Morning All
Just wondering is taking a multi vitamin or a prenatal vitamin before you get pregnant enough for your body. Or can you just have folic acid alone to help
Because some people take folic acid with a prenatal vitamin or a multi vitamin but wouldnt the prenatal vitamin or the multi vitamin have enough folic acid in it already
And the other vitamins in the pills cant you get that from food
It would depend on your diet, but if you eat well then you should get most of your vit needs from food - and that includes folic acid in my opinion. but I eat organic/homegrown so feel I get all I need from my food.
In the past I would have said it would be diet dependant but now I think that folic acid is essential. I'm on 5mg of folic acid on the off chance I get preggers to hopefully prevent another fetal abnormality. We aren't trying and don't want to get preggers again but DH just need to look at me and I get pregnant. That was recommended to me by my ob, mw and gp.
It is recommended that you take folic acid pre-preg however it isn't crucial to take any other type of multi vitamin as long as you are getting the right nutrients out of your diet. If you don't eat well (ie you eat lots of crap!) then it would be best to take a multi vitamin as well, but that goes for anyone, regardless of whether you are trying to get preg or not.
I think the vits are optional but the folic acid is a must.
And no multi vits dont have anough folic acid so you will need extra folic acid ontop of that. Im taking a really really good multi vit but im also taking 2 folic pills a day
Best to talk to your doctor. If you or they are concerned they can do blood tests and see if you are lacking in any vitamins that baby would benefit from you taking.
