some point. For that reason we have bought a double MB. I did think about doing the sling thing and then having Spencer walk, which might be ok for trips to malls etc but it's not gonna work when were at the forest for an hour +.
I intend to get a double umbrella stroller later on too and that way if Spencer wants to sit down he can and it means I don't have to take a huge buggy to the mall, cafe's etc and if he doesn't want to sit in it then my nappy bag can ride on one side. Until the newbie is old enough for a stroller i'm gonna use the sling for malls cos I hate trying to get a single buggy around most stores so don't even want to attempt it with a double one.
Not sure if this is true but one of the shop assistance reckoned that when the younger one is in a pram the older one often also wants to be in the pram as well.

Cos I know you will be out walking as soon as you can I would say def get one that is like a one child pram and has that bit at the back that another child can go in.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I ended up buying another pram when I was pregnant with Maddi (I now have 5).
It has been pretty handy for taking the girls on walks. I dont have my license so we do quite a bit of walking. Keira still goes in the Pram a lot now as shes not exactly the fastest walker and tires pretty easily.
For the Mall I have only ever used my stroller and either had Maddi in the front pack and Keira in the stroller or Maddi in the stroller and Keira walking.

It's hard to know, by 2yo Michaela was refusing to go into her pram (oh the tanties we had ) so it's been in the garage ever since, I bought her a backpack to carry her own nappies etc and she walks everywhere so although I'm buying a new pram I'll be getting a single with a kiddiboard for when I am in a hurry (although she tends to run everywhere anyway).
What about saving the money and seeing how he is closer to the time? That way if you need a new pram you'll be able to afford it and if not you'll have extra cash to spend on other things that crop up.

we ended up getting a new pram that had a toddler seat (and selling our single MB - stupidest thing I ever did!! ) Leah flattly refused to go in the toddler seat when the time came so have had to sell that and got a double MB off TM.
Leah was 22 months when Joel was born and LOVES he side by side stroller, if its up on the deck she plays in it or keeps asking to go for walks. Best money spent, and its not generally too wide for doorways either.

I got a buggy board for Ella when Benjy arrived. (She was 2 years 2 months)
It was really handy to have for longer trips when she got tired but I only used it for a really short time before she was happy to walk everywhere.

That's a good point Becks. I will be getting out walking as soon as. I'm not sure about a phil n teds though.. I'm not fussed about one child being in front of the other but I don't like how close the child at the bottom can get their fingers in the wheels. I'm leaning towards a MB. There are 2 others in my street I've seen walking down the walking tracks with double MBs. There seems to be quite a few on TM too for cheaper than a phil n teds so I might just put away enough for one of those.

We looked after my friends toddler on Saturday so test drove the double MB and it's really awesome, I don't think you would be disappointed if you bought one. DH did most of the driving and he loved, and he normally moans about everything....lol
The two boys loved being in it as well cos they could have their own little interaction going on. They even stayed in it to eat lunch which I was very surprised about.

lol DH loves our current pram. If I can get the MB 2nd hand down the track I may just keep the one I have now as well.

I have twins and found my biggest problem was finding a double pram for under $800. I finally got a brand new steelcraft enigma twin stroller for around $400. Last time I checked they still have them at Farmers. The only problem with double strollers is sometimes they have trouble fitting through doors in stores.
Have you tried trademe?

Well the one we got brand new for $400 at Farmers has been fantastic! And is definitly the cheapest we found brand new :) You should check it out. It's got the proper tires too not those horrible plastic ones. I usually walk with it for 2 hours 4 days a week. Great value for money. Plus brand new you get a warranty In fact it might even go down in price with boxing day sales. I think thats when we got ours last year.

Save up for it, but don't buy until after baby arrives. Going on lots of walks is definitely going to be a decider for you for there are other things as well: Briona had silent reflux and did not like the stroller at all - she just about lived in the front pack while Hannah rode in the stroller. I think it's good to have a stroller option for any child under 3yrs, from my experience with how much they seem to be able to walk or not at 2 or 3 yrs. And of course it will depend on whether Daniel prefers to walk with you with a wrist strap or actually ride. You might even want to have him on some kind of ride-on with an adult handle, and baby in a sling, and just buy a cheap umbrella stroller for when you are up town (e.g. the library).

Sling and frontpack won't be an option. My back isn't great so I won't be putting added strain on it by carrying bubs around in either of those.
Daniel had silent reflux too and we found the best place for him was in the pram slightly raised up.
I will be getting a new pram I've deicded. I'll be walking to burn off fat and there is no way Daniel will keep up with the pace for 6km approx lol and some of the terrian won't be good for one of those kiddy board things. An umbrella stroller also wouldn't be good for that kind of thing. And I'll just sell it off once it's no longer required.

We got our double MB in one of the farmers sales for $300 less than normal. Only draw back was we had to the green one but who cares really, for $300 dollars off I couldn't give a rats what colour it was. I would keep an eye out for another sale like that to come up, with the economy how it is the shops are in sales fever so won't be long till you can pick up a real good bargain.
And yep we bought a decent one for that exact reason too, long walks over rough terrain you just need a decent buggy otherwise you are only gonna cause yourself a whole load of grief.

Hey Stacey my SIL has 9 week old twins and she bought this buggy as she couldn't justify neary $1k on a MB or P&T.
SIL got this buggy Here
She got the package including storm cover and bassinett type sleeping cocoon's too.
Anyway, just an idea for you!

Thanks peachy! I can see DH looking at that and saying no just because of the look of the wheels lol *rolls eyes*
That's true Marissa. I got my buggy for half price in a sale so I'll just keep an eye out and MIL was quite cranky last time we bought a pram because she wanted to help with that so maybe she might want to help again.
