Topic: Im getting desperate! Posted: 11 March 2010 at 8:02am |
Its been over two weeks now and Kylah is still getting up during the night, for hours on end!
She sometimes wakes up happy, but mostly she is crying. She asks to hop in our bed but cries there too, wont go back to bed, and just wants to be in the living room to watch tv, which i refuse to let her do.
I have been up since 4am, the night before didnt get to bed until half one, and the night before that was up from 2am-4am.
I am really about to keel over i am so tired. Any ideas would really be appreciated!

You must have tried all the normal ideas, so how about shutting the door to her bedroom and letting her cry.
If she opens the door or whatever , dont talk to her, dont interact with her, just put her back into bed and close the door.
Sounds mean and extreme, but sounds like you havent much choice
Hugs hun

Yup i have tried that, she just comes back out over and over and over and over. Until the point she gets really hysterical and i cannot bear to do it any longer.

I don't have much experience in this but do you know why she's waking? Especially if she's waking up upset. If you can work out why it might be easier to find a solution to keep her in her own bed.
Oh and does she have a night light?

Been there done that. I got tough & put up with crying, screaming etc for a couple of weeks but it did work. I put DS back to bed with no talking, I took away things like bedtime stories, fav toys & he soon learned, & it was really tough on me but it worked & I wish I had done it earlier.

oh fair call, understand that. How about phenergan? Friend of mine had similar issues and the doc said phenergan to break the cycle - not sure how you feel about things like that but might be worth seeing what a doc says?

My Dr suggested that also, but I don't think drugging them is the answer they need to learn to go to sleep & get back to sleep themselves. Think she maybe in a habbit if she is waking up around the same time, maybe crying cause she is tired & needs sleep, or knows she will get the attention she wants.
Another thing I tried & it worked great with my kids for sleep, toilet training, eating veg is the good old reward chart.
At the moment I am doing time charts, when the do something like tidy up, make beds, eat veges etc, they get 10mins, if they misbehave they get 10mins off, & the good thing is they will try & earn back there lost time so will do extra things & get really excited when the earn them.

Worth a try of course
(hope that does work so young , mine is almost 2!)

No I don't think 2yrs is too young, (although it can be harder) but with saying that with DS1 I was not tough in the beginning & paid the price. Some night I slept on the couch so he could watch tv as I could not handle it, but I did learned pretty quickly.
My kids range from 3-9yr so plenty of years of sleep deprivation, lol.
I remember the best advise I got with DS1 when he was a baby was to put him to bed awake, hard thing to do with a new baby & being a new mum, but it turned out to be a life saver.
By the time DS3 was at the stage to start it up I shut it down quick & he has been a breeze.
I know it is hard & I hated being a tough parent but sometimes for you sanity you need to be. I am learning everyday how to achieve the balance needed & am totally in to bribing all though I call it rewards, lol.

I had to get rid of the night light as DS thought it was play time. My SIL made her DD a fairy room, oh so cute & had glow in the dark fairy stickers. I had space glow in the dark stick things, I think something they can see on the wall is great cause if they wake up in the dark they may not remember where they are sometimes.

Ok so i went out and bought a night light.. and it doesnt go
You know what, i forgot the stickers!! Grrr, its raining, and i am tired and grumpy!
Jazzy, I put her down awake from when she was 6 weeks old. We have always had a perfect routine and never had any sleep problems. She has been a routine girl her whole life, dinner at 5, bath at 6, bed at 7. Since dropping the day sleep it has changed to dinner at 5, bed at 6.30.

yeah my kids have a pretty strict routine other wise I don't think I could juggle everything. Has things changed because she has drooped her afternoon sleep? If it was resent that maybe why she wakes up as she was used to 2 sleeps...don't know am just over thinking, lol

Yeah i dropped her day sleep a couple days before she started doing this, because when she had a day sleep she wouldn't go to bed until 10pm!
She has had a sleep 2 days this week during the day for an hour, and it has not changed what she does at night.

lol, I know where you are coming from, DS2 was 10mths when I found out I was 6wks pg & I had to get up & down for both of them during the night, did my head in sometimes. I swear by routines but can not always stick to them but life is much easier when I can

I noticed a change with DS1 when he dropped a sleep & it was harder when he did have a nap in the afternoon as it would be late nights again. I find for myself if I get into a habit like waking up at night at a certain time or doing toilet breaks if I do something different before bed time & it sometimes changes that.
