Topic: First colds & anxious mum :) Posted: 28 December 2008 at 11:13am |
Hi everyone! My litlle girl seems to have a cold which I know isn't a big deal but shes still so young! Is there any need for concern due to her age? Her nose is very blocked and it sounds like it is quite hard for her to breathe at times. I just got her up after her sleep and she had crusty green snot that had run all down her face. I'm mainly just worried due to it affecting her breathing. Thanks for your thoughts...

Hi, just keep an eye on her temp. As long as she is still drinking and has wet nappies she should be fine. For the nose you can get some stuff called fess little noses, it's a saline solution you can squirt up there to loosen the mucous and help them breathe. Hopefully you have a pharmacy open near you, or the supermarket might carry some.
If you do get worried though give healthline a ring and they can let you know whether or not you need to see a doc.
Hope she gets over her cold quickly

Aww, your poor wee girl. To have a cold that little
When Sam was a wee baby and was sick we would lift the head end of the cot onto phone books to give it a slight lean and put drops of cooled boiled water up her nose. It would usually make her sneeze which would clear out the gunk. Nasal aspirators are really useful too I found.
Hope she is better soon

Running a hot shower in the bathroom and closing the door and standing in the room with her for a while might help too. If you are breastfeeding then a few drops of breastmilk in her nose will help to clear it. My little girl had a cold when she was that little. It's so hard to deal with such a little one being sick. Hope she gets better soon.

Hope the nasal aspirator and saline drops help! Apart from that, we just raised the end of Chloe's cot, and used Karvol drops on a cloth near her head, and Vicks on her feet (advised by Dr). Also steam helps them breathe a bit easier if they are really congested, so if her breathing gets quite bad you could take her into a steamy bathroom.
If you are worried or she really starts struggling to breathe, call Healthline or take her to the Dr.
Hope she gets better soon!

Raising the cot head and karvol on a cloth in the cot always helps us.

Awww, your poor wee poppet!! The first cold is always tough on first time mums
Like the others have suggested if she still has wet nappies and is drinking fine then she'll be okay but Karvol (which is like Vicks but in capsule forum) on a cloth or nappy and the head of the cot or basinette raised slightly to help her breathe a little better.
Also the Saline drops up the nose and those little snot sucker thingies you can get from a Pharmacy work wonders...
Good luck to you.

Yep the shower thing is probably the best thing for her age. The only thing you want to be careful of is that it doesn't settle into her lungs/ears (bronchilitis/ear infection) - but well before that you have issues with feeding because she can't breathe. So just try to keep her as uncongested as possible. If you're unsure as to how she is doing, GP visits are free for under 5's.

Definately raising the cot thing. Another suggestion which worked well for me was to get some Baby Balsam (Vicks for babies) and put some on a tissue and put it between the layers of clothes on their chests. It protects their skin but helps clear their noses. My boys have all suffered colds at a very early age and it is quite traumatic for mum. Helpline were fantastic but found that they were slightly overly cautious and encouraged me to seek medical advice from a doc. Doctors on the otherhand sometimes can be a little harsh and uncaring but the odd one can be understanding so if you are really worried - dont be reluctant to get a second opinion. Also use your midwife too - she will be able to give some good advice.
